View Full Version : I think I just invented a new bun!

This is so unlike me :) I was attempting to do a wrap bun, which my hair is still too short for, when I started fiddling with different twists and stuff to make a bun. I thought this one came out really pretty. I don't think I've seen one like this before, but if I'm wrong, please correct me!

My hair is in the no man's land between APL and BSL for reference.

If this is a first, I'd like to dub it the "Gibson Bun" because it looks like a Gibson Tuck. It's also kinda french twisty looking from the other side :) On second thought, I'm thinking of calling it a Gibson Twist instead, it's more of a twist than a bun IMHO.

First, the written instructions (reverse directions if you're a lefty):
Hold your hair in a pony
Place single stick under pony parallel to the floor with the "top" in your right hand
Pull pony down over stick, then up and behind the end of the stick
Rotate stick clockwise until "top" is on the left of your head
Stab stick through hair and push end through to the left of your head (don't make it too tight)
Bring the tail of the pony down behind the end of the stick and stab stick through (without rotating) to your right side
Top should be sticking out the left of the bun
Tuck ends of hair into the crevice

LONG HAIR VARIATION (thanks danacc)
* Hold your hair in a pony
* Place single stick under pony parallel to the floor with the "top" in your right hand
* Pull pony down over stick, then up and behind the end of the stick
* Rotate stick clockwise until "top" is on the left of your head
* Stab stick through hair and push end through to the left of your head (don't make it too tight)
* My longer hair modification: Bring the tail of the pony down behind the end of the stick, bring it to the right side, then up behind the other end of the stick. Bring it to the left side, then down behind the stick. Continue wrapping until you run out of length. Basically, you are wrapping the tail in a circle, keeping the hair behind the stick.
* Invert the stick, picking up some scalp hair on the left side, and weave the stick through (without rotating) to your right side
* Top should be sticking out the left of the bun
* Tuck any stray ends of hair into the crevice

Slower with my arm out of the way to better see. Excuse the weird lighting and me speaking to my BF who just got home. Hopefully with both the videos you can see what I'm doing:

Ta da!

Be careful not to work it too snuggly or you won't be able to do the final poke. I had to redo it a couple of times for making it too tight. It holds very nicely. I would practice this with cheap plastic (sacrificial) or metal sticks at first, wouldn't want anyone to snap a treasure.

Maybe I'll give it another try tomorrow.

Ok, I went and made another video in the bathroom that's slower and I try to get my arm out of the way. Excuse the funny lighting, and don't do the funny thing I do with my arm, that was purely so you could see what I'm doing ;)

I'll keep both videos posted, please see the OP for the update.

P.S. My BF just came home so you can hear my happy dogs and me greeting him :)

Thanks for slowing that down for me (and Wavelength) I think I can get it if I study it for a bit and practice. I think my hair is about the same length as yours. It still looks hard to me, but I can see that it is actually easy to do once you get it figured out.

I had the same problem, so I just tucked in what I could and secured the rest with some small claw clips. It's not perfect, but it looks good nonetheless:)

Thanks for this, manderly! Reminds me a bit of an orchid wrap. It took me a few tries to get it right because I couldn't figure out the twisting, I kept getting it too loose the first twist and then just messing up the rest. I have no idea what I did, but it looked nothing like what you made:D Still, all's well as ends well. And the ends are well:cool:

Ok, I tied it. But I had to adapt it a bit - I use a two-prong fork as with a stick the bun doesn't hold. Thanks a lot for slippery hair . I wrap the pony once around the whole thing, because the tail is too long to stuff it under. So I wrapped it once around the whole bun, coiled it a bit and oho! I could stuff it into the "pocket", but I had to secure it with a bobbypin (the slippery hair again). A great style.

Thanks a lot for showing it to us.

I love this twist!

I made a different modification to make it work with my hip-length hair. After weaving the stick through the first time--from right to left--I wrapped the tail around the hair behind the stick. Then I flipped the whole thing to insert the stick from left to right.

So, the instructions become:
First, the written instructions (reverse directions if you're a lefty):
Hold your hair in a pony
Place single stick under pony parallel to the floor with the "top" in your right hand
Pull pony down over stick, then up and behind the end of the stick
Rotate stick clockwise until "top" is on the left of your head
Stab stick through hair and push end through to the left of your head (don't make it too tight)
My longer hair modification: Bring the tail of the pony down behind the end of the stick, bring it to the right side, then up behind the other end of the stick. Bring it to the left side, then down behind the stick. Continue wrapping until you run out of length. Basically, you are wrapping the tail in a circle, keeping the hair behind the stick.
Invert the stick, picking up some scalp hair on the left side, and weave the stick through (without rotating) to your right side
Top should be sticking out the left of the bun
Tuck any stray ends of hair into the crevice

November 15th, 2008, 08:14 PM
Ooooh! Thank you so much for doing the long hair modification on it! I was sure someone could figure it out if they had the hair to test it! I'd love to see pictures.

Here's my variation-- it looks a bit different, but I think it's because it's tighter. I also did it left-handed, so I reversed the directions. I think it looks pretty nice like this, too!

Please allow for my standard disclaimers-- I haven't combed my hair since 5 am, and it's wash day, so my hair is kinda gnarly. Oh, and the bun is messy, of course.
Straight back:

From the right:

I managed to get this on the first try with your directions, and video (I watched the second one several times)! That's fabulous-- and it's secure, too-- I think I'll wear it to work tomorrow!

In short, this is the perfect combination-- gorgeous, secure, and fast (it seems to be done on the first try, without fail). Oh, and no twisting.

Also, manderly, if I may say, your hair is looking gorgeous! The color, the shine, the bounce-- and it seems like it's gotten a spurt, it looks really long, too!

I'm very excited about this new bun. :D

manderly
November 17th, 2008, 04:28 PM
Wow chloeishere! I don't know what you did different, it looks so different. But it came out really pretty, like you did some kind of magic knot!
Funny you say you reversed it, the top of your stick is on the same side it is with me. Looks like you must have reversed something else too. Let me know what you did, because it looks lovely :D

And thank you for the compliment :flower:

November 17th, 2008, 05:03 PM
Hmm, I am still rotating clockwise, so maybe mine is upside down? I've tried doing it another three times, and it looks the same every time. It feels really awkward to me to rotate the stick counterclockwise, so I dunno. :D

ETA: scratch that, I just managed to rotate counter-clockwise, and it looked pretty much the same.
Counter clockwise:
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k152/chloeishere/IMG_5199c.jpg
I seriously am following the directions exactly as written, I don't know why mine looks different!

chloeishere
November 17th, 2008, 05:37 PM
Okay, after videotaping myself, and then watching your video, I think I see the difference.
There's a couple, actually.

Your directions:

Hold your hair in a pony
Place single stick under pony parallel to the floor with the "top" in your right hand
Pull pony down over stick, then up and behind the end of the stick
Rotate stick clockwise until "top" is on the left of your head
Stab stick through hair and push end through to the left of your head (don't make it too tight)
Bring the tail of the pony down behind the end of the stick and stab stick through (without rotating) to your right side
Top should be sticking out the left of the bun
Tuck ends of hair into the crevice

For my variation:

Hold your hair in a pony
Place single stick under pony parallel to the floor with the "top" in your LEFT hand
Pull pony down over stick, then up and behind the end of the stick
Rotate stick COUNTER-clockwise until "top" is on the left of your head (In manderly's version, you rotate the stick in order to make the twist LOOSER. In this version, you rotate in the direction that makes the loop/ twist TIGHTER. This is just about the only difference).
Stab stick through hair and push end through to the left of your head (don't make it too tight)
Bring the tail of the pony down behind the end of the stick and stab stick through (without rotating) to your right side
There's no crevice for ends in my version. :D

This is what the original version is supposed to look like, right? (this is super loosely done, mind)
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k152/chloeishere/IMG_5204c.jpg

It is suprisingly stable for such a loose style!

Odile, it's just a cheap plastic (a set) from Claire's or Icing or something :D I wanted one I could use with wet hair and one I wouldn't mind losing/breaking.

Post pics when you get it! I'd love to see how it turns out. It seems to be slightly different on everyone.

MountainGypsy, I have long layers too, mine are pretty grown out though, but you should give it a try :)

Manderly, I am going to spin the other style off into a new thread, but you are getting some credit for the bun-- the movements are so similar (really, you just skip a few steps), and I never would have stumbled across it on my own. I have a video and several pictures. I'm calling it the Magic Knot bun, based on what you called it. :D

I can't do it!!!!!!!! I have tried several times, and I can't find the crevice to tuck my hair into. It's waist-ish length, and every time I try, I have a tail at the left side hanging down.

So this last time I just wrapped the tail 'round the bun and left it there. Here is a pic. 'Scuse the bright flash.

I've just tried this (the 'long hair' variant) and I love it! I really like wrapped buns because they don't compress fine hair as much as twisted buns, and this one is so elegant. I wish I had your skills at designing hairstyles - thanks for sharing them with the rest of us! :flowers:

I can't do it. And I have tried maderly's way and the long hair mod and everything.

Does it depend on thickness? I had to bust out the 9 inch knitting needles. Which helps with the holding of all the hair, but I fail when I have to stab the needle back through.

I really like it.

i'm having a hair fail day.

manderly
July 13th, 2009, 04:38 PM
Aw, sorry fae. Is the problem that it's too tight to do the second stab?

If so wrap your hair with some slack to it so it almost feels too loose, then you should be able to manage the second stab.

HTH :flower:

P.S. And it's not just you, if you read the thread lots of people have a hard time with this one, even me on occasion. It's a persnickity bun.
