View Full Version : I’m calling it the Reverse Cinnibun.

It builds on the hand first and is laid down coil by coil; holds like cement and doesn’t need much scalp hair to just sit there. Doesn’t shed much, and doesn’t tangle too badly either. My current go-to bun.

I don't quite get how you do this, though?

Simsy

I start with a basic cinnibun starting position; the twisted hair is wrapped around the palm/4 fingers. Wrap again around 3 fingers; I drop the little finger. Wrap again around 2 fingers, then wrap the remaining length around the base of the bun. Then lay down each of the coils on your fingers, smallest to largest and adjusting the size of each coil as you go. The final coil always ends upsetting at the bottom of the bun for me; so it’s a good one to secure with a vertical fork.

I found making the wraps different sizes made the bun sit a bit neater.

Oh hang on, I'm trying to follow along... It's hard, but at least I can get a clearer view of it.

Normal cinnabuns usually sag after a while on me, especially if it's not day 1 hair.

Yeah; I have never gotten a cinnibun to stay properly for more than a few hours, no matter how I secure it. It took a few goes to work out what I was doing with this one; but once I figured out the wrap and fork position, it got easier.

Look up Shell Bun on YouTube and see if it is the same. It sounds like it from your description.

Ohhhh cool! Is it something like the ooh, was it, seashell bun? Ah yes https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=145028

But your technique of laying them down one by one is different - interesting! I'd like to try out when I have some energy. Is there anything else you did differently?

Edit: neko beat me to it while I was typing ;)

Yes, this is how to form a seashell bun, but on Simsy it looks like the coils overlap instead of being concentric.

I have never been able to make a seashell or cinnamon bun stay regardless of how many pins used. Interesting variant with a fork!

Just heard of and looked up the seashell bun; it’s pretty.
Similar technique, but I lay this one down over the base so the pony pokes through the middle and over the top. I thinks it’s a more self-contained version possibly...

As for the coils overlapping; that’s more how the hairs shifted. The coils are laid out beside each other, basically like a cinnibun. It’s only the outermost coil that goes over the top, mostly because that’s how the hair gets over to the outside but it just seems to hold a bit better.

I’ll try and talk DH into filming a quick tutorial on me. It won’t be the greatest quality but it should be enough to clear things up.

 Oooh I see! Yup, totally understand now :D great job! Looks lovely and neat.

Wrapping round the base each time looks like it might probably be the key to the extra stability? Almost anchoring the coils, whereas in a cinnabun and seashell bun the coils are all just next to each other, free to slip and sag as they wish

Brilliant!

OK, this is not how a seashell bun is formed; yours wraps quite differently. No wonder your coils aren't concentric and it looks so different. It is.

I don't believe I've seen this formation called by any other name.

And MusicalSpoons, beautiful!

Well, I can't get mine to look how you two get yours, looking so elegant and polished. I've tried to do mine about 8 times and this is the best I can get it. I will say this though - it's very comfortable and as solid as a rock, and I still prefer it to a normal cinnabun for this reason.

You can always drop the first coil; that’s probably a good bit of length gone. I don’t know how it would hold up; but I would be interested to find out.

I don't know, my taper pretty much starts right from the nape and ends up about half a pencil's width at the ends. A hair mystery perhaps? :eye:

Oh, I need to try this. Now that I've seen it, I get it! I like it better than the seashell bun, I think (the seashell bun reminds me of a question mark or a fiddlehead fern!). I'm going to use pins to hold it, though, not a fork/sticks. Well, as soon as I find my hairpins, that is. My makeup bag that holds my hair stuff has gone AWOL...

If it holds, it works...which is how this bun formed in the first place, I think. Take heart, I still can’t do a lot of buns that should work, and I’m not sure why. I think I run out of length before I run out of hair.

And yeah MusicalSpoons, it's like a month from BCL now?? It's wild lol. I only needed one loop less, but was still wrapping the ends a few times. I probably could have done all three loops, but wouldn't have had much to wrap (and therefore less stability). I'm still wearing it now, too! Very comfortable.

I made one the opposite direction and it looks like Sarah's other than the radian point being on the right. I don't believe our results are a result of direction though. For me at least I think it's more the spread of the coils before and/or during forking.

It is pretty comfortable though, and seems to be staying fine.

I tried this because it looks awesome and I love the idea of overlapping coils (and I wish I could do cinnabuns but those are impossible for me). With my length/thickness I could only do two coils and I wrapped around two fingers then one finger. I barely had any hair left to wrap around the base. But this is what I managed:

https://i.imgur.com/XAkfhiS.jpg?1

It doesn't look as awesome as OP's and others, but I like the ease of it and how it feels. I don't think it will hold enough for activities like climbing and working out, though maybe with more length it will get better. Maybe with more practice I'll find a way to make it work for whippy and bouncy activities. :)

Durability test; brushes, oiled and put up Thursday night before bed. It’s been slept on, sweated in, shoved under a hard hat, and rubbed a little on the car seat. Normally, my nautilus or Cinnabon would’ve exploded ends by now. This has merely unwound a little on the outermost coil. I like the look, but I can never achieve it deliberately.

My hair always has oil in it; I might not bother adding more but there’s always some left up near the scalp. My hair does hold a coil really well, so that might have some bearing on it too.

When I dampen my hair slightly, any bun will hold better. Often I first run damp palms down whatever length I can reach, and it helps. But yeah, anything that isn't braided and/or knotted in some fashion will not hold as well. Houdini hair doesn't like to stay put.
