View Full Version : Am I REALLY 1c(/2a)?

Hello!

Last time I asked for hair typing opinions, the majority of those who answered my call said I was 1c (based on the pictures I provided then).

I later labeled myself 1c/2a based on the Visual Hairtyping Guide, but now after seeing my latest airdried and unbrushed photo (pattern not manipulated in any way), I am in doubt again.

https://i.ibb.co/bLvvwLr/hius111218.jpg

With the definition of solid 1c being "straight with body wave and one or two visible S-waves (e.g. nape of neck or temples)", I think that can be scrapped right away. 2c is defined as "loose, stretched out S-waves throughout the hair", which sounds fair enough, but what you don't see in this photo is that I have a tendency to get spiral curls next to my face, which is not mentioned until 2c.

My hair is damaged below the shoulders. Brushing tends to make my hair poofy if not oiled.

What am I to make of all this?

Your texture looks a lot like mine, and I also tend to have spiral curls around my face. I consider myself 2a since I don't have the 2b braid wave texture nor the even more distinct 2c texture. Maybe that's a common area to get spirals?

2b should look a lot like braid waves, and I don't really see that in your hair. But it's not straight. I'd be inclined toward 2a. However, it's easier to see texture lower down so since you have damage below the shoulders, I'd reevaluate as you grow the damage out.

lovely waves and fairytale ends :) definitely not 1, so definitely not straight hair! your hair is for sure 2a-2b. my hair is almost pin straight on the top and it bens a bit on the ends. I guess I still have the haircut from the past that is giving that "shape", texture to my hair, otherwise I'd consider myself 1b/1c, but let's see how my hair looks when it's longer, weighed down or something. probably I'll consider it 1b/1c when I get rid of the "shape" of the haircut.

You look like a wavy to me, so 2a. So pretty!

I think our hair is quite alike, Ylva! :D I`m also not sure how to type my hair

Yes I think that is 1c/2a! At the very max. 2a. Very pretty, Ylva.

Based purely on the photos and descriptions in the visual hairtyping guide, your waves look longer than 2b but more defined than 2a. Solgave I'd say the same for you, although your waves look slightly shorter than Ylva's - again, based purely on the visual guide.

Ylva face spirals can be misleading because my own wispies form very thin spirals in high humidity (and I'm not a wavy) - hairtyping is based on the majority of the hair, but we still get to have cool little quirks in our hair :)

Based on the latest pics and what you're describing, I'm going to say 2a.

For sure it is. I don't know why, but it is!

I'll definitely have another look at it as the health travels further down.

Thank you so much! :) Yes, it's surprising how big of an impact haircuts and that sort can have on the way the texture looks!

Very similar for sure! Your hair is really beautiful, I always admire your hairdos as well! The recent braided bun pic inspired me to try and learn that style myself. :)

I just don't see myself fitting the 1c requirement at all anymore. Thank you very much!

Thank you for that analysis. I understand that hairtyping goes by the majority of the hair, but I'm just a bit confused because my spirals aren't wispies, they're proper locks of hair on each side of my face, which seems to be the exact definition of 2c in that regard.

Based on the latest pics and what you're describing, I'm going to say 2a.

It seems like I am changing my texture to 2a for the time being.

A big thanks to everyone for your input!

I think it is 1c/2a. Mostly straight, but with slight waves here and there.

I agree with 1c/2a as well.

The second pic is interesting to me. My hair looks like that in the winter without manipulation as well. But I still consider myself a 2a/2b because I can get it to look like 2b with the right products (and no heat tools).

Damaged hair won't curl as much as healthy hair. You have pretty S-waves around the top, though.
Try applying a curly hair product to damp hair (no brushing/combing/excessive raking) and see if you like wearing that look. If not, keep doing what you're already doing.

Pre-henna, with lots of effort and at a shorter length this is as much body/curl/wave as I could muster with products and some manipulation (no heat tools):

The henna has been a real game changer for me. I miss my natural texture :( But, the idea is to call your hair what it is in its natural state not after products and manipulation so I tag myself 1c/2a with henna and 2a/2b when it was completely natural.

My hair isn't as wavy as yours was in it's natural stage. My roots are never that wavy.

Thing is, the natural state of hair changes depending on the weather, length, and condition of hair.. so I'm starting to think that hair typing for us that fall into 1c/2a/2b will never be really possible.

I can easily go along with 2A.

I feel like after henna = after product since we know henna often straightens hair/changes texture. Of course, then I have no idea what my hair type is since I dye it, and that would cause damage xD I'm looking forward to finding out in a few years. But! I'm more interested in: did you change your routine because your hair became straighter?

Yes, my hair has become way more wavy and wurly when i stopped dyeing it with henna/chemical dye. So the only way to know your hair type for sure is to have all.of your natural hair. I think i will retype my hair once again, when i get rid of the dye.

That's my plan as well. I'm assuming my hair will be more 1c with henna, but if my routine continues to work (I some times squish to condish, and I LOC), then I'll just keep using it. My hair after day one is pretty straight anyway, with all the combing/brushing/manipulation. I'll probably retype about three years after I am done with henna; that should be enough time to see if there is change.

Yeah, i remember my hair was 1c/2a with Henna, but once i gave it up and a year has passed, i started becoming more of a full 2a. My waves tend to spiral around each other sometimes after a wash or if i don't manipulate my hair, so i am pretty sure with the right hair care routine i could pass as a 2b.

I'm not sure how much the chemical dye has affected my wave pattern (I suspect it's made it wavier, actually, but who knows?). Since I'm 2a with it, I wonder if I'll be pushing 2b or even 2b/2c after. I'd love to be 2b; I think it's my favourite hair type.

Edit: With my luck, I'm probably 1b/1c without chemical dye xD

Yes I would definitely re-evaluate if there's only one layer of bleach in there, Ylva.

Hahaha, good luck! Maybe you'll get it!

My favorite is also 2b :)
