View Full Version : Boar Bristle Brush Alternatives?

I was wondering if there are any alternatives to a BBB for those of us who don't use animal products anymore?
I was looking online and I see that there are cactus bristle brushes for skin, although I couldn't find much on whether they are used for hair, so I was also wondering if anyone here has ever used one? :)

Hmmm that is a very interesting question... I don't have any personal experience using one, but it seems like the most boar-like vegan alternative to a BBB is one made with sisal fibers (a plant in the agave family I believe).
Like this one (https://www.amazon.com/Cebra-ethical-skincare-Sisal-Brush/dp/B00BRHN5IY). I did laugh when I read the product description though, because your hair is neither short nor fine ;)
Other than that, my search for "vegan boar brush alternatives" just turned up wooden combs and pin brushes. Good luck, I'm curious to know what you find :flower:

The wooden bristle brush? I used to like it a lot before having my TT (tangle teezer) and WB (wet brush). I think as far as distributing oils the TT can do a pretty good job at that!
Never heard of cactus bristles. I have to think of pokey needles somehow. LOL! Never heard of bamboo bristles or any other kind of bristle either. I'm sure there are lots of solutions out there, though.
Good luck on your search. I just use pretty conventional brushes, I guess. Since I gave up my mixed BBB!

Do you already have a BBB? While I'm not vegan, I feel like it would be wasteful to throw out a tool you already own, the animal is already dead and has been so for awhile, and the vendor already got your money long ago...

Thank you very much!!! I will have to look into those!! And yes, that description on amazon is kind of funny! haha! I wonder how one can determine what length of hair a brush is appropriate for. :p It seems pretty expensive, but perhaps it would last? I'll definitely look into it!
I will let you know if I find anything good!! The other day I found a cheap $2 synthetic bristle body brush at a dollar store. I normally avoid synthetic stuff, but I liked the texture of the bristles and I thought at the very least I can use it to exfoliate my skin. I still would like to get a natural bristle brush in the near future though, so if I find anything good I'll come back to this thread and update you lovely people. :)

Ahh, thank you for sharing your thoughts too!! I think you are right about the TT! I have something very similar to a tangle teezer and it definitely seems to help distribute oils, even though it is plastic, so that's a good point you bring up! Perhaps I don't need anything more.
Yes! I always think of something prickly too when I think of a cactus so I was pretty surprised to learn this! haha!
Thank you once again!! And that's great! I love to hear what other people find works for them!! :D I recently bought a body brush with synthetic bristles for $2 at a dollar store since I liked the feel of the bristles, even though they are probably plastic, and I don't like to purchase too many plastic things, I figure it probably would have a similar effect as a bbb, especially exfoliating the skin, so I'll see how this goes. :) :flower:

Yes. I have a few, although they are very old and I haven't used them in a long time because of this, so I figure it is time to retire them. I can definitely understand what you mean though. Thank you for sharing your thoughts! :blossom:

Hello !
So, have you tried a Sisal/Tampico (if they are the same) hairbrush ?
I don't have any brush anymore and, of course, really could use one for my tailbone hair. But I refuse to have a new BBB and have never approached a vegan brush that would come close to it.
Also, I haven't found any that says it is fit for long, medium thickness hair.
Did anyone see any ? Or any that (with your more extensive knowledge) that seemed good ? If so, i'd like to try.
To participate in the effort, these are those i found online :

This last one is widely sold online with various descriptions and recomandation about which har it would best fit.
Any thoughts that might help ?
Thank you
