View Full Version : Keratin treatment at home?

Hey guys💖

I just got a keratin treatment done a few days ago at a hair salon. I’m very happy with the results, but the whole process at the salon was a bit terrifying as the hair dresser kept ripping my hair while combing it and also pulling out my hair when straightening it (even tho I asked her several times to please be gentle).
I’m trying to comfort myself by telling myself that my hair is strong enough to handle being treated like that once, but if I’d want to do the treatment again I do not want to let anyone else do it on me, cause I’m sure I’ll have a lot of hair pulled out and lots of breakage. So I thought I could do it myself. Has anyone else done this with success? And where do you get your products? I saw on the website of the brand they use, that you’d have to be a hair dresser to purchase from them and they need you to upload proof that you are.
The product they used on me is called Honma Tokyo and it’s free from formaldehyde, which is important to me. So if anyone knows where I could get a hold of this brand or other good brands free from formaldehyde, please let me know.
I saw that it’s possible to order from eBay and some websites I’m not familiar with, but I’m afraid the products might not be authentic..

I know there are a few people on here who do this at home, but I'm not sure they're on right now.

I'm bumping this thread hoping it gets seen! :flower:

Try looking at the big keratin straightening thread on here:

Maybe there's hints and tips in there.

I was just coming to link that! :D Yes read through that thread if you have the time. I follow the method MINAKO documents pretty extensively in there. I'm at work so I don't have much time right now but pretty much for me it's 1) clarify and chelate the night before 2) air dry 3) apply the product and cover with plastic to keep wet for about 45 min 4) gently blow dry until very dry 5) straighten with flat iron in very small sections. I keep the heat at 320 - 390F depending on different areas of my hair. I'm not sure if it is still available as I bought it in 2016 but I got the 2 large bottles of Goldwell Kerasilk off amazon from the Goldwell sellers. They were very nice and it was the real product. Goldwell Kerasilk is one of the formaldehyde free formulas.

There is a Goldwell thread as well, linking it:

I bought these ones, although I got the intense smooth and shape which don't seem to be available right now. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IZ0G4UW/ref=ppx_yo_b_widget_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

I'm not sure if they changed the formula at all but these appear to be the newer bottles: https://www.amazon.com/Goldwell-Kerasilk-Control-Keratin-Intense/dp/B01AQ5FT4K/ref=pd_cp_194_1?pd_rd_w=RqXVg&pf_rd_p=ef4dc990-a9ca-4945-ae0b-f8d549198ed6&pf_rd_r=8HZWF6SGX83Q2KDPJJAT&pd_rd_r=51745d04-5517-11e9-93b6-334f58262223&pd_rd_wg=d4XAD&pd_rd_i=B01AQ5FT4K&refRID=8HZWF6SGX83Q2KDPJJAT&th=1

Like I said though, I have only bought the older bottles.

Water and moisture can cause some of the hair protein treatments to be lost. It can not only make hair frizzy and frizzy but can also leave marks in the hair. Avoid washing your hair for at least three days after the treatment; Also say no to swimming and intense physical activity because you don't want to sweat.

Wear your hair down and straight for the first few days after treatment or as long as you can. Since keratin is initially flexible, braiding or braiding hair into a ponytail or bun can leave behind dents. After about three days, you can use a soft hair tie to tie your hair. However, do not braid your hair for a long time.

Sleep on silk pillowcases or pillows because cotton or other materials can cause friction while sleeping, causing frizz and rendering your keratin treatment (https://www.femina.in/beauty/hair/keratin-hair-treatment-all-you-need-to-know-120691.html) short-lived.

Use hair care products that are free of strong detergents, such as sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate. These detergents strip hair of natural oils and keratin, making your treatment wear out sooner than expected.

Something else to look for when choosing an at home keratin treatment products is if formaldehyde is produced when heat is added. Hairdresser friends have always said to avoid inhaling just in case.
