View Full Version : Hair Pin Recommendations

I'm looking for hair pin recommendations since the ones I have just slip out of my hair. I am looking for straight or slightly crinkled ones that hold well even with slippery hair. It is preferred if they come in black or brown or a reddish tone but I won't turn down any colour. And not too long.
No actual bobby pins, please! Those are too hard to use for me.
This is the kind I have now: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AQF921W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
If anyone uses those, and can make it work, please let me know your secret!

I have the similar Soft n Style ones in the 3inches length. I use them for braided cinnamon buns, fake crown braids, pinning ends in place etc.
For braided cinnamon buns I place them spaced a few inches apart as I coil, such that their ends overlap and that the first few are pretty much crossed.
I insert them by holding them at a right angle to whatever I'm pinning grabbing some of the hair to be pinned down then some scalp hair I want to pin it to, rotating the pin so that the ends face inwards (for buns) and use a weaving motion to grab scalp and and nonscalp hair as I push them in.

My reply is basically the same as HaMalka's. I have really cheap crinkled pins that look like yours. They do still occasionally jump out of my hair, but the weaving or sewing motion usually keeps them in for a decent amount of time. Lately I also use Good Hair Days pins that look like U pins. They also don't stay forever, but the headcurve on them helps lock them into place.

I have some Amish pins that I haven't managed to get stable/secure so I'm also interested in any further replies (hate bobby pins, *so* much!)

I have some 3 inchers from a store on Amazon called mennonite maidens. They're amish type with the crinkles, they come in black or bronze(maybe silver, I have black)and 3 or 2.5 inch lengths. A 10 pack was 4$ I believe, on mobile so I will double check the listing later for you if interested. I need about 3, or sometimes 2 will work for a cinnabun. They hold well while upright but if I try to use them for a sleep bun they usually wiggle loose :)

I swear by spin pins. Three of them hold a bun all day with no slippage.

These pins (https://www.goodhairdays.com/subcategory/Hairpins/Magic-Grip--Hairpins) are the only kinds that I can count on staying in.

I have the 2.5" crinkled U pins and they hold my slippery fine wispy hair great!

:agree: I love these too!

I bought those years ago and fought with them; they popped out and broke on me
They seemed bulky in my fine hair, yet your stats show your hair is more fine than mine...so maybe the length of yours is key? :hmm:

That is funny to hear, especially at your length, because I bought those years ago and fought with them; they popped out and broke on me
Not sure what I did wrong; although they seemed bulky in my fine hair so perhaps it was the texture of both :hmm:
You're right, I don't use them any more. When my hair was shorter, I had to use a lot of them but they did stay.

I found messing with hairpins and bobby pins gave me too much pain. When I do wear my hair up, I am using a large claw clip and several smaller claw clips, and people tell me I look like Frieda Kahlo. I had not planned this hairstyle, but the compliments I get on it really makes me go to it again and again. The problem for me with wearing my hair up is I cannot do it in a bun, or I get severe headaches, but I find distributing the weight of my hair around my head prevents this.

Oh gosh no. Those never worked for me. My hair (even the "real" Amish pins) would spit them right out.
I just waited and waited... and waited (LOL) until a fork held my bun totally. And it was worth it.

Thanks, everyone :)
I'll attempt the weaving method to see if I get any good results with those.
BerrySara, thanks for the link; I'll take a look through it.
MusicalSpoons, despite my best efforts, I simply cannot make bobby pins not pull on my hair.
milosmomma, Cg, GG: thank you for that recommendations, and reviews :); they're definitely going on the list of hair things to buy/try.
Entangled, I use spin pins very often but they do not work in all situations for me. I want to use these for braid tassles/ends, and potentially for giving my front a bit of a puff so my buns do not pull as much. Spin pins are not great for that.
LongHairCalif, I use claw clips often but this would be for styles that require pins. I could probably make it work with tiny claw clips but I do not really like that look, and my braid ends often slip out of them.
Lapushka, I hope I find something that works! But right now my hair is definitely just spitting them straight back out.

Yikes that's no fun! :(
Maybe try a different bun or style? See what that does.

Good Hair Days Magic Grip hair pins work great for me, and they come in different colors. They're plastic, but I don't think I've ever broken one. They're on Amazon....

I use these as well, pretty much exclusively (though I have some of the small metal ones similar to OP's Amazon link that work well for holding in the little bits that want to pop out; they're for securing bits of hair, not structurally holding a style; I think they're too flimsy for that).
I also have the Bunheads pins: https://www.capezio.com/hairpins
I don't think they would work very well for thin hair, though. You can't tell by the picture but the end is wide and square-ish, not narrow and rounded, so you almost have to use them like a hairpin or hair fork, not the way I usually use my Magic Grip pins (catch a bit of bun hair and a bit of scalp hair). The one time I tried them that way for ballet class, I'm sure you can guess what happened when we got to center work and saute jumps...

I once again might just have to start wearing my hair down in a single braid because the claw clips and even pins hurt my head. I like putting my hair up some mornings if I am running out of time to brush it, but I noticed more hair comes out when I wear it up. Also, I have never got over the headaches of wearing my hair up, and the only thing that avoids that is hallo braids. Even then, I guess I have to go back to wearing my hair down in a single braid behind my back.

I think that when your hair is up all day that it only seems like more hair falls when you detangle. All your sheds are trapped until you take it down where as when you have it loose, the sheds can escape through out the day.

I never found a tutorial on how to use this kind of pins. I am clueless, sorry. any tutorial, even with short hair is welcomed. I never saw these type of hairpins in a youtube video.
