 An attempt was made! Definitely way too short still. First I had to modify it into a "peace" bun instead of a Spock bun, and then... it immediately started exploding.

I canít make this hold with a stick, so I had to (had to!) order longer forks. Love it, will have to try to get a photo for this and the Jeterforks thread.

I hadn't tried this before, but I am very happy to have found it now because it holds like a rock without being too tight!

No photos because I'm victim of a serious case of "can't-photograph-the-back-of-her-head"itis, but it looks very nice and makes my hair look thicker too. It's a win/win situation!

Bun success, photo of the back of my head fail.

It took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out what it had to do with Spock. *slinks away in shame before someone revokes my Trekkie card*

Ugh, tried and failed. I need about a foot more length - damn you thickness!(but not really).

ravenskey
September 9th, 2018, 03:17 PM
Okay so no sooner had I posted that I failed than I remembered a trick from torrinpaige on YouTube.

And thus:

https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=33281&d=1536524093

It is frizzy and exploding and loopy and I don't care because I held it up using a way too short torch and didn't brush my hair.

Here are a few of my own Spock buns. I invented this bun because my hair is thin and it makes a bigger bun.

[I noticed a few of you mention about it being tight; I find by the time I've loosened it enough to get the fork through, it's slightly too loose to hold like a rock :hmm: I'll be trying with a thinner-tined fork that's in the post, so I'll see if that makes any difference. Just if I don't loosen it, it messes up the inside of the top loop - a bit like when I do a lazy-wrapped L-infinity, actually, or even a celtic knot. Maybe my technique is wrong!]

*How the heck does my keyboard not recognise 'Spock' when I swipe?! This must be remedied immediately, or no Trekkie card for you, keyboard!

Aww. That is one of the (few) advantages of having thinner hair! It's not like you iiis need the illusion of bigger buns anyway :p

Success at last! Iíve had a lot of trouble with getting the top loop loose enough to get a fork in comfortably without the bottom being so loose that it a) slips out entirely, or b) just lets the whole thing slowly rotate free.

Messing with them before wrapping the tail seems to have been the answer. I like that itís bigger, my hair compacts a lot considering how much of it there is.

My hair is also to short/thick to do this properly but I managed an approximation by using a trick that TorrinPaige has on YouTube.

You basically divide your hair as if you're doing a half up, make what ever bun with the top section, and then wrap the remaining hair up. Depending on what your hair's like and what you're using to hold the bun you may need some pins or something. I don't think Torrin needed any in the video.

Ligeia Noire
September 12th, 2018, 08:59 PM
Well, yeah but then that is not quite a spock bun anymore. I tried again today but with fresh washed wavy hair is even harder, I have small hands with small fingers, it just does not hold all the hair while I am wrapping around,

psyc2321
September 13th, 2018, 07:28 AM
Ligeia Noire, would it be easier to hold if you did it as a braided Spock bun? At least as a way to practice and play with it until you find better handholds for you, without your gorgeous mane just escaping from your grasp?

Just a thought :flowers:

Here it is my attempt, a braided sock bun, I do not think it quite looks like a sock bun, maybe because of the braid, or maybe because I put the stick on the wrong loop, anyways..... it held very well I did a high braid and after bunning it felt very tight, here, some pics with different angles to spare you the spam, I love to do collages, sorries :p

It looks like the right shape to me, so it might be the braid throwing you off? I canít put a stick through mine horizontally because then the first loop is too tight and the second one is too loose, and obviously yours is head-eating and mine isnít.

Ligeia Noire
September 15th, 2018, 10:36 AM
Yeah I think it might be because it is braided. Well, it was a nice experiment.

MusicalSpoons
September 15th, 2018, 12:17 PM
So pretty Ligeia Noire! It really shows off the colour variation on your hair beautifully.

psyc2321 I had trouble with that for a while - the top loop was too tight for anything other than a stick but the the bottom loop was far too loose so it all fell apart. With experimenting, I found I can kind of gently loosen the top loop with my non-holding hand, which makes the bottom loop sliiiightly tighter so it stays together better. It might also help to use 3 fingers instead of 2 for the top loop, though I haven't actually tried that myself.

Ligeia Noire

Thank you. I fiddled with my loops a bit too until it was comfortable enough but still secure.

Wow that one is gorgeous!!!

Thank you! :flower:

Your Spock Bun is lovely  how do you get your buns to stay fairly high and very neat without losing all volume on the top of your head? I can't work out a way to do that; when I try, the weight of the bun pulls everything flat.

Edit: Oops, overlooked the last page originally  Milady, it still looks beautiful. Hopefully with a bit more length it will be more comfortable for you :)

Musical spoons, I sometimes have that problem too. If if the original bun does not feel secure I sometimes reinforce it with spin pins. Three prong forks hold best, of course. If I use sticks I make the flat ones and use two. Occasionally I put a small claw clip at the back if the bun too. Round sticks only seem to work for buns at the back and nape of the neck. The other thing I do is after I secure the bun is pull out some hair to puff up the part around my face. Hope that helps.

I did it!
It's holding with a little claw clip because that's all I had. I'll try with a fork later. I looooove how big and floofy it is! It's no secret I like my buns big and floofy.
I almost couldn't do it thanks to my short fingers.

Got it on the first try. Talk about a head eating bun though! This thing look huge. I love it. No pics because I can't take pics of the back of my head. Next steps: try this with a flexi and see if amish pins will work, too. I barely had enough length though.

It depends on the thickness of your hair (and I guess hand/finger size as well) but I can do it easily with waist length hair that’s on the thin side. This bun slips out after a couple of hours for me though. I need to figure out how to get it tighter.

Thank you. Maybe I can do it, then. My hair is very slippery, though.
