These are stainless steel, and cost out to about 60 cents each. I recently got some of the regular ones and haven't been impressed. But then I'm comparing them to spin pins. Even using a lot of the regular hairpins didn't hold very well. It doesn't help that my hair has a lot of slip these days.

I much prefer spin pins, myself, there's no way they can fall out, whereas U pins do (in my hair, anyway.)

Unfortunately I've never been able to use U-pins, they jump out of my hair and regular bobby pins slide out. I prefer these beasties:

eta: To answer the question, yes I do think stiffer pins work better.

I personally really like those ones, but I would get them in a longer size, potentially. I’ve never used spin pins, but I’m pretty sure you’re right about U pins not staying in as well though. But I also don’t use them beyond their capacity - I use them similarly to the tiny little straight pins, but these ones just hold more hair. They definitely won’t be gripping anything together, but will most of the time just maintain it lying down to the head.

I use 3" steel pins like these or the skinny straight type; they work better for me than spin pins (which don't at all and never have). I have quite slippy hair and started needing 6-8 of this type at or after classic.

I use both spin pins and the 2-3" crinkle Amish U pins...depending on the bun and the slip in my hair.

That said...I tend to grab the mini spin pins the most.
But if my scalp is sensitive I will switch to a U pin, as the spin pins really hug your scalp.

And yes...the stiffer pins do work better....for me :o

Thanks everyone! I will hold off buying anything for now. Rowdy posted a product link. If you scroll down at that link, you'll see several videos on how to use hairpins. I'm going to play around a bit with these methods.
