I am about 175 years too old for pigtails but if I'd had a daughter, she would have sported them often bc they look so cute.

I love it, GG!

I haven't worn unbraided pigtails in forever, and I'm starting to make an effort not to wear braided ones unbunned for better protection. But I'll try to snap a pic of my braided pigtails next time before I bun them.
I'm of the mindset that you're never too old for braided pigtails! But I'm only 37 so that may change. ;)

I only wear them to BED :p

At 67 they are too 'young' for me...but the best option for getting even braid waves ;)

To me, "pigtails" *are* braids, specifically two of them, one on either side of your head (high, low, french/dutch, more to the back or more to the side, etc., up to you). Two ponytails are just... two ponytails.

I grew up with them being akin to Cindy Brady pigtails (my hair did the same thing as the pics of Cindy below, but with no fringe/bangs thanks to my natural curls) that were reminiscent of coiling pig's tails. And being the 60s and 70s, they got looooong on people, coiled or not. And going even further back, the 50s were full of Western movie cutesy pigtails, bobbing ponytails, and Indian (Native/Indigenous American) braids/plaits being a separate entity again. (Ponytails were the singular tail of hair from the back.) Now it's all over the place thanks to regional blending--see wiki here (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pigtail) (I've never heard them called bunches, though!).

Awwww.....looking at the braid thread....both of mine wouldn't be as thick as one strand of theirs....some are doing 5 strands :thud:

My hair is so wispy, these sleep braids and an english (also to sleep ...or bun) is all I can manage

Yes, I consider pigtails to be the Cindy Brady variety but I won't be wearing those. :) For some reason I don't balk at braided ones but unbraided feels childish or just weird.
Mine used to curl like that as a kid, too. And then in high school I would twist them as they dried and my friends referred to them as "tubes." It was fun.

I haven't worn pigtails in years since my hair is so poofy and long that it sort of reaches for each side and tangles together, so it doesn't completely stay apart! lol. I used to wear them a bit as a child I recall. Occasionally braided pigtails too back then. Now though, the closest I get to pigtails would be two side buns, although they are perhaps too low to be like pigtails, but the small side buns are one of my favorite hairstyles because they even out the weight of my hair to each side of my head instead of all in the back, but then people start asking me if I'm trying to do a princess Leia hairdo. :p

.

So they're supposed to be curled ponytails? That makes the "pigtails" thing make more sense to me (I never figured out why braids were called "pigtails" since pigs' tails aren't braided, and braids aren't curly-- except mine when I've had them wound into a bun and then take them down and they still hold the twist!). But whenever I see ponytails called "pigtails," they're always straight.

Eresh, I need to try that! Actually it sort of looks like it could work for a Ren-Faire hairstyle (says someone who's never actually been to one).

Every time I do braided pigtails I get compliments, even though I feel like I must be too old for them. So the only reason I don't do it more often is that it takes so much longer to braid, and they're getting harder to keep from getting into everything.
I might try some knotted ones for church tonight....

Oh, okay. They're the "Indian schoolgirl" loops (I think we had a thread on those a while back, though I can't remember if it was just a thread or if they were the style of the month)-- or, if you were a girl in the 90s, you probably first saw them on the Kirsten American Girl doll. (https://americangirl.fandom.com/wiki/Kirsten_Larson_(doll)) :) From the angle, it looked like the loops were between the two, not self-loops.

Pardon my late post...

I sometimes do two braids in summer, as an easy way to get the hair off my neck. But I haven't done it as much since I started putting it up in a bun more.

Here's one from 2017; I think this was the only time I've done twin Dutch braids.
