Does anyone still do sock buns once their hair is really long?

I know Torrin Paige on YouTube does sock buns and she’s past classic. She just uses the double hairtie method because she can’t reach the ends to roll them. I’ve seen the bun forms and I had visions of my hair either hating the material or loving it far too much, so I’m not brave enough to try one myself.

For me the problem is having enough hair to totally cover the form.

My hair is almost BCL and I do sock buns! :-) .
Love them when I sleep, when I want curls, or just when I want a big poofy bun on the top of my head.

I use a real sock, no form. It was one of my husband's dress socks that kind of matched my hair

I need to find something that matches my hair.

I don't because I don't like using elastics in my hair.

That must be why your hair is so gorgeous, Sarah!

I don't day to day but for a shoot they used three of the doughnuts for my hair!! It was hilarious watching the hairstylists try to do it, I was vomiting pins from my hair for ages afterwards. I looked pretty ridiculous when I went into macdonalds on my way home too...

aahh thank @longhairdreamee! and @barnet_fair it was quite funny, it came out well in the photos but getting into the car afterwards was an issue. In macdonalds, well.. felt like telling people my eyes are down here for a change :P They made it really secure, it wasn't wobbly at all as I thought it might be.

Edit: Just figured out who I felt like. A Who from the grinch!! haha

Jas, that is one spectacular hairstyle! It so much lovelier than this silly thing I attempted at Christmas - there's a bottle underneath there :p

Oh my life those are amazing pics Jas and Sarah. (You know you're a longhair when you can fit an entire bottle inside a style?! :rollin:)

What's the double hairtie method someone mentioned? Maybe it's possible with soft jersey fabric style ties instead of elastics. I'd love to try a sock bun again because last time was not successful, and that was at least 6 inches ago.

My hair is way shorter than all of yours but if you are looking for a non damaging way to fasten them I have been using satin scrunchies with success. :)

I honestly thought that any external 'fastening' was for decoration? I wonder if that's why my previous attempt didn't work! I assumed Torrin's double hairtie method would be for starting the bun because of excess length. I am intrigued; I'll have to look up the style properly.

Hmmm... are you using a bun form? I'm sure there are multiple ways to do sock buns. Maybe I'm doing them differently than you. :)

I did use a bun form, yes. I used the smallest (I think I only have one size, actually) and ended up with a head-eating bun for the only time in my life  it just wasn't very secure and was both difficult to wind and unwind.

Hmmm... I don't do any rolling at all. The main reason I do sock buns is that I don't have to put a lot of mental or physical effort in when I do them.

It looks like there are at least two different kinds of forms for sock buns. I use these (https://www.amazon.com/Pieces%EF%BC%8CTeenitor-Makers-extra-large-medium-Elastic/dp/B07CT9615X/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_194_t_0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=T0MJ4HGNKYF1F3W764NX). I like the set because of the range. The largest one is 3/4 of the size of my face. So, It could be a good option for any longhairs that are interested.

To put it in I do something like this only secured with satin scruchies instead of elastics.

You probably already knew all of this stuff. If not, I hope this helps. :)

Thank you, though that's not what I thought of as a sock bun - I don't know what we'd call it (doughnut bun, maybe?) but a true sock bun is formed by rolling hair from the ends around a tube made from the ankle part of a sock. I thought bun forms were to give a firmer start to sock buns, but maybe they are for the purposes of making a bun that looks like a sock bun but constructed very differently (a faux sock bun, if you will). The method in the video makes me think tangles galore!

(The second post in this thread mentioned not being able to reach the ends to roll them so I don't think I've completely misinterpreted the point.)

I guess maybe my hair isn't prone to tangles at least not to the extent that a satin hair scrunchy would make it tangle.

GroovyGranny mentioned that she used to use the roll up type as well so maybe the donuts are faux thing. That said. in this video (around 2:12) the girl demonstrates how you can make a tori shaped form out of a sock by cutting off the toe and rolling it. To me, it would make more sense that this is why these are called sock buns.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hevmqxnyzOc&t=164s

From what I can tell, there are two pretty firmly established ways to make them. One uses a tool like this:

https://image.dhgate.com/0x0/f2/albu/g5/M01/97/A0/rBVaI1hjMvKAfSCgAADMF4BL_dA248.jpg

and the another uses a tori like this:

https://rukminim1.flixcart.com/image/832/832/jiqb8nk0/hair-accessory/h/s/g/4-pieces-hair-donut-bun-maker-hair-styler-maker-ronud-chignon-original-imaf6gjgf8hg3z2q.jpeg?q=70.

The use of the tori would explain why some users have responded that they don't have enough hair to cover the form.

It also seems like the hairstyle of the month forum probably considers these forms to be part of a donut bun... or at least they do enough for them to use a video that includes a similar form this April.

I'm mostly just posting this as an option for longhairs that might have too much length for rolling.

Excellent points! I wish there were a concensus *either* way, less confusing.

The top rolly thingies make it very similar to a scarf bun :D I used to love those when I was younger. (Scarf bun is in the LHC Hairstyle Thesaurus.)

I doubt I'd have enough hair to cover even a medium-sized one, but I might try that first step with my small ones, just out of curiosity.

Any very-longhairs have tips for the rolling-from-the-ends type of sock bun?

Good points

I just realized I was calling donut buns sock buns as well.... so sorry :o

Perhaps because the end result is the same, but we are just using a different form :hmm:

The fact of the matter is that I have a heck of a time rolling sock and donut buns...and began using this bun maker (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XX9HV46/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) which I love!

It is much easier to use than the donuts or socks; they kill my arms and when I drape my hair over it then wrap the ends, but the bun is raised too high for me (small head??) :p

Plus I get tangles galore securing them with hair ties :tmi:

With that bun maker you make a ponytail, catch the hair about 2/3 of the way to the ends, then roll to the base = done in a minute and it is self securing (no ties or pins needed) :cheer:

RE: LONGER hair....I saw a video where they had the whole sock minus the toe placed over the hair tie on the ponytail.
They then unrolled the sock to cover the ponytail to the tip and then began spreading the hair and rolling the sock down; it contained the length much neater and easier.

The first tool doesn't work for me at all.

The way I learned (in 2007ish on this forum) that buns made with both these tools are called sockbun.

I made a bunform from my husbands socks in the beginning.
It is made from a cut off sock, rolled up, sewn together, shaped like a donut.
Like this:

https://i.imgur.com/nW4kNqIl.jpg

When it was worn out, I bought a foam donut.
It works exactly the same.

Rolling doesn't work for me at all, it creates too much tangles.
I guess my hair is too long for the rolling technique.
I make a ponytail, slip on the form, bend over so my hair falls forwards, then cover the form with my hair and place an elastic
(not a real elastic but a "ring" of a cut pantyhose) over it to keep it secured.
Then I either braid and wrap the rest of the hair, or just wrap and leave , or put a scarf around it :o
I don't need extra pins.

I once had a velvet covered bun maker like those straight ones posted above. I used and used and used it on my daughter until the wire inside broke, and have never seen them again. I never thought of using a scarf instead, might try that.

I still have a velvet one ....a HAIRAGAMI (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003XZWEFS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) which is no longer sold.

Groovy Granny, our velvet one was different. It was not a stiff band.

It seemed to be made of wire inside, kind of like a twisty tie only very sturdy. Or like two sturdy ties lying parallel and twisted together at each end. You inserted the hair into the space between the two wires, rolled it all up like a sausage, then created a bun shape by curling the two ends around to meet each other and simply twisting them together to hold it all.

The velvet was merely a covering and the attractive part was the ends formed the effect of a bow at the top of the bun. I really loved it.
