View Full Version : Plantation brand Blackstrap molasses as hair mask?

Hello all,

I'd used this Molasses as a hair mask before and it actually darkened my ash blond hair in the meanwhile, (temporarily.) I also remember it seemed stronger then and it was just before I let my hair do a multi year grow out after some damage.

Now I am a henna head, (I should post this there maybe...) and wonder if anyone here has used this as a mask too.

A friend of mine with thick dark hair tried it as well and while her hair is thick, mine is thin, hers is raven black, my was ash blonde... we both thought we liked it. However, now that I am a henna head, I wonder if it is going to mess up my new regimen. Although, I truly can do a hair strand test off of my sheds.. plenty of those on the brush.

Anyone else tried it?
Thank you,
Jen
p.s. I also used a tablespoon supplement of it daily too and thought it may have helped the hair, I could try that again. It has about 18% of the daily iron requirement in an easily absorbable, non side effect manner.
p.p.s. here is a link to a recipe but, we just used it straight and covered it with a plastic bag, then towel to hold heat, then showered it off after a half an hour or so. I guess if I waited longer it may have added darker, (again, the darkened color diminished after subsequent washings.) https://www.askdebbieabouthair.com/molasses-secret-weapon-healthy-hair/

I've been using this exact brand in a pseudo SMT lately and it's been great. My hair is already dark but I haven't noticed any darkening of my lighter ends yet. It's been feeling very soft since I've been doing these treatments.

Thank you for replying. I'd just remembered today that after using this as a daily spoonful for about 6 months-a year, my major shed-break episode subsided. I'm going to return to it but, for now, just a spoonful a day and not the mask, (due to henna not liking minerals apparently from what I read online.)

Here is another decent sounding hair mask recipe at the end of this article.
Thank you for reading and commenting.

Thank you also for mentioning SMT! I just read the other thread with the recipe and will likely make a pseudo one too, adding Blackstrap un-sulphurated molasses. I'm really glad to know all the minerals in the molasses does not conflict with the henna, my hair really liked the molasses. I also can hardly believe I used it straight. Sure it smelled great washing down the drain in the shower, sort of like a cookie shop!

After reading the above, I decided to replace my usual 1Tblsp of honey with Plantation brand Blackstrap Molasses. The unsulphered kind. I'll do my mud overnight and wash out tomorrow AM. I'll make a report and let y'all know how I like it...
Oh, yeah - reason for the(very small) experiment is to see if it will darken my hair slightly while giving the moisture I like from the honey...
Darken isn't really what I mean. More like limiting brassiness,I think.
I have forgotten to say- the 1Tblsp is in a henna/ Cassia mix:
9 Tblsp Cassia
1 Tblsp Henna
4 Tblsp Amla
1 Tblsp Methi
1Tblsp Kapoor Kachli
1 Tblsp Maka
1Tblsp Aloe Vera

Maybe one or two herbs I forgot; but I'm sure you know the basic drill!!

Bah! Apparently my follow up post didn't... post.

Basically: I had marginal results, but I did three things differently, and don't know WHAT was actually acting on my hair! I used closer to 4TBS of Amla(2 is my usual amount), and I added about 2TBS of a Shimmer Lights knockoff purple conditioner, as well as the molasses. So I just can't be sure...

P.S. I DID have someone spontaneously tell me my hair looked darker!

Thank you for this.

I agree that it might be the lights knockoff conditioner offering the anti-brassiness results and suspect the softer and darker could be from the molasses, (although the darker is usually temporary.)
