Hair flips out at all lengths until BSL

So, as a kid I had pretty sleek hair (https://imgur.com/1Hy802G) that I used to just blowdry, no product used (or needed):

Then I grew it out (https://i.imgur.com/3gBqpFw.png) with no trims (https://i.imgur.com/I09IJte.jpg) once. This looked sooo bad. I also didn't know conditioner existed yet.

Then I grew it out properly (https://i.imgur.com/YTLIbGl.jpg)after cutting it again (https://i.imgur.com/VLO0p0j.jpg).

Why does it do this flippy thing :(

I cut it off in part because it never looked good and I pulled it back most of the time. Also, chemical damage...

Products with no sillicone make it look like the pic where it flips out everywhere (green shirt). Using conditioner doesn't really help either (last pic). :evil:

Is it wavy at all or is the texture just :crazyq:!?

The bangs in the pictures haven't been color treated. Heck, my hair hasn't been color treated in the first 3 pictures!

I'm open to suggestions on how to make it behave in the future.

Haha, I'm sorry, but it took me so long to understand what you were talking about! :o That flip is perfectly normal, I've had that pretty much my entire life. Hair got a tendency to flip out when it touch something (not all kinds of hair, but mine surely does), it means that it normally won't have straight ends, they will randomly flip in this and that direction, and they will create bigger ones as they touch a "curve" (such as ones shoulders, which is an awkward length for me because of the big flips I get at that length).

I believe the only hair type that definitely does not do this is type 1a, everyone else that got 0 flips probably straighten their hair. If I were you I would embrace it, it doesn't look bad to me at all :p

I think it's very normal unless you have zero texture to your hair... the cut can make a huge difference in how it lays as well (especially as it grows through those wonky stages!)

Yep, your hair definitely has a curve to it, so I'd say there's at least a little wave - maybe 1C. Maybe.

But ends flipping out is totally normal and as pretty as any other hair shape. Mine curves inward on one side and flips out on the other when I blow-style it, even though I do my best to get that side to curve inward. Left to its own devices, it looks like my signature picture, but longer now.

That "flippy" thing; it does that, because your hair is a tad wavy, say like 1c or 1b/c. Perfectly normal for that texture. And there's nothing you can do about it, if you don't want to keep blowdrying it straight all the time.

There's plenty of methods here to enhance that wavy texture, so I say... go for it! :flower:

It's super flat on top and flips out under the ear, so, super unflattering.

What can I do about it looking so thin and limp when it's longer?

I've always said I had flippy hair, not wavy or straight, flippy. My hair does this at any length, Even at hip it's still flips at the ends. I just learned to realize it's never going to be anything else so I just accept it

Ah, my hair looks similar at that length. No matter what it'd just be all flippy and weird. Personally I just got used to wearing it up or I'd put it in a braid after I washed it so when it was dry it had waves that were intentional....so at least I felt a little more in control :D

Sarah is right. You can't do anything about it, unless blowdry it straight or straighten it all the time. Or, accept that you have wavy hair and try and enhance it like I mentioned. Try reading the book "curly girl" by Lorraine Massey.

Well, your hair just tends to change texture when you grow up. As the others already said, unless you want to straighten it every day, there isn't much you can do about it. And TBH, I'd rather embrace it ;)
