View Full Version : Deep conditioner that's fragrance-free, dye-free, protein-free, and silicon-free?

Hi there!

My title says it all: I'm on the lookout for an elusive, unicorn of a product, a deep-conditioning treatment that has no fragrance, dye, protein, or silicone. The silicone isn't a deal-breaker, but the others are. Protein leaves my hair brittle and fragrance and dye can induce dermatitis if not anaphylaxis (even "natural" fragrances do). At the same time, I can use safflower oil or olive oil (shea butter seems okay, as well), but argon and jojoba seem to cause itchiness.

Does anyone use or know of such a product? I have simply applied oil to my hair and left it in until washing, but once I wash, there seems to be no real effect after.

Thank you!

You could have a look for conditioner bases, and go by the reviews to gauge how heavy they might be. They usually contain literally just the conditioning ingredients, maybe some plant oils and possibly glycerin or aloe vera, and you're free to play around with whatever else you might want to add. I can't think of any other product to fit the bill, but then I also don't know where in the world you are for what might be available to you. Usually conditioner bases are made by smaller companies so if you're not sure about anything in the ingredients lists you're likely to get a good response if you contact them and explain exactly what you need to avoid and why.

And welcome to the forum! :flower:

Coming back with some actual product recommendations; you may or may not be able to find them where you live. I don't know if these are deep conditioners but you could always doctor them if necessary :)
(These links are simply because they list full ingredients, not suggestions where to buy them. I tried to only list ones without the ingredients you said cause itching but I apologise if I missed something.)

As promised, popping over to reply... but I'm embarrassed now. The hypoallergenic conditioner I was going to recommend is not cone free :(

But, if you ever decide to try despite that, this is what it is: https://www.naturellepro.com/product/biotera-hypoallergenic-ultra-gentle-conditioner

It's not a deep conditioner but I imagine it could be used as such, or modified with additional ingredients to be used as such. I cannot tell if there is protein in it. I LOVE this conditioner with all my heart.

This one is cone free, but also not a deep conditioner. Like the above, don't know if there's protein, but I think it can be modified with other items to make it a deep conditioner: https://www.psico.com/product/free-and-clear-conditioner/

My biggest problem with hypoallergenic stuff is they're often like "No synthetic fragrances" then add EO. EO causes my skin to react badly (makes my itching worse, I have dermatographism with pruritus, which is the most useless diagnosis ever, as that's a diagnosis of symptoms and not the cause). The only bright side is if I decide to "suffer through the itch" (which I sometimes do) is that I'm not at risk of dying from anaphylactic shock.

Have you tried baby food ? I know it sounds weird, there are you tube videos about it, and you can get the organic ones with only the fruit/vegetables and maybe some preservatives, usually citric acid or similar. The only fragrance would be the natural fruit scent.
If you wanted to you could also add oil, aloe or whatever you want.
I've done it before a few times, it's not bad. I've only used banana and carrot .

I use banana and sometimes mango. I also use coconut milk and there's times I use fenugreek, yoghurt and honey (fenugreek, honey and olive oil also works) but I don't know if the last 3 are suitable since they do have protein in them.

How about Desert Essences Fragrance free conditioner? I like that one. You can add a tablespoon of aloe and honey to make it deep conditioning :)

ETA: adding the aloe and honey is referred to as 'SMT' and there's a thread floating around here somewhere. :) Oops, I missed your jojoba note. This one likely contains jojoba oil. Sorry!

Are you allergic to essential oils also? I love Trader Joe’s tea tree tingle conditioner. Not sure if it has protein it it. Unfortunately most conditioners contain fragrance or some protein. Have you tried searching on Etsy? Sellers can custom make it for you. My favorite Conditioner is flaxseed Conditioner by Jakeala and no protein.
