View Full Version : How did you determine your ultimate length goal?

Hey there!
I've been lurking and posting about the forms for some time, and it seems to me people have definitive goals about how long they hope their hair will grow. I'm so firmly undetermined. I have NO idea. I guess I'm just growing to grow. How did you decide? What were the determining factors? For me waist length seems to be my ultimate goal, but knee length and beyond long hairs never cease to amaze me with their dedication and love for their hair!

I'm just growing to grow, too. :) My plan is to keep growing until I decide to cut it. While I think it would be nice to have a goal, mine is always changing and I guess doesn't really exist. When my hair isn't fun anymore, I'll stop growing. :)

I never actually set any definitive goals beyond the next milestone. It keeps growing and there kept on being another milestone to reach and apparently I've got floor length hair now, which I never set out to have.

I agree with the growing just to grow comments :)
Original goal was just "As long as it'll get by my friend's wedding"
but said friend is now happily expecting so timelines have gone out the window.
I don't think she's decided yet if she still wants a big ceremony, so in my head I'm at least waiting until she decides, but since I've started I feel like I might as well continue no matter what she chooses.
I'm sorta thinking "Longer than I've had it before" is my current goal, which is like BSL, maybe even waist if I get ambitious. I don't think I'd do longer than that.
There are some girls on here with absolutely gorgeous hair that goes longer than that, and I love seeing all of the buns and styles they can do, but I don't think that's me.
I don't want to ever feel like I've gotta wear my hair up everyday, I've always been bad at styling hair, and it's on the thicker side so it gets hot and unmanagable easily. So we'll see how long it gets before I get sick of it lol.

I know I def want at least classic length again :D trying to go for knee for sure this time too and beyond.
I'm doing it because I love long hair and I want to be able to stick with something for once in my life. Last time I caved and bleached..ruined all my progress. Uggh.

My hair has been around hip-BCL for a large portion of my life, and "long" beyond those periods as well. That's exactly where my ends sit at this very moment too due to chops.
For me, it's about two things: wanting it solidly longer than my "default" length as well as the need for constant self-improvement. Once I run out of things to improve with my hair... Yeah, I don't know what happens then. Sure, my thoughts right now are that it would be awesome to have all-virgin, healthy hair right now, but frankly, the journey is the main thing for me. We'll see what happens later. Maybe I'll wreck my hair just for the heck of it.

 It just grew on me.
I'm not too fussed with however long it is, although there are days it feels a little too long now as it heads into the out-of-reach zone.

No specific goal here either. I suspect that much longer than hip length would be in my way. I love the buns people do with longer hair, but I stick to a top knot most days, being at home. Anything at the back of my head is uncomfortable sitting in a recliner or driving in a car. As for how long, I'll find out when I get there. Meanwhile, I'll hold at waist for 2020, growing out layers.

For me, I chose a length that surpassed how long my hair has ever been. I've always grown out until about BSL, and then cut it to a short bob or something. So for once, I would like to see what I look like with long hair. If I didn't have the length goal, I would just let it grow and focus on having good condition hair, which I'm also doing now :)

Hair texture: my hair stops being wurly after BSL and wavy past waist... So I usually prefer a more "average" lenght but to retain more wave.

My goals aren't very set in stone... but I'd like to get it longer than it's ever been, theoretically.
Anything longer than hip seems kind of hard to manage, though the look of classic is very appealing... I'm just not sure I could handle it.
I'd be very happy to get to APL+ again, at the very least. That's the longest my hair's been since I did a big chop at 11.
But I don't really know what I'm going to want until I get there. For all I know I could get back to collarbone and then decide to buzz it all off again!
My only real goal is to have healthy, happy hair. Other than that, I'm just along for the ride.
I like being a part of these forums, and being here makes me want to grow my hair! That's it, really.

I’ve got this unshakeable feeling that when I get to tbl, that will be the shortest length where I won’t feel like there’s any hair missing any more. Which is weird because I’ve never had it longer than mbl before (minus when I had tbl dreads).
But saying that, I always always wanted long hair and ended up cutting because my mum pestered me about my stringy texture and/or a scissor happy hairdresser took it back shorter than I would have liked (I knew no terminology so used to say to the hairdresser to take off all the damage. So they did!).
I hope I’ll not run into any major issues and can let my hair get as long as it likes.

It was quite simple for me - My first goal length was waist but when I got there it didn't "look" long enough, so I grew to the next milestone. The "Not long enough" feeling persisted, as you see by my current length :p Beware of LHC-itis! :rollin:

I'm just going until it feels long enough, or I can no longer manage it.
Considering where I'm at right now (around TBL), I have the sneaking suspicion my original goal of classic isn't going to feel 'long enough'.

My goal was classic. Mostly I picked what I thought was pretty, but I also wanted to go longer than I had before (~TBL) and have that "wow super long" factor, which I feel begins at classic.
Now I'm just sort of going with the flow, if my hair grows longer great, if not then no big deal. I guess I'll stop when I can no longer maintain a hemline that is acceptable to me, or when I decide that additional length isn't making me happy anymore.

I still haven't really decided. My goal length is about an inch shorter than when it becomes an impossible hassle to mostly wear in braids.

This is my current approach. Grow to the next milestone, until/unless the length at that next milestone becomes too much of a hassle in some way or other. Since hair grows pretty gradually, I have enough time to get used to dealing with it becoming gradually longer. Additionally, I'm somewhat curious about how long it's possible to grow my hair.

Love it! :D
I found LHC at around TBL so I just knew I wanted it longer, and to see if longer was possible. Knee was a distant fantasy that would be amazing but no, I never could ... FTL was a 'wow, my hair IS growing!' moment, and Knee went from being a fantasy to 'hmm, maybe it might be possible?' Then once Knee became a real possibility, I could then start look a bit further, and thought well Calf would be really cool! Now I'm there, my next goal is to cut back a few inches and regrow with a better hemline. I might do that for a couple of years, or I might try growing on - ankle and floor are lengths I still doubt I could reach but ankle is now on the horizon of my mind as perhaps a possibility; it's another 6 inches or more (haven't measured yet) and I can tell from my taper that terminal is also somewhere along the way - I don't know where, whether it's before or after floor length. But having reached Calf which was never even a consideration to start with, I'm not too fussed; I am also kind of close to 'long enough' so I may never find out how much further I might be able to grow. The practicality of needing to sit to detangle and sit to shower (and sit for most other things - ambulatory wheelchair user here) means that unclean floors are a consideration at this length already. I used to think my hemline might determine where I stop, but that may not be the case.
tl;dr: I don't think I've really determined my ultimate goal length; perhaps practicality will determine it for me!

Since my goal is just to see how long it can actually get with a blunt hemline, I guess simple curiosity. Whether I'll cut back when it gets there is a question I've not considered.

For me, I started off just wanting longer than I had ever had, which was around waist/hip. I had shaved my head a few years previously and wanted to go in the opposite extreme with hair length. I made my first goal to be classic length, as I felt it was significantly “longer enough” to feel like an achievement.
Once I reached classic and realized that my hair COULD grow longer, I just picked the aesthetic length that I like the most. My next “big goal” is knee length of course, but my final goal is around upper calf. It’s basically the maximum length that I personally want for myself.

I'm just growing to see how long it can grow. I've always wanted my hair pass waist length. It was almost waist length during my childhood. So, it just grew on me to grow it a lot longer. Like, classic or mid-thigh length.

I picked BCL originally because I wanted it long, but still within the realm of "mainstream", though I hadn't really thought harder on what "mainstream" really is. Later I kinda figured out that what I want is a full hemline, and not too much tapering. Which is sort of "mainstream" I guess as in opposite of fairytailing... So I thought I'd have both at BCL, which I probably will, but I'm also quite curious to see how long I can get with little tapering and a full hemline... And I'm also starting to consider fairytailing really beautiful so, the LHC-itis has caught me I guess :D

I picked a length that i thought would be aesthetically pleasing on me, and i also want to grow my hair longer than it's ever been before. The longest my hair has been was around Waist length, and my goal is Tailbone length. Right now after a big chop I'm a little past BSL. I've always LOVED the look of long hair, i was just too impatient to let it grow and went through a long phase where i loved bleaching/coloring my hair

My goal is more about healthy hair than any specific length. I've had "long hair" for most of my life, but it was always a bit ratty looking since I never took care of it. Now that I've joined LHC I want to see if I can maintain healthy ends at a longer length. Since I'm at classic now, fingertip length is just the next step. If/when I get there I'll see how I feel about it.

I used to have a goal of super long. But now I think I want it as long as I can get it and have it "look nice" which is totally up to my personal opinion whenever "it" happens. What looks nice to one person compared to any other is relative. My guess though is somewhere around waist. I have fairly fine hair and do want to wear it down at least once a week. So we shall see. :)

I had classic as a young teen (age 10/11) and that was a nice length for me. So I wanted to get back to that.

I've looked at so many images on google of people with different length hair trying to decide what resonates with me. I've also been affected by Long-Hair-Communityitis which has resulted in bra-strap hair not looking long any more. What I've figured out is that I love waist length hair but I also love classic length. So....we will see.

I want it as long as possible because everything else isn't "long enough", but I also don't want to stand on it.
Oh and really long hair like, ankle looks awesome! I know now, that I will be able to reach at least knee :)

I want to see what is possible for my hair that's why my ultimate goal is terminal. I am tall (5'9") and I have very tight curls, so I want to see how my hair changes at longer lengths which will be a lot of hair. I may change my mind depending on the maintenance of my hair, but I would like at least TBL hair, I think ;)

I just want to have the longest fairy-tale hair that my head can manage, without it beginning to interfere with day-to-day life (things like sitting down!)

For a long time my long term goal was/is classic. Im sooooo close to calling it, but atm only the very tips of the longest strands reach that far. Along the way I broke it up in to smaller goals. When I do call classic ill prob keep going to at least finger tip, then reassess. It feels kinda long, long enough that wearing it down when trying to do anything practical is a pita, but cos I'm pretty petite it's not actually that long 🤣

I never was able to just stick to one goal, haha!
First it was hip, then classic, then knee...

The first time around, I chose classic length because that's the length that I always admired the most. I ended up cutting all the way back to collarbone length which I kept for 2 years. Now I'm growing again and have chosen waist length simply because if I don't have a goal to focus on, I'm likely to walk into a salon spontaneously and getting a style I'll end up regretting. Waist was an easy choice because it's easily determined by cinching a belt around my waist and waiting for my ends to cross it. BSL is more difficult to establish (for me at least).

Hip is long enough to be "unusually long" around here, but not so long that it gets in the way. I'll still be able to wear it down often, too. Any longer and it'd have to be up all the time.

My current goal is waist, and that comes from the fact that I partially believe I can't actually get there so I'd want to over-shoot  I don't think I've ever even been BSL (other than when I was really young maybe!), so I suppose waist is my "super long but potentially could happen if I'm really lucky and careful" hair?
I do think though that I'll probably keep going if I hit waist until I'm not happy with it. The main factors for me would be if I can wear it down often without it being a massive pain, and how thick the hemline is. I would love to get to TBL at least once!

For now, I really want to reach classic and if I do, I really doubt I will cut my hair shorter than that in future. However, I do not plan to stop growing afterwards :) I do want to keep my ends in moderately straight hemline (not necessarily blunt, but not fairytailing either), so we will see how long it gets...

The numeric ultimate goal is just because I think it'd be awesome to say that I have 6 feet of hair. In reality, I want to see how long I can grow it, and if it's less than 6ft, then it's less than 6ft.

I'm not sure yet about my ultimate goal, part of me wants to grow to terminal length but I'll have to see when it stops being fun. So for now I put my eyes on classic to ftl, which would already be extraordinary for me as I never had my hair longer than bsl/mbl. It will be fantastic to reach that! And then anything longer is just a bonus. I'd love to have it longer but it has to continue to be fun. I'm not sure if I'll like the feel of my hair as it's quite thick and heavy but I guess you get used to the feeling along the way! Everything is possible for now and I'll probably get LHC itis as well ;)

My ultimate goal is fingertip length when stretched. It’s been my goal for most of the last 8 years since I joined here. FTL stretched is probably classic when curly, so I have classic listed as my goal.
The reason behind fingertip being my goal is that I’ve been told that it is harder to deal with once past FTL. Otherwise I would have considered knee length. I wear my hair up all the time, so I want length to wear a variety of different buns. I get bored of the same style every day.

The brief "story" of my desire to have butt-length hair comes from my neighbor across the street – we were, like, 8 and 6 years old. She is the younger one. She had butt-length hair and I always thought it was so pretty! Frankly, I was jealous! My hair never grew past my shoulders. I don't think she ever got trims. I was forced regular trims (my grandma said it would "make my hair grow faster").
So, really, from that point on, when I was about eight years old, I have wished to have butt-length hair. I am almost 30 years old and 5'7½". My hair is just past my bra length. I am deficient in iron, which seems to affect the growth rate of my hair.
Hopefully I will at least make it to be an old woman with long, white hair, if it takes that long. I would love to be old with long, white hair (if it's gray, I might dye it white, haha).

It has always been a goal for me to get it as long as I possibly can, but now I have set the goal of classic length. I may grow it a bit longer after that and then cut it back to classic so I can donate some without losing length! I am currently at about TBL.
