I was just browsing google images for a decent photo of a nice side-swept fringe when I found this:

And I thought "Oooh, that's pretty." Is this something one could re-create oneself?

with A LOT of hairspray o____o it looks like a chignon? but there's a section of hair at the top of the head that makes something like a half dome.
since there's a picture of it I guess it can be re-created but I doubt anyone can do it solely by them self and make it look perfect.

Actually, I think you can achieve that using foam under your hair. That can help you avoid the hair spray need ;)

Aisha25, I think maybe Darkhorse1 may be talking about a hair "rat" as they are called. It's a sort of "form" which may be made of foam, or some other soft material. These were used in early days to achieve the "poof" of some of the Gibson Girl type updos for example. You part the hair and pin in the "rat" near the scalp and then comb the top hair over and you get the lift or height you want....the 'er "poof"! (o:

Sorry that looks photoshopped. But you could do something related.... reminds me of this (http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/9168/tpmpadme59vo.jpg) imitation of Padme's style (http://img157.imageshack.us/img157/3332/battle6zq4.jpg)... a bit. Or I'm crazy... She (http://imaginary-styles.iwarp.com/) does explain how to do it, but the girl has a ton of wavy hair.

you can make your own hair rat from hair you harvest from your brush! There were several threads on this a few months ago.

Basically the way I did it is to collect hair, make a palm-of-hand-sized wad, and wrap it in a light-colored hair net. Then I pin this under my hairdos. I haven't used it in a long time; having lost the first rat I made, I am very wary of having it fall out when I am out in public again!

But it does work, and can achieve such looks.

There are also foam "hair donuts" you can buy for the sock-bun look OR to pad such hairdos. Many 1960s 'dos had hair rats or pads (or falls, or other fake hair) in them; my mom even still had hers when I was a kid...

Yeah, that looks photoshopped to heck. There's no way you can recreate it and make it look THAT smooth... even with lots of hairspray or gel.

It's possible that it's a synthetic hairpiece pinned to the back of the model's head. She might have shoulder-length hair in a French twist underneath that big smooth chignon. It does look a little discontinuous with the rest of her hair, but I don't think it's photo-edited, just artificial.
