I love a good hairstick bun, held in place by one elegant stick. I also love buns held invisibly in place by hair pins. Lots of hair pins. All the hair pins.

I tried Torrinpaige's new late Victorian braided bun today. The bun:

(pardon the lousy pictures)

The pins:

Twenty-nine is, I think, respectably large, but not a ginormous quantity. Everything held well with no poking.

Show me pictures of your buns, and the pins used to keep them on your heads.

This is just my usual braided protective style put up in a bun:

Gonna be a party pooper and confess how many pins it took: Absolutely zero.

Hehe, great idea for a thread! I'll have to remember this next time I use pins. I have a handful of them in my purse from the last time I did a pinned style and then got irritated with it and took it down. (Not the pins fault.)

Ooh, I like this idea!
Saturday we went to a wedding and I had put my hair in a braided bun with regular bobby pins. I knew I'd change my mind, so I brought a flexi. Sure enough, we were almost there and I started taking out pins and laying them on the dash. There weren't 29 but they just kept coming! It was pretty funny.
I'll have to take a pic next time.

If only I had a picture of all the pins that were in my wedding hairdo, there were so many! I would bet that if they had been hair pins rather than bobby pins I'd only have needed a quarter the amount.

Many years ago, when I had my hair done for my high school prom, the hairdresser put a grand total of 56 bobby pins in. And my hair was only around APL.

Since I'm really bad at securing buns with straight pins, the count would be much less impressive nowadays. I generally use 4 spin pins, sometimes 5, and maybe a bobby pin when there's a recalcitrant lock.

I'm impressed with the patience of anyone who'd put more than a handful of pins in, or sit whilst someone else did so. I'd go straight to claw clips if 6 - 8 Amish pins were insufficient.

9 pins is my standard cinnabun. 3 in the center coil, at left, top and middle. 6 in the outermost coil, two next to each of the inner pins. Maybe I could get away with a pin or two less, but it holds like a rock and is completely comfortable.

The bun I did in the first post is a much fancier bun. The kind I do when I have an hour and want to play with my hair. The kind with braids and swoopy bits that all have to be secured. Gazillions of pins are a known hazard of that type of bun. Especially since my hair needs quite a bit of persuasion to stay where it was put.

24 this time. More than it needed for support, but the ends of the yarn kept sticking out.

My "standard" pin-held bun is ten pins and I can get away with less if I need to. . . but this silly Brigitte Bardot hair used up an entire box and I had to walk to the drugstore with my hand on the top of my head holding everything steady to buy another package:

Pins slide right out of my hair WHILE I'm putting them in. So I don't use them haha.

great idea for a thread to:
- observe how many pins different updos require
- and how many pins you will add in few years while growing your hair to wonderful lengths ;)

A twisted updo, so not a bun, but it took a lot of pins.

A pretty standard (slightly crooked) cinnabun

What's holding it

I should do it with more complicated updos, those usually require packs of pins :D

OMG :agape: LOL

My hair requires 1 large spin pin or 2 halves....or 2 Amish pins ONLY...no matter the style :rollin:; and I can hold a half up with 1 large pin

That's what fine/wispy gets ya...even @ TBL ;)

But you all have gorgeous, thick , super long hair :bowtome:

Not a bun, but my hairdo today. The bobby pins were for some puffs to add some volume around my face. For most buns, it takes max 4 Amish pins, though more if I’m doing more than one part (two braids, two twists, etc)

I can't even imagine getting by with so few pins, Entangled, even though they appear to be the extra long type. Lucky you!

Indeed! I don't think it would be possible if they were the beauty store brand, either. My amish pins are super stiff and that makes their hold really strong. I think length-wise these are 2.5". And my hair isn't super slippery, so that helps.

Now I'm even more amazed. On my monitor your pins look like my beige 4" crinkly pins. I didn't realize yours are the shorter Amish pins. You really are lucky!

Ohh!! Interesting thread!!! I am finding that the longer my hair gets the less I seem to use pins. I have one hair style where I occasionally use 2 Amish pins, but other than that I haven't had to use them much. If I did more fancy updos without braids though I probably would need to start using pins!!

Today's hair with no pins (the scrunchy loosely on for decoration), it's just held with braids woven together. :)

Same. I only use something like 4 amish pins for a bun. If I do something like a coronet braid I might need more pins, I'm not sure.

Some while ago and using exactly the same style, my 1a hair took 8 long Amish pins whereas my friend's same-length 4b hair needed zero. Fie on you curlies for making us feel so inadequate.

I concur with Shepperdesss... the longer my hair gets the less aid it needs. I have been using my Upins a lot, lately. And 4 are sufficient.

Not amish pins. I don't know what they are called. I got them at Sally's. Amish pins are sturdier, I believe, but I don't have any.

I have to put at least a couple pins in each circle my hair goes around the base. Otherwise some of the middle bits fall down and look quite peculiar and saggy. So the longer my hair gets, the more pins I use. The paranda I used for this bun reaches to mid calf, so tons of pins.

I have been using more hairstick buns as my hair gets longer, so using pins less frequently.
