View Full Version : Gentle, Fragrance Free Sulfate Shampoos for Dry Scalp?

I used to use Head & Shoulders 2-n-1 specifically because it was just that right combination to clean my hair and scalp without drying out my hair, but I realize it has cones in it and thus will never get build-up out. I tend to steer away from 'clear' shampoos, they have a dish-liquid effect. I started using a new shampoo that is sulfate-free but still two detergents, but after washing with it my scalp felt super dry - drier than usual, which is a feat on its own. I'm thinking maybe it has fragrance in it that is irritating me (I am prone to eczema all over and the usual suspects are hot water and products with fragrance). It is also rather harsh, so I may not like the cleansers in it. I'm really not sure.

Does anyone have a suggestion for some soothing cleansers that can both clean my hair and not make my scalp so dry? I'm thinking I may need something 'medicated'.

Much appreciated!!

Have you tried Free & Clear shampoo (https://www.psico.com/product/free-and-clear-shampoo/) yet? Or is that the one you already tried? It's not medicated but it shouldn't cause any problems either. I have eczema too and I have liked all the products I tried from this specific company (except for the hair gel, but it's not irritating, it just doesn't have any hold).

Not sure where you are located, but this Canadian brand Curelle is very good:

Oddly I haven't seen that in stores. I don't recognize the ingredients, but it appears to be sulfate free. I'm a little shy of continuing to use them since I've started using cones again. I'm wondering if maybe some of the cones are getting on my scalp and I'm getting build up there.

Free & Clear should be available in drugstores and Target. It is the same company as Vanicream which I don't think I can live without but they have their hair line branded differently for some reason. The shampoo is sulfate-free and the conditioner is silicone-free.

Hmm. Lots of companies tout sodium coco sulphate as being gentler, and you're more likely to find something fragrance-free and creamier in that part of the market. I have no specific recommendations though, as the one sulphate product that's tolerated by my scalp (Femfresh - nope, it's not shampoo!) does contain fragrance and I have very little knowledge of the sulphate market.

This is what I use when I'm not using Head and Shoulders. You probably won't find a fragrance free sulfate shampoo other than probably that one, I certainly haven't found one yet.

Thanks, this looks to be exactly what I'm looking for! I'll give it a shot.

I get it from Sally Beauty Supply. Other beauty supply stores might carry it too. I've never seen it in the drugstore or supermarket though.

The conditioner is not cone free but I'm almost positive the shampoo is.

Oh no, I totally read the subject line as sulfate-free from the beginning. I'm sorry OP!

Lol it's no problem! When I re-read the subject, I kept mixing it up in my head and realized I couldn't be the only one. ^_^

Hey blackgothicdoll, I use e45 shampoo, which is a UK brand. I looked it up and it appears it's sold in the US but really expensive (it's £6 here) - https://www.amazon.com/E45-200ml-Dermatological-Scalp-Shampoo/dp/B001RYUCQU

If you could find it any cheaper I would recommend it, it's mild, sulphate, fragrance-free, and it lathers well. Hope you find something that works for you :)
