View Full Version : June 2019: Comet Knot

The Comet Knot is part knot bun, party ponytail. AKA Valkyire.

The basic instructions are: Gather a ponytail, tie a knot in the whole thing against the scalp with the length pulled through, secure.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHpDtSO9gtQ

In principal, this is a means of making not only a shorter ponytail (useful for longer lengths), but of securing one without the use of elastics (should you eschew such). In practice a simple knot may not provide enough stability.

Alternative ponytail bun construction methods, should the original Comet Knot not work for you:

Is this the same as the valkyrie one?
I should get a picture; I do this a lot these days.

Sound like the same.

I tried it last summer and I used a hair stick to secure it.

This is the only way I can do a high ponytail without it sagging, but I have to use hairpins on the bun part... there's no way it would stay up if I just didn't use anything.

ETA: Oh, now the video shows up for me. Okay, mine is slightly different, because I don't just tie a knot, I do twist it into one loop of a bun, and then pull the rest through the middle. I'll have to try it this way.

It's still discouraging to me, though, because the thickest part of my hair is then in the knot/bun and the part hanging in a ponytail looks thin.

(I like that treble-clef bun, though. I played around with it a bit. I don't like leaving the ends out so I'll make sure they're in, but it could be an easier way to make a bun with longer hair rather than wrapping it around and around and around to use up all the length... then I have to try really hard to not let it bee-butt. This way is only one wrap; could be nifty if I can practice and make it not-messy.)

Took these in the setting sun this evening. Hair is messy because it's brushed out braid waves. I'm not sure that it's a style I would wear out and about much. I remember the first time I tried this style the "tail" was about three inches long - it looked so silly!

I was worried my hair wasn't long enough to accomplis this. Apparently, I can do it although I don't have a lot of length hanging out the pony tail. Using a hair stick makes it feel very secure.

Saunda, I have very slippery hair.
I don't know how long this will last. Usually the knot starts to slip and it pulls and I have to re-do it.

Yes, one I can easily participate in! I do various comet buns all the time lately, including a comet knot bun. I'll have to see if I can get a picture to post.

I imagine I will have the same issue I have with my version-- in mine, the bun starts to loosen, rotates, and then I get the sag and sometimes it also turns so that my hairpins are digging into my head. This will probably do something similar... (I don't know that my hair is considered "slippery," but it's the same effect.)

So after my success yesterday I've been unable to do the comet knot. Looks like I need a little more length.

I did it with a cinnamon bun while I was at home lounging but I don't like the taper of my ponytail lol. Although in today's fashion my ponytail would look great if backcombed, curled and texturised but then I don't do these things. :P maybe I will post a pic tomorrow with all 3 cinnamon, lwb and knot versions

I didn't even bother; my slick hair sometimes doesn't even stay up with sturdy 5-prong forks. You might want to use a few zillion pins, that's what I'd try if it were important to have some measure of success.

I tried this the other week. Issue I ran into: if the "loop" was big enough for me to pull my hand back through, I had trouble tightening the knot as the knot itself would tighten to its max before I got it up against my head. I had to try to put as few fingers through as possible as could still grip the hair to pull it through (and leave as small of an opening as possible that the hair would still fit through) and then tighten very carefully. The other problem is that care must be taken in orientation of the knot-- if the part where your hair comes through is at the top rather than the bottom, you get a weird "waterfall" effect of hair cascading over the hidden knot, rather than a visible knot with the hair coming out of it.

Yeah,it took me about 10-15 minutes and several tries before I got one that didn't necessarily look good, it just iddn't look ridiculous! This is going to take way more practice than I expected (it was not something to attempt for the first time while just running to the bathroom at work quickly!).

Once I got it in, I liked it okay. Easy to secure with a couple hairsticks.

Thanks expecto, kept it in for about 5 minutes then wanted my bun back haha. Yeah Kat, I ran into the same issues with tightness and angles. I think it was a combination of luck and fluke that got it on like the 6 th try.

Lovely knots ladies, I really enjoyed scrolling through this thread.

I tried this today and mine looked like a floppier version of yours, Tinyponies. :) I couldn't get the knot to sit nice and tight against my scalp. Also, because of how tapered my lengths are, the knot to tail ratio didn't look very nice on me. I think I'll have to wait a year or two before I attempt this one again.

Heh, I remembered to do this style in the morning, actually the braided version, where the knot is braided and then the tail is not. Great for using my smallest fork. I was going to take a picture but was busy and didn’t have the patience for the long thin tail hanging down so I wrapped it up around the knot and totally forgot about it. Probably no chance for a picture today.

Ooh, this sounds cool! How do you do it? Just with a braid and then unbraid the tail?

Yep! I made a guess at how much length the knot would eat and braided a little past that, then unbraided after securing the knot. Held great all day.

I tried this but didn't take a picture because at my length, I just had a bun with some unattractive hairy bits coming out of the middle. ;) I secured it with a chopstick; it still slipped right down my head in about an hour.

Slightly late but I adore this hairstyle! Itís actually my go to bun most days, except I add in a twist as though making a nautilus. It holds great all day high up on the head and the ends can be easily twisted up to make a bun.

I’ve been enjoying wearing my hair in a pony tail again with this one. It’s been a long time since a hair elastic could hold the weight of my hair in a high pony tail. This style almost has a faux short hair sort of feel for me.

I tried this and didn't think it would work it all. It totally did. My hair only comes out about three or four inches and it's not cute, but a half up bun like this, secured with a hair pin, was totally cute and held. And when I wrapped my ends back and hid them in the full bun, then it looked elegant...until the hair started popping out. No pic though, sorry.

My hair is too short for this, but today I wore double comet knots instead of high pigtails or double side buns, and I was really happy. The tail wasn't long, but decent enough, and I occasionally felt the ends touch my shoulders, and the ends were curled too, so I thought it looked nice, especially with my bangs, which had a very interesting curl pattern and side part (ok, I woke up with this crazy bangs style and it worked so well the whole day). I secured each with a spin pin with a huge pearl. But I was too lazy to take pics.

Anyway, this held the whole day and I was so happy with my hair.

I think my hair is too thick for this style or something...My hair length is almost to my lower back. I could barely get it in a knot due to thickness and then only about 6 inches was hanging out so that didn't look very cute. So I tried it in a half up hairstyle and it actually looked awesome. Happy to have learned a new style! Thanks for sharing!
Id like my hair to be as long as TatsuOni

Well, I finally got it, and it's holding well with a fork. Unfortunately, it doesn't look that great. If I manage to get a pretty version I'll add a pic.

It looks so easy! Also very pretty on the pics here.

Does thickness affect this style? And/or does hair need to be really long for it? My hair is between waist and hip, closer to hip, and when I try this I have MAYBE 3 inches of hair sticking out for the ponytail. Also, the only way I can get a tail is by wrapping around 2 or 3 fingers rather than the whole hand, which makes it much harder for me to pull the tail through. My hair is also slippery and it's hard to get it to stay in the knot long enough to stab it with a fork.

Any tips? I like the idea of this style!

So funny story, what I was trying WAS the Lazy Wrap ponytail! I just tried the actual comet knot and it's definitely much more difficult for me.
