View Full Version : Nape hair

We’ve all got it to varying degrees. Some of us are able to style it into tendrils or slick it down or incorporate it into our ‘dos with pins, some have a pretty clearly defined hairline and probably never thought much about it. And some of us have a healthy collection of hairs that stubbornly break or just never grow longer than a few inches and refuse to cooperate with any effort to make them behave.
If you fall into the latter group (like me), and choose to remove them, how do you prefer to do it? Wax/sugar/pluck them off? Shave/trim them? Laser removal? Slather them in cheese? :eyebrows: Please vote and then comment below.

I’ll go first.
I voted pluck. I have a hairline, and then a few inches of baby fine hair that seems to have a terminal length of about 3 inches. I’ve always left it alone and tried to baby it so it would grow longer but no such luck, and it’s definitely not breakage (little cone ends). It makes my updos look unkempt as it refuses to tendril or do anything remotely cute - it just turns into a frizz cloud on the back of my neck. So a few days ago I just plucked them out, and it’s been such a relief to not fuss with them. I usually sugar my legs (when I’m not too lazy to care) so next time I make a batch I’ll probably try that.

I'm way to lazy to do anything with them (same goes for all my body hair tbh), and I generally prefer the messier look anyway because it softens my face. The only time my buns are neat and smooth is when my hair is super greasy because it's creeping up on wash day

I just try to protect them as much as I can by avoiding heat and slathering them in leave-in and/or oil. I remember the time when I did nothing to care for my hair and used heat almost every day... my nape hair was in hideous shape. I'd say it only grew maybe two inches before breaking and had damage in every strand up to scalp. I'm happy with my nape hair now.

I didn't even know it should bother me. Should it? I'm ok with short hair on my nape existing. It's just as precous to me as the hair on the top of my head. Why would I want to remove it?

Mine just does it's own thing. It's all part of my hair, so I like it just as much as the rest of my hair. I look after it, but don't really worry about whether it looks tidy or not. Everyone has them, after all, it's quite normal!

I just leave them alone. Sometimes they are more apparent in my neckline, other times not so much and I have no idea why. LOL. But I don't want wetness/wax or gel in my nape, so I just let it go.

Mine will curl, especially if I twirl them around a wet finger with a tiny bit of gel.

To clarify, no I definitely don’t think it’s something that should bother anyone. And for what it’s worth, I have plenty of other body hair that I don’t remove (lately, any of it haha).
I wasn’t trying to debate how we should feel about our nape hairs, just interested in the methods used by people who choose to remove them.

Nothing. The only thing that would truly help would be wearing low buns and I can't stand the feeling of that on my neck. I've recently started to think about pinning them in place because my sweet spot for buns seems to be getting slightly higher, but time will tell if I can be bothered - or even if they stay in place for more than 5 minutes

I've fought with my nape hair (and also the little wispies around my ears) for a long time, but recently I realized that they'll never be under control. So I trimmed them to about 3" (same length as my bangs), and I put them in pincurls for a few minutes every morning. It turns out that I like the look, at least for now.

None of my hair bothers me ... maybe I am misreading this. Are we talking about the section of hair at your nape or actual neck hairs, like sideburn hair? I don't have the latter.

I picked slather in cheese, only because it's closest to slathering in oil or shea butter. My nape hairs like to curl more than the rest of my hair, so much that they become massive knots. So they must be slathered in something in order to avoid the other option of shaving...

This is my first poll y’all, think I made this more confusing than it probably needs to be. :p
-I mean any hairs on your nape that bug you, mine are outside my hairline
-If you’ve never thought about them then this does not apply to you :D
-I should have worded the poll more clearly, I was interested in how people who remove their nape hair do it, as there is already a fair bit of discussion on how to style them for those that choose

I don't have any nape hairs like this. I do have one hair in front of my ear that looks like he belongs with the rest of my hair but he's nowhere near the hairline. He gets plucked

:D I have one of those halfway down my forehead. It’s very blond though so it can get pretty long before I realize it’s back.

I will twist it then incorporate it into any plait style I am doing. That's mostly to reduce lint and it getting knotted. That's my houdini hair because it tends to wriggle out of twists and plaits despite my efforts. When all else fails I will cut off any knots that have formed. If it means I will lose a few inches there so be it.

They don't bother me, although I also always seem to get puny little 3 inch-ones(at most) like yours. I think it's because my hair is so fine and not very dark - if my hair were darker/more saturated in color, I'd definitely think about doing something about them

I love these hairs! I use them when I do any kind of up-do to give it a low maintenance, natural, minimal effort but still cute look.

I love my nape hair and it seems to have magically grown two or three inches longer than it has been in the past. I hope it's got a longer terminal length and that I can eventually incorporate it into my buns. Since it's winter, it's always being rubbed against the collar of my coat. I decided to get some of those metal snap barrettes and I figure that as long as I'm careful to not pull any hairs out when I'm removing the barrette, this should keep them out of the way until they're longer. Hopefully by next winter they'll be long enough to go in my bun and I won't need to use the barrettes. I might add some MO to the nape hairs, but then they might slip out of the barrette. Which is better?

I actually always admire it when other people are wearing an updo and they have noticeable nape hair, I think it's so cute and somehow adds to the look. I have them myself, and they don't bother me, but what DOES bother me is that I also just have so much shorter hair around my nape that should be part of my bun? I think it's because I caused breakage before I knew I shouldn't just be raking a comb through it when tangled and wet every day, so I'm hoping it'll grow longer eventually.

I adore my nape hairs. Curls! I don’t do anything special with them, and they are long enough to get swept into a bun along with the rest, though they will generally break free by the end of the day.

I hate my nape hairs so much I have an undercut! They were so tangly and anoying. I would spend as much time brushing my nape hair as the whole rest of my head. Also now when I do a low bun it sits a little higher (becuase I shave a sort of triangle shape, not just the baby hairs) and I find it much more comfortable.

The hair at the nape of my neck is the most damaged hair on my whole head, full of split ends and white dots. It's never going to be any good. I've thought about getting an undercut ever since seeing pictures of ones with patterns (example (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/159174168061085892/)).
Thus far, I'm holding out out of fear that my nape hair serves a shield of some sort. If I cut it off, would the next layer of hair obtain that same damage?

I would never dream of removing them in any manner, nor do I feel the need to do anything else about them either.

Nothing. I'm too lazy to bother with them in any way. They're not short but they're not long and just an awkward length. Oh well.

I love them, but i also working out a lot, sometimes I use small clips or hair pins to fix them so they don’t get in the way during my sweaty cardio exercise.

Up until 3 or 4 years ago, I used to shave them off. But they don't grow very long anyway so it's easier to just leave them be

I nearly voted slather in cheese :) I make sure I catch the nape hairs when I do a pre wash oiling because I’ve found they form lovely ringlets if they’re nice and supple. They need far more oiling or conditioner than the rest of my hair.
When I had a pixie though I shaved the nape hairs off, because mine grow straight up when they’re short and push the hair above out at 90 degrees :)

I typically do nothing with mine, but they will curl nicely if I twirl them. It's nice to have options :)

I just let them fly in the breeze, just as with my other hair that is all around my head and has a short terminal.

They stick out of my wraps and look crazy. I shave them along with my baby undercut. Both are the result of a hairdresser at some point shaving it to "clean things up" and leaving me with buzzed hair when the rest was already waist length. Been considering growing them back out.

I get them trimmed along with the rest of my hair. If they fall out of updos, I use a cute barrette or clip to keep them in place.

Lately all that fluff on my nape has been bugging me when I see it in my bun pictures, but I wonīt really do anything about it. I mean, unless I see that baby hair in the picture, I donīt know itīs there and I donīt mind it. My DH used to shave it off when I had shorter lengths - pixie, bob - it really looks better trimmed with those lengths, but now my hair is hip length, who cares.

I just ignore it. It's natural and most people have it, and it would be painful to deal with even if I wanted to.

I thought I have no nape hair until I read this poll. Then I studied my neck and realize I do have a few hairs that are only a couple inches long. They don't bother me, or I would have realized i have them. :D My whole head of hair is kinda fuzzy anyway because I don't use conditioner or any products.

For years I've done nothing to them, but recently they've been so tangly and rough even after deep treatments so I had to do something. I held them taut and snipped off 3" so they measure about 4" now. I looked at the bits I cut off and over half of them were riddled with splits and white dots. I no longer have to separate them to detangle and they feel as soft as the rest of my hair.

I've started making a point to trim off any fairy knots or splits when I see them. Off and on will pin/clip them up when my hair is up since they are long but not long enough to reach a bun or ponytail and fall out.
