This is a thread for "celebrating" and embracing your own texture.
Show us up close what its intricacies are.

Here's my texture, one day after a wash:

https://i.imgur.com/DDgBpwjm.jpg https://i.imgur.com/I36U9cnm.jpg

Two days post wash:

https://i.imgur.com/odclYLAm.jpg

Ignore the frizz (it's always happening, no matter what leave-in or curl definer / gel / serum I use).

Now show us yours!

What lovely wurls, Lapushka :crush:

I don’t have any pix to add at the moment as I need to co-wash out a mistake literally as soon as I’ve finished my coffee, but there should be some inadvertent close ups of one or two of my various textures in the album linked in my signature. I tend to take pix over my shoulder and my phone always wants to focus on my shoulder even if I try to adjust the focus.

AmaryllisRed, cute crinkle. Hah! :) I get this on the underneath, just one hair, but it's a bit more textured, more zig-zaggy.

Ooh this is a good thread idea! I keep wanting to document my various hairs for apparently type 1 - the majority are fairly straight or a bit bendy, but a not-tiny minority are curly, wurly, and/or crinkly

Edit: in my excitement, I forgot to say I'm really enjoying the contributions so far :D

I do. As you can probably see in my wurly picture, there are a few strands hanging almost perfectly straight and others forming loose ringlets.

Wow, you've definitely got some variety AmaryllisRed. Most of my variety comes from straight bits from heat damage. I have bunches of loose curls and waves, and then bunches of teeny tiny springs, but it's really not that noticeable since they all just congregate anyway :O

Thank you lapushka! oh yea I definitely get frizz past day 1 curls. Unless I re-wet it and apply more curling cream - which I never bother unless I am going out. Honestly though I love me a little frizz because it typically means a lot more volume. Day 1 curls are defined and pretty but more stuck together and to my head. Day 3 curls are probably my favorite - good balance between frizz and volume!

Gorgeous curls, BerrySara! And nice to see that I'm not the only one with a little frizz. ;)

Just on a side note, since I started dealing with mine, I couldn't help but look for it on people outside. It is after winter, but pretty much everyone I meet has either some frizz, tons of flyaways, or both. Some of it may be damage and/or dryness, but I imagine the majority is just hair being hair. Makes you wonder where the push for silky smooth hair comes from! (Probably from companies that make money off the products.)

By the way, great thread idea. c: And your curls/waves have really cute shapes.

There’s an awful lot of them in about the first 5 inches and they’re not getting particularly worse, so really I’m happy to leave them be until I get to a length I’d like to maintain at, or tangles from them become a problem.

Lovely hair, Yeahnah, and welcome to the forum! :flowers:

My hair's a little tied up right now so I've only got a bit of the ends out. These ends are mostly from the back and side sections of my hair. To compare to the bottom picture, these curls are just a teeny bit bigger than pencil-width.

This is after I chopped *all* my heat damage in 2015(?). I don't miss this length! This is the best shot I've got of the texture on the top of my head. It's very different and loose, hangs more in waves now instead of the bigs curls I see in this picture.

I've been here over 10 years, cut back to chin multiple times, so I can't say how long it took me; I really didn't pay attention, but I think it's safe to say 1 year per milestone.

Thanks lapushka. I’m blown away by how much my ends have improved just by following yours and others good advice. I think I’ll make a post about it in October, when I’ll have been hanging around here for a year. :)

I had several curly perms in my life because I found it easier to care for than my own texture, and it was about 3b/3c curls with that perm. The hairdresser always had her hands full because she turned it into an 80s mess each time, the floof, everything. I always had to re-wet my hair after that perming salon visit to get it to go back into a nice "cast". And of course the n° of people on the way home having a good laugh = priceless. Grrrr. :(

I used to want a curly perm so bad but never did one, my mother did them on me as a child but never had it as an adult or of an age where I took care of my own hair. I probably never will now oh well

I had a curly perm when I was about seven or eight years old. I've got a picture, and it must have been taken shortly after the perm because neither my mom nor myself had any idea how to care for that texture. I can still hear the sound of the brush ripping through those curls. *shudder*

My hair is weird. It is definitely wavy/curly, it starts to form S and spiral shaped curls instantly when it gets wet but if I don't use products to seal the moisture in, it straightens into that dry chunk of hair. I think it has something to do with low porosity. I call my hair 2C because that's what it normally is, though it can be anything between 2A to 3A depending on how well I take care of it.

I feel like your hair is similar to mine? The conditioner-free version is very familiar, mine also doesn't get basically any definition without help, but then it gets wavy-to-curly, it's always very wavy when wet, and sometimes I find a double, interlocked curl too. Except, your hair is absolutely gorgeous after styling and mine is always a mess.

EDIT: I searched because your name was familiar and you did, in fact, write in my dry hair thread that you consider our hair similar, too.
You give me hope that my hair might not be doomed. c:

I'm constantly taking pictures of my best spiral curls, so my phone is full of them! Here's a representative picture of my texture though, which is a mix of anything from 2a to 2c:

https://i.imgur.com/uofMWC8l.jpg

This could be a hairtyping pic actually - it's airdried, not manipulated, and I didn't use any leave-ins or products (I never do, haven't figured out what I need). So much frizz and unruliness...

ETA: I identify with the 2d label: even my "2a" strands are actually elongated spirals, not S waves. It's kind of visible in this picture.

Wow that's impressive.... it's like your hair has a split personality haha!

Split personality, that's exactly how it feels!

Wow absolutely stunning!

This makes me want to try out Gel on My own hair to see what it would do to my texture.

Thank you, it was definitely worth sharing the pictures if I can inspire someone to try new things. :)

You give me hope that my hair might not be doomed. c:

Your hair looks curlier than mine but the dryness and texture is similar. There's actually nothing wrong having dry and messy hair, it's naturally the way it is but usually people prefer shiny hair and defined curls/waves, dry hairs is considered bad and something that should be fixed. I've been told to cut my hair because it's so dry. But yeah, I prefer frizz-free shiny curls too but it's nice to see natural frizzy hair too.

This is exactly why I'm so glad you shared the photos! & why my viewpoint quickly changed after seeing the hair journeys of other people online. Just like with anything that big companies profit from, the natural state is considered "bad" and you rarely get to see it. I used to think something must be really wrong with my hair and I did not quite know it's curly because the curly hair seen in media was so different.
Anyways, I was hoping to ask!, did you write about your hair routine somewhere? And if no, would you be willing to share it? :0

Those "anomalies" are pretty much normal; just thought I'd stress that in case anyone panics over it (don't).

Neat to see, though. Wish I could find that rogue hair of mine in the back of my head, but it's just one hair amid a whole heap of it; it grows around a mole and might even have shed back out a while ago. It is thick, zigzags in tiny zigs & zags, and is pitch black.

Oh yes, they definitely are! I had a bright copper 3a hair at one point, amidst my chestnut 2 waves. It was fun looking for it when I finger combed.

My hair is a lot wavier than it looks in most of the pictures I post here. I tend to lose a lot of my texture when I finger detangle after a wash & comb it at night. The bottom layer of my hair, especially towards the roots, tends to stay wavier than the rest of my hair though, so you can see more of my natural texture better there.

Such a fun thread! I looked at all textures and honestly they look all gorgeous! Here's my contribution but I have to say that this is after washing with sulfates and conditioning with silicones for the first time since a looong while, this usually makes my hair way straighter than it really is. Upper and bottom layer are always different.

Tried to make these photos smaller but didnt really work the way I wanted it haha!

I'll definitely update another time when my hair acts differently and more wavy as I know it is capable of doing so as you can see in the picture below when I had shorter hair and also treated it differentely (just don't really remember how, probably a bit of CG and also using a lot of amla in my hair).
My hair is changeable like that and pretty sensitive to the type of water and the way I treat it, but scalp and hair like different things!

I follow this thread already, and I'm going to upload my photos soon. But I would like to ask something first.

My virgin hair belongs to range 1a-1c. Mostly belongs to 1a/1b.
Dyed parts of my hair are frizzy, and I have an impression that some of them go up to 2b, but not always and not the same strands and not the same way of waviness. I don't know exactly what makes a hair to perform a different texture form day to day. My explanation is that dyed hair is more unpredictable and is less or more damaged, so it's behaviour depends more on shampoo, conditioner, comb... But I would like to hear your opinion.

From your experience, has your virgin hair texture often changed, out of no reason?
If you are dyeing your hair, do you notice unpredictable texture from time to time?
Is now your virgin hair's texture different (how?) then in time when you used to dye your hair?
How hairdryer influences the change in texture? Is the influence of heat and brush bigger then influence of dye, bleach...?

I have small amount of highlights now but my hair was dead straight when it was dyed. Now it has more body volume and even some actual waviness (nape hair and front hair after washing, they straighten out after my hair dries though). That never happened before. It's very unpredictable though, sometimes it's just straight and sometimes there's little waves. It probably mostly depends on the products I use now, if there's any trace of waviness or not.
Hair dye and heat damage from flatiron had more influence in my hair texture and quality than occasional blow-drying and brushing but I admit I never did much actual styling with blow-dryer.

This is an interesting topic! I believe it's pretty common for hair texture to change over time. I know some people had (mostly) straight hair when it was color and/or heat processed but turned out wavy or even curly once they went natural. Hormones can affect your texture too.

Agava
May 9th, 2019, 05:25 AM
Ok, thanks for answering. I also heard a lot of people's experiences that regular dyeing made their hair straighter then it was. I have impression that with me is opposite. That's why am I confused. I have a feeling that my natural hair doesn't tend to form waves at all, but maybe I should wait at least one year to see my hair's texture clearly.

Begemot
May 9th, 2019, 05:43 AM
Agreed, it's better to wait and see. I do think I have heard more stories about going straight to wavy/curly but going from wavy/curly to straight shouldn't be impossible at all :)

Here is my hair. On the first and second picture, hair is dried naturally and combed and I have small amount of spray on my bangs. I have no idea to which type my hair belongs, it's undefined due to frizzy hair. On the third photo I have some shine spray based on oil that helps with settling frizzy hair and defining texture.
Btw, would you classify my hair as 1b or 1c?

Begemot

Very pretty Agave, though we can't hairtype on combed hair - it has to be washed then airdried untouched (well, after you've maybe had it in a towel; you don't have to drip everywhere ) but no styling, which covers things like combing, scrunching, etc. Even fingercombing breaks up clumps to give an inaccurate picture :)

Edit: I keep reading this thread and seeing people's pics but rarely commenting. Everyone has contributed awesome pics! I love seeing them all.

Thanks! I'm surprised that my hair became so wavy lately. I'm kind of curious to know how my virgin hair is going to behave in next period, because I remember myself having straight hair not so long ago.

Lapushka, thank you for your response, too. I also think I'm now between 1b/c. I'm going to put a picture of untouched hair next time. I count on your help with categorising :)

Yep, I understand :D I myself have tons of frizz, always thought my hair was straight, then after a couple of years of better care it turns out to have discernible waves in places  But based on what you've shown us, that looks like a distinct body wave despite having been combed so you'd definitely be at least 1c. With more length and more virgin hair, who knows?! ;)

I'll wash my hair later, I can't wait to see.
I had straightish (1b) hair even in period when it was long, and not often dyed. And in that time i didn't use a hairdryer nor brush. The only what I did was combing it a lot while air drying to get 1a texture. And it worked. That's why I've always put myself in straight hair group.
Now also, if I comb it a lot, I get 1a quite easily but with very frizzy ends. Is it really possible for 1c type to get straighten to 1a just by combing? If it is, then I possibly lived in oblivion that I had straight hair.
Or is that my ends lost direction and texture lately due to many dyeings, bleaching and heat? I can't wait to find out.
But I would feel weird and not myself if I after so many years discover that I have wavy hair. And nobody would believe me, haha

I thought I had wavy hair until my layers grew. now it looks like this girl's hair. so definitely 1c. plus, straight hair girls tend to straighten their hair even more to get rid of poofy frizzy clumpy hair so that's why I thought I don't have straight hair.

I decided to take a series of wash day photos, since my texture changes so drastically depending on the situation. I'm not using stylers in any of these photos, but I am using my usual leave-ins.

here I am with my texture photos. I hope you can help me with choosing where do I belong. For me, it isn't much about just knowing precise group, but is more about to find out is this how my hair behaving, typical for wavy hair or damaged hair, or something else?

I washed my hair today only with shampoo, and let it only air dry (no towel). I didn't touch my hair at all, but I had to shake my head just a little bit right after washing, to let my hair fall a bit ( I was washing my hair upside down). On this photo is my hair 5 minutes after washing it.

Next three photos are three hours after. My hair didn't feel completely dry, but I had no time to wait anymore.

On the last two photos I have a lot of spray for frizzy hair ( you can even see the drops).

After the spray dried, my hair texture remained the same, or just slightly wavier, looking wet, defined, without frizz.
After that I normally comb my hair, which made it look more straight.
Too late crossed my mind I should have left it, to see would it through the day look like 2a maybe, or what...? (I'll try that next time)

Sorry for the long explanation, I really don't know if it is necessary for proper typing. I find it important, because I see how with every step, the texture is different. If I only look at washed and dried hair, I would see nothing.

Agava, from those pictures I would guess 2a. But wavy and curly hair tend to need more moisture than straight, so if you're just using shampoo with no conditioner, it could be that your hair is actually much wavier and just under-moisturized. I'd start by treating it like 2a hair, and if you find it getting wavier with more moisture and wavy-focused care, you can adjust your routine.

Very nice, rhosyn_du! paulownia very pretty as well - I'm predicting your hair will end up in the 3s with more length and continued good care ;)

Agave I'd say maybe 1c or 1c/2a because there are hints of individual waves, but the styled photos show it definitely *wants* to be wavy. With more length and consistent good care (I'm assuming your routine is a bit different since joining LHC; apologies if I'm wrong about that) it will likely be a clearer picture. I had a recent hairtyping thread that showed my hair solidly 1b last year, and with a consistent routine of keeping my hair happy and moisturised (plus some protein in the last 6 months), it turns out to be 1c/2a now - so far. We'll see if it changes any more over time, but I'm mentioning this to show the effect that good care can have on even already reasonably healthy hair.

The other thing is you're growing out chemical damage, right? Chemical processes, especially bleach, can change the hair structure - it can make straight hair wavy(ish), wavy hair straight-ish, make curly hair wavy, etc. So your damaged hair might be different from how your virgin hair will be, and again only time will show which way things will go :)

I see waves, too. I myself am a mix of 2a, 2b and 2c and I have the same texture in parts of my hair as you. Just curious if you have ever tried mousse as a styler on damp hair? It can bring out the wave - make it more defined.

I do use conditioner ( cwc) with every washing since september, masks 1-2 per week, and oil mask once in a month. This time I did without conditioner only for a more precise type choosing.
I guess I should switch my mindset that I have wavy hair, and start buying products that would have more purpose for me. I have one mask for moisturising (Aussie 3 minute miracle mask) and I loved it while I still was using hair dryer. I'll try again, but without the dryer. Thanks for giving me your opinion :)

In this stage I really do treat my hair well ( cwc, masks, oils.. no dye, no brush, no heat). I'll have to explore proteins, too. I've never used anything from that group of products. Have you any suggestion with what should I start?
Yes, I have impression that dye and bleach made my hair wavier, and frizzier, but I don't know anymore. As you say, time will show.

I did, few years ago on chin length, layered bangs and fringe. With mousse I've got an impression that my slightly wavy fringe isn't wavy enough for such product. To me, my hair with that length and such products, made me feel that my hair was too static, and see through, if I can say so. I didn't like it. I really like when hair can move freely.
What I always like is: no-rinse sort of creme based on oils ( on wet or dry hair), and silicones on dry hair.

Proteins are usually listed in ingredients either as 'xyz protein' or 'hydrolyzed something-or-other' or are listed as amino acids, either generically 'aminos', 'amino acid' or the actual chemical names such as alanine, serine, glycine, etc. They can be in virtually any type of product and are often found in products for coloured or damaged hair. Some people's hair will take all the protein it can get, some won't tolerate any at all, but it seems most of us have hair somewhere in the middle - it likes a bit, maybe even a fair amount, but not too much (and it will tell you when it gets too much) :) I'd suggest starting with seeing if any of your products contain protein; if they do and you use them regularly it's probably absolutely fine. There is a strand test you can do to see but I can't remember the exact details of what to look for so maybe search for that - or if anyone else can explain, please help us out!

It sounds like you have a good routine though, so definitely keep it up  Don't be afraid to tweak it now and then if you want to, but equally don't feel you *have* to change anything if your hair is happy as things are :)

Agava, I would say 1b/c, or 1c at the most. I would wait for more length, as that may still change the outcome.

I also don't think/feel that I belong to 2a. My hair definitely has no that body, or I still am not ready to accept that my hair is not straight. :( I love waves on the other people, and on me sometimes, but only if they are well defined (with curler, or braid waves while I had long hair). Frizzy, puffy waves are not my cup of tea, but this is what I have here and there. Hopefully my virgin hair won't be frizzy when grow longer.

But, what confuses me, there is one picture ( typing texture thread), where 1c to me looked also too wavy to be close to my hair, and it's even more wavy then one of the other photo from 2a. So, I think I have a lot of 1b, too. While on the second place comes 2c, and maybe only few strands are sure 2a. For now, I'll stay in 1c.

Thank you for your answer. I'll take a look at and sort my products, and I'm going to try every, one by one. I see that it's time to leave idea of straight hair, al least for those dyed strands. I'll still need them in next year or two.

I found your thread about wanna-be waves, and I must say my story and texture is very similar to yours. Only, I don't want more waves then this. I only want them to be frizz free.
Do you maybe remember when your hair was SL or shorter, was it easy to straighten it? For me is/was. That is why I think I should be in 1's. And was your hair frizzy when it was shorter (APL, SL, ChL)?

Oh, I hope it isn't more wavy then this, but it's a good idea to switch to wavy-hair care. I hope it'll help to have more defined form and less frizzy.
Also, I'm thinking about not using a comb so often. I really want to see what is going to happen if I leave that habit I couldn't live without.

These pictures are so good for comparing unprocessed and dyed hair! Mine looked exactly same. Not saying your dyed ends look bad or anything but I didn't like the look on myself and had really dehydrated hair that was close to impossible to fix, so my ends were always sticking together and that was so annoying.

I think it’s 1b or 1c. Fine with average density.

Very nice; for a "true" hairtyping pic though you need to wash, let dry (not touch it, not brush it, no nothing), then make a picture. We can guess all we want but we may be so off due to you brushing the hair. I suspect it may be more wavy than you think.

Thank you Lapushka and MusicalSpoons! I’ll need to conduct a controlled experiment soon :)

Alright. I gave it a go! My hair looks totally different to me. Not sure I’ve ever gone without combing after a shower. I have some weird spirals around my face and underneath my hair, while the rest is kind of wavy. It’s also pretty frizzy but I’m used to that. 2a?

Wow it's been a while since I've jumped 8n this thread so many gorgeous textures guys! I love this thread :)
Flowerbabies, yes I think you've moved into the 2s territory now for sure. I will let someone with more knowledge narrow it down further, gorgeous nonetheless:)

Your hair looks wonderful, flowerbabies! I would maybe call it 2a :)

flowerbabies, I would say 1c/2a. 2a is "stringy with waves" all over, and you have "body" in some places, stringy waves in the other, so I would say on the brink of 2a, so 1c/2a. I have seen this texture before and also called it 1c/2a. :)

Oh that's so interesting flowerbabies, very pretty! I'd have to say 1c for the back and a solid 2a for the sides. Those spirals strongly hint at wanting to be more though, which is always a bit confusing!

Many of us have found it beneficial to do hairtyping photos again over time, as with added length and/or more moisturising routines we often discover more texture

She is at a good hairtyping length, TBH, but it's true, hair can behave differently at different lengths.

I agree, but mine was *definitely* long enough for my first hairtyping pic too ;) I don't want to assume because I don't know her routine or hair history, but we know that a consistently better routine than pre-LHC can continue to have an impact over time. [Until it reaches its maximum natural texture potential, of course.] :)
