Hey! I was thinking about the relationship between hair thickness (i-iii), frequency of detangling, and the amount of hair you get each time you detangle.

Share it here as a little project to compare and get an idea of what's normal and what's not!

I wet detangle 2x a week during washes.

Here's what I get each time I detangle. The drain hole is about 5 cm in diameter:

What about you guys? :)

Wow!
I detangle once a day and usually get like 5-10 hairs.
I'm interested to see what others have to say. Good idea for a thread!

Cool idea for a thread, some people may think a thread full of hairballs is weird or gross but I'm down for it
I normally detangle once a day but if I'm lazy or feeling a little down I will let it go a few days. Never longer than 3 days though. I usually start with finger combing, followed up with wide tooth wood comb lately but also the tangle teaser on dry hair. I detangle during a wash too with conditioner on, sometimes finger detangling is sufficient but I have a wide tooth plastic comb and a wet brush that I swap out interchangeably.

First 2 pics are the same hair ball after a full day in a bun, first one loose, second balled up tight. I counted 49 which is normal. I used to get 80-120 when having my post partum shed which has finally stopped just recently WOO!

This one is my hair collection I keep in a sandwich bag under the bathroom sink to scare my BF when he goes looking in there HAHA. This is a few months worth, not everyday just when I remember. I had planned to use it as a hair rat but never have. Or if I ever lose my mind and want to dye I can use it for stand testing.

Love it, I’ll be back soon with mine.

Milosmomma your amounts look very similar to mine (maybe a bit less). And I’ve wanted to see your hair rat under the sink! I’m travelling right now so away from the mother rat but I have a baby in a bag I can share !! Oh all this sounds as if it would be very confusing out of context!

A request - for those that add to the thread, would you mind stating your thickness and length in posts for mobile users pretty please?

Tinyponies, love your new avatar!

MilosMommy I save my hair too! I don't want it to go down the drain so I keep an old masque container in my shower and gather them.

Here's my pic of a year's worth and I dry detangle my fine 4 inch thickness almost BSL hair daily.

I dry detangled today and only shed 1 hair so I didn't take a pic. Since I've been dry detangling I lose between 1 and 5 (usually about 3 to 4) hairs daily and when I wash - every 3rd or 4th day I lose about 5 or less in the shower.

I dry detangle gently daily with fingers only - way, way, way less shed.

My niece who was visiting found my hair ball container and was grossed out. I said, hey I'm trying to make a bounceable hair ball over here, don't judge me, hahahaha!!

Tinyponies, I would say that is a "light" hairball. It is usually slightly more and then at that specific time of month I shed loads more during that cycle as well. Well I'm glad you've met my sink hairball and I look forward to seeing yours!(HAHA yea this is a weird thread, but its great)
My hair thickness is ii, I want to say 3.75 last time i measure which has to be well over 9 months ago and is probably less now. I would like to remeasure once my shed regrowth reaches the ponytail.
Desisparkles that is hilarious about your niece, she might start secretly collecting her own hair now! That year long worth of hair is pretty epic. My big rat looks about the same size, but I dont think it's as tightly round up as yours. (Am I getting hairball envy?)

My hair acts strange.
At the moment I shed 1-5 hairs a day.
But then, regularly like every 2 years, I get a HUGE shed where I lose up to 500 hairs per day. Then I usually cut my hair short (that was one of the reasons for the chop in November) and keep it short until it stops shedding. Then I start growing it out again. That's where I am now. Yesterday it was 5 hairs, today 3.
I dont understand this strange no shedding-huge shedding cycle but it was always like this. Since puberty.

I brush my hair out every three days when I wash it (shampoo and conditioner):

This is what I collected from my brush after today’s wash.

Edit: Finally figured out how to upload properly!

Wash once a week and try to detangle at least daily. First photo is of day 1 and 2 post wash because I don't shed the day of washing. Last photo is right out of the shower with three detangle sessions.

A not wash day, I remove sheds daily and the amount does vary.
Almost waist, with 3 inch diameter.

I lose 3 handfuls each wash day. So what I have seen so far is quite minimal. My circ. is iii, but say Sunday & Monday evening (after the wash), I don't lose hair (maybe 1/2 hairs), then as of Tuesday, bits start to come off more and more as the week goes on and I finger detangle. And then Sunday pre-wash I fully detangle and yeah, that's quite a bit then. Then during the wash about as much comes out, and then after the towel when I detangle wet before styling another hand full comes out.

A thread that may be worth reviving. :)

I have – I think – iii hair, medium but somewhat thicker thanks to henna, somewhere between collarbone and APL now. I mostly wore it up (but not 24/7) and this might be about 2-3 days worth of hair (besides what fell out naturally), after thorough finger combing!

I will admit that i actually Never detangle my hair. I usually lose about 50 of them all at once on wash days though... the rest of the days i don't really count how much i lose. I only wear my hair down to sleep so i believe my biggest "shed" happens during the washing process.

I detangle my hair at least once a day, usually first thing in the morning but also often before I go to bed. I use a Mason Pearson brush as it detangles better than anything I’ve ever used in my life and I’m 60. Once it’s detangled in the morning a wet my hands and add a drop of curly conditioner and plop it in my ends so they re-curl then braid it.

The amount of hair I lose is about 100 hairs a day which I read is average. When I wash my hair I lose more but according to professionals, we lose ten times more hair when we wash it. With the amount of hair I do lose, it’s surprising I have so much left on my head ‘cause my vacuum is filled with it and my drains often get clogged with massive amounts of it. It’s actually really gross too.

I don't think the amount of hair I shed would even show up on a picture because it's so close to the colour of my hand. I get roughly 12-20-ish, give or take, and brush every day. I don't really count it though.

Pre-wash detangling, two days after the last wash. This is my usual amount of shedding before a wash.

I only brush my hair before washing. Here I was on day 4. I think it was a lot more tbh, and in some months (between september and january) I'm sure I lost more hair.

OMG that is so minimal, to me that would be the tiniest amount! I have "grades" in my shedding: tiniest, tiny, small, normal, and large / a lot. ;)

That is really so little hair to lose; something to rejoice over! :cheer:

I was surprised. I'll pay attention the next time to see if it was just a case or not.
