View Full Version : The Neoma Knot

We have a braided Neoma knot (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=137742&highlight=braided+neoma+knot) thread, but not one on the Neoma knot. I may be a little partial, but I think that it's one of the most secure buns. And once you learn how to do it, it's easy, too.

Here's a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9W-qAKY_1I&list=PLvcdWeFVd9x49JVVfbRzLrKmIUDIRlb7U by our very own
Neko Kawaii (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxMMgBLVnmIkbYMsAJ-JBKw)Neko Kawaii.

And here are step-by-step instructions: https://imgur.com/a/70kZU.

Today I discovered a new variation. Make a basic Neoma knot. Instead of securing it with a hair stick, clip a Ficcare across the top loop. The result will be something that looks like a French twist and holds like glue.

Post your Neoma knot pics here!

The video seems very different from the instructions; I don't see two loops in the video?

Also, if you clip a Ficcare over the top loop (the one caused by the tail being pulled in part way?), then how does the bottom loop look like a french twist? It holds for me, really well it seems like, but the loop is just very loopy. Maybe I should try to switch which loop is the top loop?

Pictures, and help with more videos or the like would be nice because I am hand-eye coordination impaired xD

There are two loops in the video as well. :flower:

If you clip a Ficcare over the top loop, the bottom loop flips up horizontally and the base of the bun acts like the "spine" of a French twist. I'm sorry, but I don't know any better way to describe it.

Sadly, I suck at selfies, so more pictures will not be forthcoming from me.

Ah, I see where I missed it! It's like a stealth loop. I *think* I get it now for the horizontal version, anyway.

Should the top loop be the original loop or the loop formed by the pony tail?

It's a really nice, secure bun. I'll still have to fiddle to get the tension right, and to get to sit right, and I'm probably doing it incorrectly xD but it's comfortable, doesn't seem to tug, and will let me wear sticks more vertically.

Now to see if I can manage it with forks!

I'm glad you were able to get it to work for you.

The original loop is on the bottom.

Yeah, this bun, like most wrapped buns, is all about proper tension. I find that if I wrap the length tightly around the base, it works well.

This was the first bun I could get to hold securely when I started learning how to use sticks and forks :D I've not worn it for a while because getting the loops big enough and equal sized to go over all the millions of wraps around the base has eluded me since about FTL, but it would be nice to revisit it.

It's also the bun I *always* recommend for slippery hair

Very good instructions, my hair is too short to do it but looks like it will be a good alternative for nautilus bun. :)

You know, I've never tried this bun, somehow. I'll have to give it a go later when I'm home. I'll post a picture if it turns out decent. :)

I did it - it turns out the key is to enlarge the ponytail loop before making the second (I used to try to adjust after making it, which didn't work properly and made the whole thing messy when I tried too much). Yay  it's perfectly secure without being tight.

It's BSL and I can just manage to make one. Your hair is thicker than mine, but I'll bet you will be able to do it when your hair is just a couple inches longer. :flower:

My hair is 4.4", it doesn't feel super thick or anything but no matter how many times I tried my ends escaped out of the bun. I can almost do it, it will be my mini-milestone, long enough to be able to do the neoma knot properly. :D

Oh thank you Neoma :flower: A few hours later a few slim locks of hair (old face framers) had fallen out from one of the loops and I remembered that was another reason I stopped wearing it for a while; maybe twisting slightly would prevent that though :) Happily, the bun itself otherwise stayed put!

Thanks to this thread I tried out today. My hair is just barely long enough to do it if I wrap 3 fingers instead of all 4. It took me a few tries to get it comfy and to stay. But I love it and think it's really pretty. In going to do it every day this week to practice and get better with it. Can't wait till I've got a couple more inches to work with.

I finally got around to uploading these pictures. I've been experimenting for a few days and I think I've got it. (At first my brain was like, "Is it a Nautilus? Is it a Celtic Knot? Am so confuse." ) I'm still working on getting tension right, I've tended to make it a bit too tight for my taste. Pic spam:

Not sure what happened with that last one, it looks different. It may have been one where I was trying to make it looser. Any tips, anyone?

ANYWAY, it's very secure so I'm happy to have learned it. :)

Zesty, it looks so pretty on you! Yeah, I'm not sure that the last one is a Neoma knot. :flower:

I often do the same thing that you did in the first pic, especially when I wrap it tight. I exit the fork or stick throug the bottom loop instead of through the hole in the bottom loop. I also use a pair of sticks sometimes. :flowers:

This was interesting. I'm able to do a bun with these instructions (I'm APL+ with quite a thin hair), though there's no tail to wrap around and the second loop is very thin. But when I stab this bun with my 2 prong metal fork, it holds like a rock the whole day, no need to fix it. I have been very active physically a couple of days now and this bun has helped me a lot.

As usual, my rendition looks absolutely nothing like these pretty, fluffy buns. I twist rather heavily to help mine hold. I cannot believe I have never done this one before (although I might have inadvertently, when failing at some other bun).

I think with my hair, this bun and the LWB are pretty much the same bun! Even wrapping around 3 fingers instead of 4, I can only get just over 1 full wrap of my lengths around the base (it's like 1.5 wraps), so I end up spreading the knot over the base after 1 wrap anyway, and trying to desperately tuck/wrap the rest of the length of hair underneath.

My first attempt was questionable, random strands came out, but my second is okay!
I only have enough length after the second loop to tuck it round the base, but it's still feels secure despite not being wrapped tightly aware and not having the length. Will see how it holds up. Posted a pic to IG.

Crosspost from my ABC Hairstyle Challenge (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=146204&p=3965675&viewfull=1#post3965675). I hope that by creating this 9-picture grid format, I can slowly build up my own hairstyle dictionary, or pictionary for visual learners.

This is my 14th assignment for my second round of LHC’s ABC Hairstyle Challenge: Neoma Knot.

I follow Neoma's picture tutorial (https://imgur.com/a/70kZU)step by step, but let me explain it in my own words.

First, I gather all my hair in the center back of my head into a pony without an elastic tie.
With my left palm facing the scalp, my left thumb pointing at 4 o'clock, and my index pointing at 3 o'clock, I clamp the pony.
I use my right hand to flip the hair up and over my left hand's index-pinkie, let the hair fall behind the wrist on the left.
I move my right hand under the left wrist, smooth and grab the hair, and pull it counterclockwise to the right, forming the first loop.
I continue to pull the hair up until the left fingers inside the first loop can grab and crochet some of it out, forming the second loop.
Pay attention not to pull the whole length through.
My left index holds the second loop and presses it at 2 o'clock, while my left thumb expands the first loop and presses it at 8 o'clock with the help of my right hand.
I wrap the rest of the hair counterclockwise around the base of the pony and tuck it.
I insert the tip of the stick inside the second loop on top, feel my scalp, pick some hair, then slide it through a little bit of the wrapped base (because at this point it is impossible to slide it across the pony core), and poke it out of the middle of the first loop on the bottom.
This knot bun is INSANELY tight, so I'd suggest going easy on the first loop right from the beginning or you'd probably have to redo it after you find out it's impossible to stick it through the two loops.
This is what it looks like:

Interestingly, in the LHC thesaurus, it is mentioned that Neoma Knot is compared with Shell's Everyday Bun (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=155578&p=3963141&viewfull=1#post3963141), they do share some similarities.
Shell's bun drapes the hair to the right side, while Neoma's method drapes it to the left side, so the rest of the hair goes clockwise or counterclockwise, Shell's version adds a wrapping motion and eats more length. They both place the second loop on the right side (Neoma's at 2 o'clock, Shell's can be at 3 o'clock). I think it’s a matter of personal preferences and a fun way to explore variations and hand gestures.

But then, in the Neoma Knot thread (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=150349), there's a video tutorial from Neko Kawaii (https://youtu.be/Y9W-qAKY_1I), so of course, I follow it and do it on my own.
And interestingly, Neko's version pulls the second loop down at 8 o'clock and expands the first loop at 2 o'clock, essentially reversing the positions of the two loops, and the result is a completely different-looking bun, I almost attempt to call it Neko Knot.
It's got more curves which are quite lovely, and it is not as tight as Neoma's original version, so it's easier to manipulate the hair, which I think would be more suitable for people with shorter hair, well, at least hip length, because all the knot buns are length eaters.
This is what it looks like.
