The other day I was telling other member that my straight hair has so much frizz sometimes. They told me that 1a hair doesn't have frizz and that it was very strange.
I've always being known for having very straight hair, but maybe it's not as straight as I always thought. I just took some hair typing pictures in case you guys can help me to figure out which type my hair is. In the last one you can see my usual frizz, and in the others how it tends to separate in little sections when I haven't combed it.

You have gorgeous hair TreesOfEternity :crush: I think I spot some body waves on your second pic, I'd call it 1b. Mine is similar, the frizz is only tamed with a light oiling and bunning/braiding. As far as I know, 1a hair hangs freely like curtain, 1b has more body to it while being very straight to the view, and 1c has body and maybe an S wave near the face/ears.

Aw thank you!! :heartbeat I do the same, put some oil and braid it until it behaves a little bit. Now that I recall, I can remember some girls in my school class having really really straight fine hair that hanged like a curtain as you said, I can definitely picture the diference now, but I just thought my hair was simply frizzy or damaged.

You have lovely hair! It looks like 1b to me :)
A lot of us straight haired gals have found clandestine waves in there, it’s a revelation!

Oh that frizz looks familiar ;) Yeah, I'd say 1b too. Very pretty hair! :crush:

Gorgeous hair! And I agree, 1b. As a 1a, I admire your volume!

Okay I have the same hair type as you so now I know I I have 1b hair, I've been wondering if I'm honest!

I think that is 1a/b at the most. 1b has a distinct body wave, which your hair doesn't, but it's not flat-flat either and has some "volume" to it, so that's why I would go with the 1a/b.

I don't think it's true that 1a has no frizz. My hair is definitely 1a; it's coarse, and frizz-prone.

The only true 1a hair I've seen in real life is my mothers and grandmothers which like Doreens, is coarse. But theirs doesn't really have frizz, at least not the same kind of frizz wavy/curly hair gets. More of like a static frizz.
Yours looks like 1a/1b to me.

1b looks straight, it doesn’t show waves but the ends might flip one way or another. 1b has volume in comparison to 1a.
1a is really rare where I live, I’ve only ever met a handful of people with true 1a hair and it’s very distinctive. The 1a hair that I have seen has no frizz, no bumps, looks the same day in day out. It’s stunning and beautiful :)
I’ve lived with two people with 1a hair, one I shared a house with at college, the other one is my husband! I thought I had stick straight hair until I saw theirs in comparison (although mine has developed some waves since I had a baby). 1a hair stands straight up in the air when very short. My husband had hair like a bristle brush when he was a baby.
This is the definition of 1b from the hairtyping guide:
“1b - straight but with a slight body wave, just enough to add some volume, doesn't look wavy”

Yes, it's a slightly different type of frizz for sure. Static frizz is a great description! My sister has fine hair but it's also 1a, and her frizz looks similar to your third picture, TreesOfEternity. All hair types can get frizz under the right (or wrong, haha) conditions.
If you told me your hair was 1b, I wouldn't bat an eye, but if you asked me to classify it, I would say 1a.

This is true for me too. I have don't get frizz. I thought that was one of the characteristics of 1a hair.

Looking in the mirror at the back of my head the length of my hair isn't frizzy. I guess I've been mistaken this whole time. My frizz is from baby hairs (mostly around my face and at the nape) which are fighting the urge to stand straight up, as Lady Stardust described.

Yeah, that's what I meant by static frizz, kinda like when you stuck your finger in an electric socket and it stands up..lol..

Thanks a lot everyone for your input! :flower: 1a/1b sounds about right, I love hearing about other people’s experience with 1 hair :) Doreen your hair definitely looks way more straight and smooth than mine, very pretty.
Also thank you guys for the compliments, I wasn’t really feeling my hair lately so you really made my day :)

This thread made me realize that I am actually 1b and not 1a myself. Go, extremely subtle body waves!
You've got enviable hair, though. The exact label on it doesn't really matter as much as that.

Idk, I'm new here so take this as a grain of salt. It might be 1b, but for the most part it looks 1A to me.

I think she settled on 1a/b a long time ago. ;) This thread is about half a year old!

Sounds to me more what we'd call 'wispies' rather than frizz, maybe? :)

1a hair can have frizz. ANY type of hair can have frizz. I don’t know why someone would make that statement without even attempting to research about it.
Your hair looks 1a to me. Still very straight despite frizz. But still very nice looking.
Frizz is a result from curlier hair being separated and fluffed our, or flyaways/broken hairs.

I think it’s referring to the likelihood of those hairs to stand up, which is much stronger when they have a wavy or curly texture. I think there is a subtle difference between flyaways and frizz; in my mind I associate the former with very straight hair or hair that has been blow dried straight, the latter with wavy, curly, kinky, or otherwise textured hair.

This is an old thread but proves something I've been told was not right.... straight hair can have frizz and it doesn't involve texture waves or curly hair like other people love to preach to everyone in the internet or real life!!!!!!
I can't stand when people thinks i have wavy hair, in reality my hair just loves to frizz out without any manipulation going on, especially after washing and that's about it. Sure oiling and braiding or wrapping it can help a ton in taming it and making it either straight smooth or wavy, however im pretty tired of the stigma with frizz happening and that I have to put a ton of product which weight down my stands.
I think my hair resembles a lot the original poster, currently my hair is armpit length and it behaves full into the 1B 1C spectrum depending on the whether or how conditioned it is, but static and frizz is part of my life and im sure there are more "straigties" outside by either have fallen victims for things like curly hair method with one hundred products or heat styling to the hell and just feel bad or put on blame when its a natural thing. Straight hair is not always sleek and smooth, neither is damaged when it is naturally frizzy. :)

That’s understandable. I know the post is old, but I’m just sharing my findings with you. There’s also hair density and hair diameter. A fine hair strand will do all sorts of things. Including fly around. OP has fine hair as well. Not to mention it has the capacity to bend, and make waves, when it otherwise is typically pen straight. If you have any type of breakage or shorter hairs, they tend to deviate from the bulk of the hair. Go every which way they want. Ergo frizz. Especially at the crown area. If you don’t have a lot of fly aways or broken hair, or hair that is all one even length, then yeah it’s normal to assume straight haired folks don’t get frizz. There’s a lot of variables that go into it, down to how you have your hair when you sleep. If you have fine hair pretty much anything can cause waves or frizz giving the illusion of any sort of texture. Only way to tell is to wash and let it dry without disturbing it or putting product on it.
