View Full Version : The Rocking Bangs Thread

Astrid Carlisle and I were talking about bangs and figured we should have a thread for those of us who are maintaining bangs despite our hair's length!
We can share pics and advice about bangs' shape and thickness for different hair types, self trimming for bangs and whatever crosses your mind!

I'll start :) I have had bangs most of my life. I started growing them out some months ago because I wasn't sure if I would want to have them at longer lengths, but by the end of the year when the no trimming challenge ends I'll cut them back again (they are mouth-length right now) because I definitely think I look better with them! Plus they fit my style quite well. I won't be trimming my length though.
I prefer blunt bangs on me, one inch or so above my eyebrows. I cut them myself (I have for years), as they are not that thick it's quite easy.

Yours are so cute, I really like that style as well :) good thing is you can always try a little shorter and if you don't like it that much they will be at their starting length in a month or so

I belong in this thread too. Your bangs look lovely TreesOfEternity :o
I'll post some pics too when I have time to take some & my hair is washed. I haven't taken hair photos for awhile. I don't like my current hair length (past collarbone) because it is such an awkward length on me.. But I will try to take some photos for this thread :)

And here are mine :) I haven't had bangs since I was 17 or so, and back then it was so hard to grow them out after having them for some years, and I thought, "I will never cut them again!" But here I am :D have been thinking about them for weeks. Maintenance hasn't been as hard as I expected. First time they were cut (pic with my hair up) by my mum's friend (hairdresser), just in case, and I have since cut them myself 2ce already (pic with hair down).

What a good idea for a thread!
And what a lovely pictures, everyone!
I just saved some older bangs pics in my album, if someone is interested.
As I mentioned in nycelles thread, I think I'm gonna cut bangs again as soon as possible. I'v been thinking about this for a while now. Actually I'm thinking about it always when I don't have bangs.
My hair is wavy, so having bangs is a bit challenging, but at the moment I feel I'm ok with it. And I think it might help with the growing out part, it blends well and it has never been a problem for me. And now I have a hot air brush too, I think it might be good tool for styling bangs? Does anyone have experience of it?
Side swept bangs, even quite short, usually works well for me, but I feel I want straighter or rounder bangs this time. I think they should work better if they blends in in the sides.
And then I have this question, maybe it's really stupid, I just don't know. But would it be possible to relax just the bangs? Would that help with the maintenance and styling? Is it even possible to relax wavy hair? And if yes, is it something you can easily do at home? Any thoughts?

I'm in an awkward bangs phase. I used to have shorter (around eyebrow) length side swept bangs but I wanted to grow them to about cheekbone length, still side swept. Right now they're still at the poke me in the eye length. I do love bangs but the transition to longer bangs is annoying!

Astrid Carlisle bangs look so good on you. They remind me of my bangs back in April. I've been growing them out since though; even tho i loved them on me, I don't think i will cut them again.
But I will be lurking around this thread a lot, as I really like bangs in general.

Trees and Astrid, your bangs look fantastic! Makes me want them again...
I haven't had straight-across bangs since I was a kid. In my adult life, they've always been side swept, which I think looks nice on me, but I'm curious. The last time I had a stylist cut bangs on me, I mentioned having them straight across and the stylist recommended side swept. I don't know if that was because she thought they'd work better with my face or hair or because of trends or she just didn't know how to cut them the other way... Haha. I don't know. I should do some straight-across fake bangs and see what I think.
TreesOfEternity
December 2nd, 2018, 04:04 PM
AmaryllisRed I had a similar experience some years ago with an stylist. I always thought the reason was that side swept bangs are a more conservative option as they don’t change your face as much as straight across, are easier to grow out, work for multiple hair textures...
trying clip-ins is a good option before deciding to cut yes!

lapushka yes I was, well technically I still am, as I’m in the no trim challenge until the end of the year, but for the last month I’ve been feeling I don’t really enjoy how I look without bangs :( I look way too severe, I’m quite self conscious about my forehead, and the cowlicks on my front hairline make my face more asimetrical.
I was happy with the idea of one-length hair but I’m frustrated as it doesn’t look as I expected on me, so I decided I’m going back to bangs as I’ve always had. I’m doing a two month rule instead of a two week so it will be a really well thought decision hehe.
I feel I have to do what works for me, not what I *wish* that worked for me or what I like on others I guess.

I feel the same way. I used to have it all one length and I felt like it put too much emphasis on my forehead esp when I would pull my hair back to bun or whatever. I feel like bangs soften my features and make me look younger. :)

I tried to make an appointment last Friday but the stylist I want is booked through the end of January. I did make an appointment, but was hoping to have them before the New Year so I'm still looking for someone that does a great fringe.
Hopefully I'll have some pics to share soon!

I'm happy to see a thread like this. I rarely see long hair with a fringe in real life so I feel like a bit of an anomaly at times. That plus when I joined long hair forums everyone was growing out their fringe. I've had a fringe for most of my life and probably always will. A fringe make me look less severe, hides an unattractive hairline and forehead wrinkles, and makes me look younger and more attractive (important at my age).
I'd be interested to know how others part their fringe and whether they cut it themselves. My shape is currently a triangle on the thick side. I'm planning on growing some pieces out and not sure whether to stick with the triangle or try something different.

I don't really have bangs anymore, but I used to, and I still like bangs (namely on other people) so I figured I'd see if I could find pictures of them. This isn't a great picture, but it's one of the few I could find with my old bangs actually looking decent and my cowlicks tamed.

Me too. I usually do a triangle as well, I don’t know if I should use less amount of hair, I’m afraid if I cut less the fringe will be see through which is not what I’m going for. But I want to keep as much thickness as I can for my length so it’s tricky

It's a little embarrassing sharing my pictures because I cut them myself and my hair looks horrible, but at least you can see what a weirdo I was as a teenager:

She cut a bit too, I haven't measured yet, but I'm guessing maybe 3 cm. Better ends and this new style makes me want to wear my hair down more often, I think.
By the way, she told me not to wash my hair so often and that see thinks Dove has good hydrating hair products and the grocery store across the street sells them.

So much love for the bangs! I have always had bangs because I feel like I have a giant forehead. When used to go to a salon to get my haircut they would always style them up and back, leaving my forehead bare and I hated it. I would sit in the car and try and try to get them back down again, even going home to fix them before I would go anywhere. I do have to fight 2 cowlicks, one on each side but a quick minute with the hairdryer and they are tamed.

Woo hoo! BANGS! I love my bangs and I've had them for nearly all my life. I plan on keeping them as I continue to grow the rest of my hair. I've been cutting my own bangs since I was about 13, and I like to think I've gotten pretty good at it lol. When I was in high school I had super thick, chunky bangs (sort of anime inspired) and then did micro-bangs for a few years in college (...it was NOT a good look on me :tmi:) and now I keep my bangs a bit past eyebrow length and I keep the ends a bit thinner so the brows peek through. These are recent pics:

I was watching anime one day and noticed that a girl with her long hair out was able to lean forward into a bowl of ramen and not have it interfere. Ever since then I've felt very tempted to give bangs a try. Closest I went was end-of-nose length, but I was still able to tuck it behind my ears
I am a dude so the fear of looking more feminine has a lot to do with why I haven't fully committed to trying it. That and being able to keep hair off of forehead on a whim without requiring pins, gel or a hat. Maybe this autumn I will!

Goodness, you all look stunning! Bangs really do make one's eyes pop out and give your hair a style even when put in a bun. I usually think of it as a "short-hair" style, but it looks so unique with your long hair.

Nonsense! I have the thinnest finest hair ever, and they just pull farther back on my head to make the initial bangs to make them appear "fuller and thicker" if you really love them, you should go for it. my hair is SO FINE and I have not 1 but TWO cow-licks on my hairline on the right an left side. I SHOULD not have bangs but everyone says I look great with them. I have to take extra extra work for them. but i think it pays off. I got a picture of muy long bangs. They've started getting annoying, but I think I will hold off a little longer before trimming the parts I want to keep. Should be an interesting transition. I think one of the things I like about bangs is I can experiment a bit and not feel like it's a huge commitment. It just takes a few months of growing to change them up again.

I'll keep a side swept bang, just thinner. I have some pictures from 6 or 7 years ago, and I liked the thinner side bangs I had then. The rest I'll probably try out as face framing chin length layers. We'll see if it looks good or if I just keep growing them out into the rest of my hair. I think I'll keep some at chin length, I've had that before, and really liked it. We'll see how it goes this time. :)

Anyone else work at growing them for over a year and then decide to cut them. Seemed like a waste of all that struggle.

Chalk it up to experience rather than seeing it as a waste. You gave it a go and decided it wasn't for you. Along the way you may have learnt something about yourself, or at least how to persevere and have patience, and you've probably learnt a thing or two about dealing with awkward bangs. Being so much longer gives you the option to try a new style of bang if you'd like rather than the same as before.
I often promise myself that I will grow mine out and then cut in a different style but I never get that far. Consequently I always seem to be dealing with some pieces that I'm growing out and which are difficult to style.

Y'all look so good in bangs! makes me want to cut mine back, but I think that would be a bad idea.
I had bangs all my childhood, when I entered my teens I started a spiral of trying to grow them out and then cutting them back. Last time I got the urge to cut them back (and went on with it) was in 2016, now they're at the same length as my hair.
I love the look of bangs, I like that the hair in the front don't get in the way of ones sight, I like that it gives something more once the hair is up in a bun. But on me? I don't know, there's something about bangs that just looks weird on me. I can't find any decent photos of me with bangs (from above age 12), which must mean that I don't have any decent photos of me with bangs, all old photos of me is when I've pinned them back somehow.
I know that if I cut my bangs straight across, normal level, medium thick...I look just like I did when I was 10, and I don't know how I like that.

I have a couple cowlicks on my fringe, so fresh out of the shower I have to dry them in place with a blow dryer (sometimes I let the rest of my hair just air dry).
In the morning if they are acting up I spray a little bit of dry shampoo on them and that usually works really well (I will tame them with the blow dryer a little bit if they keep on sticking up).
Another option, if the cowlick is really strong and/or you want no styling, you can adapt your fringe’s shape to your cowlicks like so:

I've always had bangs and I always trim them myself. When they start to get in my eyes I get out the special scissors and take off as little as possible to avoid looking "chopped," maybe once a month, and occasionally I thin them out a little if they look bushy. My technique has improved over the years! I used to trust hair stylists to do this, but it would take weeks for their mistakes to grow out ;).

But I really love my bangs, cutting them in December was one of my best hair decisions lately and I'm so happy I learned to trim them myself, I have done it the whole time now.

I always had bangs when I was younger and then cut them back in about 4 years ago. I grew them out to chin length last year but I much prefer myself with bangs so they're back and here to stay :p
You all work your bangs beautifully!

Self trimming our bangs is a life saver, I think i would not have them if I had to go to the hairdressers so often. And this reminds me mine need a trim as well haha.
Lately I’m wearing them side swooped instead of straight across so I dont trim that much.

Oh dear... My life with bangs :D Right now they are getting long so they get side swept or worn up. I'll have them trimmed next week since I need to start looking presentable.
