View Full Version : Can having frozen hair damage it?

This might be a really weird question, but my hair frequently freezes solid during my walk from the pool where I work to the car in the winter time. As I was sitting in my car with the heat on trying to get my hair to thaw so I can comb it back down, it occurred to me that freezing things usually damages them overtime. Should I start wearing a hat to keep my damp hair from instantly freezing when I go outside? I hate putting a hat on over my wet hair, it just feels "yucky" somehow. shudder: Of course having frozen hair isn't a pleasant feeling either.

Yes, it can actually be quite damaging. Hair breaks extremely easily when frozen. If you don't like the feeling of wet hair under a hat, maybe get a cheap satin bonnet (I've seen them at dollar stores by me), and put that on and then a hat? This way your hat won't get damp. Also hello fellow NY-er :D

Yes, it can. If you brush it out, that’d make it worse and extremely prone to breakage. I second using a hat.

I third the satin bonnet + cap (this is actually what I do in the winter as well). I would also suggest braiding your hair and wearing a braided bun, to prevent your hair from moving around too much in a frozen state.

But I do think the frozen water in your hair could also cause damage in the long run as well, so the braid alone wouldn't fix the problem (I don't think).

And this might sound even more crazy, but if you somehow can only walk to your car with hair wet (have no drying method) I would advise getting one of those microfiber towel cap thingies and then wearing a big beanie over it or a hood (or just the cap itself if you can find one that looks natural, I have pink ones with cat ears though xD)

Where do you find these with cat ears please? Me and my daughter love these and cat ears would be so cute.
eta I usually use them backwards though with the elastic in the front. I find I can just twist my hair in a low pony and fold the pony up and keep my hair in a more natural position rather than flipping everything forward.

I recommend a wool hat! The wool stays much more warm when wet :D

EEk! Thank you!
On topic. It just came up in another thread but maybe a silky bandana/scarf to prevent tangles with the winter hat on top.

Yes, anything frozen can just break off if you're not careful. Does it actually freeze solid, or does it just feel icy cold to the touch (still pliable)?

Thanks for the support guys, sounds like I’ll have to start wearing a hat whether I like it or not lol. And yes lapshuka it does actually freeze solid, like icicles sticking straight out the back of my head or the side depending on which way the wind is blowing. :misskim:

My hair will literally freeze like this, except it’s currently short and only my bangs and top layers are long enough to freeze sticking up!

my aunts hair froze once when she was waiting at the bus stop and she folded her hair by accident and a chunk of it snapped off so be very careful
