View Full Version : If Hair is Dead - Rename the Hair Length Chart
neko_kawaii

What would the labels on the traditional LHC length chart look like if renamed for various mythological dead/undead creatures?
This arose in the Knee-length and Beyond thread and got silly fast (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=54031&p=3714526&viewfull=1#post3714526). WE NEED THIS CHART!
What are the various creatures and their relative deadness? The longer, the deader. Right?
Discuss!

Oh, but "vampire" HAS to be on the bottom!

I would think disembodied undead are the deadest. Zombies are probably the least dead since they rot, so there is still biological activity going on there.
I also think you could say that the more mindless, the more dead, if you're interpreting dead as "death of the self" rather than just biological death. Which would bump vampires (at least as they're commonly portrayed in modern pop culture) and liches up a few notches.

I agree with the disembodied as the most dead and zombies as the least. Lets see if I can reorder my list on that scheme.
Zombie (rot and eat brains)
Ghoul (they eat bodies so are close to alive)
Vampire (drink blood so alivish but not as close as Ghouls)
Lich (might not have actually died died)
Mummy
Revenent
Draugr (live in their graves so more dead)
Skeleton (no flesh anymore)
Wight (animated bones + spirit)
Poltergiest (ghost that can affect the real world)
Ghost (uncorporeal)
Wraith (has a sense of omen or portent (according to Wikipedia) so even less living than a standard ghost)
A mindlessness scheme could be interesting but I think it would be hard to do because of different portrayals of mental state of undead.

I didn't even know there were so many lifeless things, so I'll have to read up on most of the things that are on the list, haha.

How about a rusalka? Depending on which story you hear, the rusalki are the spirits of maidens who were murdered or committed suicide by drowning. Sometimes they would try to drown living people. Plus, all of the paintings I've seen show them with long hair!

Added Rusalka, Jikininki, Onryo, and Lemures.
Zombie (rot and eat brains)
Ghoul (they eat bodies so are close to alive)
Vampire (drink blood so alivish but not as close as Ghouls)
Lich (might not have actually died died)
Mummy
Revenent
Draugr (live in their graves so more dead)
Rusalka (sometimes have bodies, sometimes are spirits depending on the story)
Skeleton (no flesh anymore)
Wight (animated bones + spirit)
Jikininki (ghost that eats people)
Onryo (ghost that can cause natural disasters and maybe steal souls)
Poltergiest (ghost that can affect the real world)
Ghost (uncorporeal)
Wraith (has a sense of omen or portent (according to Wikipedia) so even less living than a standard ghost)
Lemures (formless spirits)
I am unsure of the placement of Jikininki because they are ghosts thus uncorporeal but they also eat people so should it go with spirits that affect the world or with undead that eat?

So... would Thanatos be floor+ or bald?

So... would Thanatos be floor+ or bald?
Thanatos as God of Death or the personification of death?
If you mean does he count as a rank on the scheme then he doesn't.
Case 1, he is alive. Case 2, he is amortal and not on the dead/undead scheme.
In none of these cases is he a species and I don't think individuals count for list categories only species and gods and personifications aren't undead.
If you are asking for what length of hair would Thanatos have according to his species
In case 1 he would be bald as he is alive (unless the god of a dead religion counts as dead then he would have floor+ hair). In case 2 I have no clue what his hair length would be as amortal is outside of life/death. Unless his hair was an imaginary number length. He could have hair length i.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't think these were undead.
We may need a mythological/supernatural in general hair length chart.

& What do you do with Rapunzel's hair in Tangled? It seems to me that it changes length from scene to scene. I know the old fairy tale said her hair was 70' long, but there were some frames where it seemed a lot longer. And then I've seen some Rapunzel dolls on the toy store shelves with only Classic Length? I guess having magical hair means the length is variable, as well as having dirt-repelling properties while running through the forest?

Rapunzel is definitely way more dead than alive because her hair must be as long as her tower. Even if it changes length before the cut, her hair is still significantly longer than her. As her hair is so very long I think she's a Lemure. The dolls were obviously depictions after her hair was cut when she was revived a bit (A haircut brings back the mostly dead. No more need for Miracle Max.) I don't know what she'd be then as sometimes her hair cut is a bob, sometimes its longer, and I haven't worked out where lengths other than ridiculously long and bald fall on the undead scale.
What percentage dead do you have to be to be a zombie? aka How long must your hair be before you are dead enough to be a zombie?

Well.... The most alive thing should be the bald, so Quintessence? Or is that more concept than thing?
And the most dead, the deadest of all would be the longest of long length. What is the deadest dead?

Isn't quintessence a type of dark energy when not being used as an adjective? Maybe the alivest alive is biologically immortal like the immortal jellyfish, symmetrically dividing bacteria/yeast, or planarian flatworms.
A carcass. Mmm carcass length. Has a ring to it.
Can't carcass be used to refer to something still alive? I can't think of anything deader though, except maybe ashes or dust and I don't think those qualify as once living anymore.

What about vampire ashes? We take something undead then make it super extra double dead. Maybe an angry spirit can posses the vampire, the possessed vampire then takes the life force of someone and turns them into a carcass, possibly even creating a new wraith. Then the villagers burn the vampire, killing the angry spirit, the spooky skeleton inside the vampire ceases to exist, and the microbial life force of the person they fed on is also killed. Plus we have a lone carcass and a new angry spirit to continue the undead-deadness cycle.

Well, I thought "Tinkerbell = Pixie", but actually, her hair's up in a bun, so that doesn't work.
And Rapunzel = Beyond until post-haircut when, is that a Pixie?
I guess I'm more into fairies than undeads.

Well, I've been playing around with this, but it's definitely not complete. Hmmm... my list seems to all come from Disney
1. Tinkerbell: Pixie (moreso because she is a pixie than because of actual length; well, wait a minute! As tiny as she is, even if her hair were down to her feet, it would still be only Pixie-length on a real-sized person!)
2. Thumbelina: Chin (her hair looks longer than Tinkerbell's, but she's still really small, thumb-sized, in fact. Well, come to think of it, I think Tinkerbell's about the size of a firefly; so yes, I think Thumbelina's hair's longer.)
3. Rapunzel post-haircut: Awkward Place
4. Snow White: Shoulder
5. Cinderella: Shoulder Blade
6. Mother Gothel: Bra Strap
7. Waist
8. Belt
9. Classic
10. Princess Jasmine (Aladdin): Mid thigh/Finger tip
11. Knee
12. Mermaid: Calf
13. Unicorn: Ankle (It has a ponytail! It belongs on the chart...)
14. Angel: Floor
15. Rapunzel pre-haircut: Beyond
This could turn into an LHC fundraiser, if the website chose to print T-shirts or T-shirt dresses with these lengths pre-marked. Hair-measuring shirts, you know. So, just print the new length names without reference to body markers, because the body markers will be different for everybody. Sort of like https://www.ebay.com/itm/045-Manly-Beard-Measurement-Mens-Tee-Shirt-ruler-funny-facial-hair-college-party/253676153907?hash=item3b1046ec33:m:mWLl3IlgyqGXo0O Ii__PQ3Q

But I'd like mine to be flowery & feminine-looking, and made out of cotton-lined satin, and purple/pink/green/rainbow-colored...
So an undead line, a fairy tale line, and a beard-length line of shirts for the gentlemen. Color selection, size selection... Available in either shirt or maxi-dress length. Or maybe trousers with markings going down the leg for folks who'd prefer pants to a dress...

So I am Rapunzel pre hair cut.
I don’t think you are mostly dead and thus undead unless your hair covers half your body. I am arbitrarily saying that is classic length. So:
Classic – Zombie
Upper thigh - Ghoul
Mid thigh/Finger tip - Vampire
Lower thigh - Lich
Top of knee - Mummy
Middle of knee - Revenant
Bottom of knee - Draugr
Upper calf - Rusalka
Mid calf - Skeleton
Lower calf - Wight
Ankle - Jikininki
Heel - Onryo
Floor - Poltergeist
Beyond - Ghost
Far beyond - Wraith
Even farther beyond - Lemure
By this I would probably be a ghost.
Combining these two and I am the ghost of Rapunzel pre hair cut. However Rapunzel pre hair cut would be a lemure, so am I the ghost of a lemure?

I mean, she'd been keeping herself young & beautiful (not to mention, alive) for thousands of years on the magic flower ... but she's got really curly hair ... so somebody with hair like hers, if it appears to be BSL, how long would it be stretched?
