View Full Version : January 2020: The Madora

Single french braid to nape, then divided into two braids for length, braids wrapped around the crown and pinned in place.

ETA: I found a description from our Madora

My signature style for many years was a combination of center French Dutch braid down the center of my head to the nape, then the remainder of the hair split in two sections, braided and the braids wound around my head (The Madora). Easy to do, long lasting, comfy!

I just did/attempted a very sloppy version of this hairstyle. For some reason the ability to do a single french braid down the back of my head escapes me, though I'm able to do double dutch braided pigtails and crown braids just fine. Other than that, it's a rather simple hairstyle. If I tried to do a somewhat more polished version of this hairstyle, it might look better. Still, for braided hairstyles that wrap around the head, I prefer them to have an underlying french or dutch braid that you can pin the wrapped end to, since that holds more securely compared to pinning to unbraided hair.

This is one of my favorites, aesthetically. I'll have to do it again soon. It's a little more difficult for me now that my braids go more than once around my head though. They're harder to tuck.

I always thought it was just a French braid wrapped around the head, rather than two braids - thought I could be wrong. Anyhow, it's a very lovely style.

According to Madora it is split as demonstrated by Torrin.

I would never have guessed from her avatar picture that it was split, but that does make it a useful style for lengths that are not long enough for a Coronet Braid otherwise. I bet it would be cute as twin braids pinned on either side of the central braid. Tuck the ends behind the central braid or wrap them into decorative pin curls. Those folks who say their hair isn’t long enough need to try this!

Amaryllis, can't see it but i am sure it is lovely. I love this style. I first came across it, when talking with its creator Madora and it was an honour to get her to see it and compliment me on it.
On another note, it just does not hold for me at all. It was in place for 5 minutes for the picture.
Anyway, here's my only attempt 3 years ago:

That's beautiful, Ligeia!

Mine has held up all day but it is getting frizzy, especially on my neck where my coat has been rubbing. Still, styles like this one, crown braids, and milkmaid braids are the most comfortable way to wear my hair.

All of the ones done so far are lovely.

I did a version of this on a family members hair. Their braids weren't long enough to wrap all the way around. They stopped at the top of the head so I pinned the ends into tufts.

I will try this on my own hair post wash day sometime, and post pictures of both then.

Oh, I've done this. Both with one french braid, and also two french braids. I didn't know it had a name... I always just considered it "Heidi braids with my hair in french braid(s)"!

The French braid helps contain the wispy bits that like to pull out of my hair.

I don't think I have any pictures, though. I don't do it unless I have a lot of time (the extra time it takes for the French part; I can do Heidi braids pretty quickly).

Pardon the less-than-lovely photo angles. I haven't French-braided my hair in ages--I had forgotten how much length it eats up! Takes a lot of pins to hold the braids up, but they've been stable. Pretty comfy style.

Yaaay! I love this one, and try to do it at least once a month. I have very thin ends, so by the time the braids are over my face they're more like accent braids or headbands, and the tips are also very red from sun damage. It looks like a totally different style :p. I'll try to get a picture!

Siv
January 4th, 2020, 06:28 AM
I did a variation awhile ago with just one turn on the french braid before splitting it into two braids... So Heidi braids with no cleavage on the back of the head, sort of. Looked like a faux crown braid to be honest, but the technique was more a Madora.

https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=39665&d=1578144030

It's stayed up for hours already and feels stable. I'm surprised. My braids usually slide back on my head unless I do twin dutch braids. I didn't think one would be enough, since the looped braid only touches the French braid at one point. I wouldn't try to go dancing in it, but for it's fine for sedentary activities and much, much faster.

I don't do this updo very much, french braiding is a pain.
And if I decide to dutch or frenchbraid, I rather go with a braided chinese bun.
Doesn't need extra pins :-)

Do you pin them? I find Heidi braids is very secure (as in, it's my go-to style for competitions of a style of dance that involves constantly jumping up and down), but I do pin them.

My bet is at least TBL. Iíll try one of this days at hip and let you know if it works but I donít like wrapped braid styles unless the braids do at least two loops, maybe it has to do with my hair being super fine, thick braids look great even when wrapped just once though.

Mine's HL+, and it works comfortably for me. The tassles overlap and tuck under past my temples. I'm 5'6" and have a long torso so HL+ is 36" for me. Dunno if that helps you figure something out.
