Hello,

After many years I finally have no more itchy scalp after Henna and Indigo.

I understood a long time ago that the itchy reaction was due to the indigo (and henna to a lesser extent), being in contact with the scalp during the dye.

The reason is that the scalp is very sensitive, with a lot of little blood vessels, and a little bit of indigo enters blood vessels, causing an itchy scalp and inflammation for a couple of day after dying.

To reduce the contact between Indigo / henna and the scalp, I've used for a long time a brush to apply the dye directly on the hair, reducing as much as possible the contact between the Indigo / Henna and the scalp. In my case, this leads to a reduction of itchy scalp.

2 years ago, I succeeded to reduce even more the itching by applying a mask on the scalp with a little bit of full-fat yogurt, before dying. The idea was to apply a layer of fatty protection before the dye, to saturate the scalp with full-fat yogurt and to reduce the possibility of the indigo / henna to enter the blood vessels of the scalp.

I even add a little bit of full-fat yogurt in the dye, with the hope that the yogurt could absorb a fraction of the most agressive components of the Indigo / henna. In my case, the recipe of dye is 2 teaspoons of Indigo, half a teaspoon of red henna, 1 teaspoon of full-fat yogurt and a little bit of water. Such a dye is enough for hair roots, because my hair is already colored.

Yet, I still had an itchy scalp and inflammation for 1 day approximately after the dye.

Last week, I improved the method to the point that the itchy scalp can hardly be felt.

The idea is to make the dye of Indigo / Henna very thick, with only a little bit of water added. My dye was too liquid, and, as a result, the dye streamed and trickled on the scalp during the hour I kept the dye on my hair.

With a very thick mixture, the dye can hardly stream and trickle on the scalp during the hour I keep the dye. So there is nearly no more itchy scalp.
