What is the best "hair toy" for a person with relatively short hair (my hair shrinks up to chin length even though its armpit length) who wants to wear two buns as a daily go-to protective hairstyle, without using hair ties of any kind (even the satin-covered ones give me tugging when I remove them)?

Your hair is slightly longer than mine, and I prefer using a hair stick. Also a curly, though I'm not a type 4!

Hair sticks would be a good starting point. I also found a small curved fork that holds beautifully and worked from somewhere around waist (I think). The curves made buns hold much better for me. Might be worth a look as well.

I used clawclips at this length, but your hair seems much longer than that (chin), so i also suggest hair sticks and forks of gentle material and good quality.

Yes use claw clips. My hair is iii and I couldn't wear a fork/stick until about hip. I tried, but it put way too much traction on my style, so claw clip it was until I could wear it comfortably.
