View Full Version : Hairtyped pictures for reference

This is not to replace the official Visual Hairtyping guide (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=116252), which is The Reference for describing each classifier. However as different types look different on each head of hair, it might be useful to browse a thread with a range of defined hairtyping pics.

Please post your hairtyping picture here along with your full classifiers (type/strand coarseness/volume - e.g. 1b/C/ii), and also please make sure you followed the hairtyping instructions so we have the most accurate reference possible :)

If there was debate when you asked for help to identify your type, you may wish to mention that and why a certain type was chosen, but that is of course optional, as is any other information you may wish to add. The main objective is to provide pictures with their type clearly identified, to help others trying to decide their own.

Also, if you've found your hairtype has changed with time, if you want to post a photo of each different typing (e.g. if you started as definitely 1c, then found you were 2a/2b, and eventually ended up with 2c) that would be useful too! In the same post or as separate posts, whichever you prefer

Edit: in order to keep this as easy to browse and use as reference as possible please keep discussion to a minimum - ideally if you want to compliment someone, please include your own picture ;) realistically nobody's going to enforce this, but it would be a courtesy to members who do want to use this for reference.

Also, I won't be able to index this thread at all. If you want to find pictures of a certain types, you can use the 'Search Thread' tool to find the posts :)

For type-specific discussion we do have threads; I can add the links to them given some time, meanwhile they can be found in the Index to useful links and resources (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/announcement.php?f=9&a=11). If the existing threads don't cover a specific type/texture you're looking for, you're welcome to start one yourself :D

Finally, if you have questions about your own type or hairtyping in general, please ask over on the Hairtyping Help thread (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=150587), *not* here. Thank you!

These two threads are awesome, MusicalSpoons. Hairtyping tests are pretty much illegal for me, plus I'm working with two different textures (growing out heat damage) so I don't even know what my hair would do if I air dried without product, but I look forward to understanding hair types more :o

2c/3a/F/M/ii
My texture also changes frequently, so my stats are a reflection of the average curl of my hair. These individual pictures aren't perfectly 2c/3a.

And perhaps, in the interest of keeping this thread useful and easy to browse though, there should be a rule like that of the monthly style threads; posts without any pictures of hairtyping should be kept to a minimum. In other words, if you want to compliment someone's hair, put your hairtyping picture in your post!

That being said, Groovy Granny, I love your wurls! We don't see them nearly often enough.

Once manipulated and with products, the curls quickly soften to wurls and have definition now that I am using more oil based products.

Your color and curls are so pretty

Thank you Spikey, and again a great suggestion! I'll edit the OP :) this thread will work best as a reference if it's not half discussion  Such beautiful wurls and curls you have there :thud: and Groovy Granny gorgeous as well - as you know I'm a big fan of your colour but those wurls - oh my! :crush:

Here's my first hairtyping pic from April 2018, typed as 1b/F/M/ii:

I later typed as 1b/1c when just the ends kept drying like this:

And most recently, 1c/2a in May 2019:

This one I'd have said 2a if it weren't for that random foot of weirdly straight hair in the middle :rollin:

I have 1c/2a/c/iii hair cut into layers. It might actually be iii because of the layers. right now with layers it is firmly ii.

Everyone has such beautiful hair! Here was mine from last month, which was my very first hair typing photo. With the help of LHC, this is 1a / C / iii. However, I'm thinking a tiny amount of my bottom layer nape hairs are 1b, they are also more coarse too. They can't be seen at all. Not sure if there's enough of them to change my type to 1a/1b.

I have my hair typed as 3a/M/iii. I believe this is correct although my hair doesn't appear as curly without properly styling. I say it looks 2c/3a in these pictures. My canopy is definitely more wavy while my under layers are more curly. With actual styling products, I'm able to encourage a little more curl out of my canopy. All I did was wash my hair with my shea moisture shampoo bar, rinse with lime juice diluted in water, and condition with shea moisture JBCO mask. I did not apply any styling products and I let my hair air dry. I'm actually quite surprised by the lack of frizz!

You can see my 3a under layer ringlets here a little better.

I'm 2c/3a--tighter curl pattern underneath and sometimes down to shoulder at half the wavelength that drapes from the rest that tends to comb out to braidwaves,
uber Fine at over 32 strands/mm,
and III at 11.5cm/4.5" pony circumference.
Head circ: 23" (makes my F III pony circ. appear normal in size, and hairtoys shrunken compared to many others). Hair colour: all of 'em from white to black.

The usual sausage ringlets that form:

From the front, post air drying, and then wide-tooth-combed out (very fine and silky, so holding the curl pattern that now drops out with length is just fruitless):

I pretty much only have good texture pictures from times I've cut it off and documented the regrowth. As you can see, my hair is neither straight nor wavy. It's textured, but I have some smooth hairs. It appears much fuller than it is due to volume, especially after washing.

It appears very straight when it's up or braided, but not when I let it loose.

I call it 1c/2a m/c ii/iii, also known as "wild woman hair". It's a big mix of thickness and textures and they don't behave the same way. I have had people try to get it to hold a curl and it won't despite every method they could come up with.

I'm aware that I smirk. My husband has teased me about it many times. All the women in my line seem to have this almost involuntary response to life.

There is no 2b/2c yet, so i am putting mine. It usually dries to tighter S wave pattern with one or two spiral curls at the sides without any manipulation or styling. The thickness is F/M (gotta change that in my profile) and ii (ponytail circumference around 3 inches, though i need to remeasure, as i feel it got thinner :( ) :

Well I certainly hope I am in the right thread now...

On the Bright Side : I am making A Contribution
On the Not-So-Bright Side : Uploading from my phone makes the pictures rotate. Sorry

My hair predominantly 4a, 4b to a lesser extent 4c, with random 3b and 3c strands thrown in for fun.

In this picture my hair is about 65% dry, unmanipulated (which is why I have the drips on my T-shirt) and there is not a stitch of product. I am currently water only, and this is fresh after a rinse.

Here comes some free neck-cersises...

My hair is 2b/M/ii, possibly 2b/2c or 2a/2b due to my wurls/spirals and loose waves. This is how it looks freshly washed, air-dried, and unstyled:

https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=46548&d=1641172846

After a couple days without washing my waves tend to fall out, and I can brush my hair without it poofing up quite as much as it would on a wash day. This is how it looks brushed out:

https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=46530&d=1641004052

These photos were taken a few days apart. (Sorry they're so big, I'm not sure how to resize them.)

Here's how you can tell if you have 1C hairtype. I was excited when I finally found some information on this! :o
The above picture is how my hair looks when it's all down. All the pictures were done freshly washed, no brushing and Airdried on the same day.

It's coarse, and is part of the straight hair types.
What makes this hairtype different in the other straight hairtypes is that it has very subtle waves when you do a half up hairstyle.Note: you have to take a flash picture or be in the sun to see them, because you dont really know you have waves (you think it's all straight), until you part it in a half updo and take a picture. The other straight hair types 1A and 1B don't have those waves if you did the same technique, it would still look straight (this is from memory from a website, that I stumbled upon). I think this makes the most sense because with 2A hair types they have waves when they have it all down and the waves are visible without flash camera or sunlight.
I'm sorry too! I don't know how to resize my pictures. Websites and apps don't show you what how big they are so I gave up.

https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=46578&d=1641773603

Waves can look old Hollywood waves or little waves

https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=46577&d=1641772311

That's probably why when I get done with the hairdressers, I have chunks of hair that look like they were missed the next day. Now I know why! Although, please excuse that little chunk in the first photo I usually part it to the side and that's how it's cut to make it look nice.

I find this really interesting because your hair looks like mine after I brush it out, if I do true "hair typing" protocol my hair has distinct clumps and waves(It overall doesn't look "straight") so...should I just say it's 2a then?

I would say yes! ;)
My hair never gets wavey as yours. Beautiful!

If you can compare Brights pictures particularly the second one, and my first one. You can see she has waves without sunlight and bends more than mine, even a few days after. My canopy is straight from day one even with those flicks, and bends.

2b/F/ii/iii
I am finally confident about my hair type. My strands are very fine, can barely feel a single strand, and my circumference is hard to find because I have a lot of layers, thick bangs and face framings. When I do a ‘unicorn’ ponytail for a haircut, it measures just about 4 inches, sometimes a little less.

Here are two separate typing washes, as they came out a little different. Both washed with clarifying shampoo, conditioned, squeezed out excess water in shower and then left alone to dry. The first time some suggestions were 2b/2c, which may be more visible when I cut out the bleach damage as my nape hairs do occasionally create a random spiral. But for now, I agree 2b is the best category.
https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=47288&d=1655917931
I find this thread more helpful than the original hair typing ‘sticky’ photos, those photos are small with not the best lighting and difficult to see. So hope this contribution helps someone!

I went for an old photo (only got selfies I'm afraid) because i think my pattern is a lot more visible when my hair is longer.

i see it as 1c/F/ii (2.5"), in this photo it is air dried, but honestly i use a hair dryer most of the time so im usually 1b as it dries straight with the dryer.
