View Full Version : Is There Such a Thing as Hair Perfume?

I was curious because my hair doesn't get technically dirty or greasy. I usually wash it because it starts to smell or my scalp sweats and then starts smelling. I don't really want to wash my hair when I don't really need to. I could honestly go about 2 weeks without my hair getting greasy. So, I was thinking that some type of hair perfume would be helpful. I'd prefer to make something myself but I'm open to purchasing as well. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Mods please feel free to move this if needed. I was unsure if I should post it here or on the recipe board.

Hmm my conditioner contains a bit of perfume. I guess you can check out the internet or ask a drug store worker

I use a detangling spray made with essential oils that leaves an amazing smell in my hair until I wash it again. :)

Here’s a current thread on one brand of hair perfume. (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=147169) But if you search Etsy for hair perfume, there are tons of options out there!

In terms of DIY, adding a few drops of essential oil to your mister bottle is a simple solution. There are some absolutely delicious oil mixes out there...Nightblooming’s signature oil blends spring to mind. The scents smell great and new scents are regularly added.

You could mix a bit of fragrant conditioner with water and spray it on :)

Yesstyle.com has hair perfumes.

They are a Korean/Vietnamese/Japanese online store. Absolutely LOVE their products. Here’s a few hair fragrances they have in stock:

Honestly, when your hair starts to smell it needs to be cleaned... If you don't want to wash your lengths you could look into scalp only washes, depending on the length of your hair. :)

There's a ton of them. Many regular perfumes do a hair perfume.

My hair never holds the smell of the products I'm using, so I just use my regular perfumes in my hair. I love having my hair smell nice.

I've seen rosewater being used to keep hair moisturised, maybe it leaves a rosy smell as well...?

Don't know of any perfumes..

I have always used this: https://www.nowfoods.com/essential-oils/

Most are incredibly cheap and the scent is long lasting. I love to use the lemon and orange oils

An offputting smell is usually an indicator of dirt or oil going rancid. Your hair probably needs cleaning.

Perfumes just cover up the odor.

But any perfume, mixed with some water, could be misted on and hide the aroma.

Plenty of perfume oils have just natural ingredients that would do fine on the hair, there's one perfume oil by the brand OliviaCare that I like to put on it after washing because it's basically just jojoba oil and floral essential oils. The Lush solid perfumes also work on the hair without drying it out.

That's how I've done it--if I'm wearing musk, Lady Stetson, Emeraude, whatever, I just spray some on my hair when I go out.

There are many, but if you scalp smells, be sure to check if they are meant for use on scalp at all (or only the lenght). Generally speaking, stuff on hair will not absorb into the bloodstream but stuff on scalp will.

That's a great idea! Mind if I ask what kind of essential oils you use?

Great idea! That's why I didn't want to use my normal body spray on my hair. I'm afaid of dryness.

I've been thinking about scalp only washing recently. But, i think my hair might be a bit short for it. Thanks for your reply.

Rosewater sounds nice. My current body spray hase a rose base so rosewater in my hair would go nicely.

I'll have to use some of these suggestions as well. I don't have an issue with stretching washing, but my hair is like a sponge to environmental smells. Especially after coming in from outside. It's been like that my whole life, I remember my sister always saying she could smell the wind on me.

I’ve tried a bunch, Aveda (kind of oily), Biolage Aloe Moisture Mist (technically not a hair perfume, but smells great and gives hair a boost), Yves Rocher, homemade ones from Etsy, etc. Some contain alcohol, some don’t.

I agree that ideally washing more might be best, but if you don’t want to do that, you might want to check out citrus essential oils for their antifungal/ antimicrobial properties. My favorite is lemon. You just use a base of purified or distilled water, a little bit of witch hazel (1 -2 TBSP, they even make a lemon one) to “hold” and distribute the essential oil, and about 30 drops of essential oil (per 4 ounce bottle). Then you can just shake and spray it on your scalp and hair. I keep mine in the fridge, it makes it extra refreshing :)

There are tons of them here in Brazil(in hair mist form), but honestly I much prefer sticking to essential oils. I am known for being a bit of a hippie though.

I'll just mix a few drops with some grapeseed oil and apply it to my dry hair. My favourites are benzoin, lavender, geranium, and pitangueira/brazilian cherry tree.

Bonus points to oils + EOs bc they're alcohol-free and double as hair treatments

And mixing the essential oils in carrier oils make the scent last longer. If you mix them with water or try to apply them dry, they'll just evaporate in a few hours, but with the carrier oil base they'll be fragrant for longer and easier to spread on the hair.

I use Black Phoenix Trading Post hair glosses. I must have at least 30 different scents. Love the stuff!
Here are the ones that are currently in their catalog. They also come out with special editions during the holidays and at different times during the year. Oh, and I keep them in a sealed plastic container in the fridge between uses to make them last.

Honestly, I wouldn't. It's unlikely to completely cover up the smell... you might just smell like perfume and sweat. Also, hair can really trap scents, as I've found out the hard way when when I used to wear essential oils in my hair and had people comment on my "perfume" even though I'd washed my hair once or twice since the last application, and people will complain if your hair smells too strongly, even if it's a nice smell. And if your hair smells like sweat, you'd probably have to use a lot of perfume to drown it out.

When it comes to essential oils especially, remember that even one drop has staying power and a strong smell, and you will stop smelling it pretty quickly and be completely perplexed when someone tells you that you should stop wearing that strong "perfume." Oh yes, I have found that out the hard way too, had no idea I was so offensive to people but they seemed to get really annoyed.

I've also found out the hard way exactly how bad sweaty hair can smell and how hard it is to get that smell out even if you wash right after sweating. It was the only thing I hated about living in Thailand, the fact that my head would sweat every day (after outdoor workouts my hair would be damp to my shoulders) and it would REEK like no other, and even after a really thorough wash I could still smell it. It's probably best just to wash, because the smell probably only gets worse the longer it sits. It's annoying to have to wash often, but sometimes you just have to. (Yes, I have soooo been there and done that; I'm used to only having to wash once a week in the U.S. and going to washing 3-4 times a week sucked, but the smell sucked worse.)

Yes, I have a lot of warnings based on personal experience. :)

I love having my hair smell nice and since I use non scented shampoos I like to either use a couple of drops of essential oils ( I like lavander, peppermint, rosemary, rose, tangerine or some woody smells) or I have a vanilla infused oil which works really well because it smells good but it also protects my hair and works a bit like a leave in. I will 100% try the rose water trick tho, sounds amazing and I love it for my face already!

Absolutely. It's time to wash your hair. I would say two weeks in and your hair starts to smell becomes an issue of hygiene.

Has anyone tried mixing in some scents/hair perfume with a reliable unscented conditioner? Does that have the same effect as a pre-perfumed conditioner? Sometimes I spray Bath and Body Works body mists on my length but I don't know how well the scent actually holds. Scents seem to hold best on wet hair for me

Hey man-- good question. I just want to say that this thread has given me a lot of useful info I didn't know I needed. :)

As for me, I just put peppermint essential oil in my shampoo. One (admittedly not cross-referenced) study from Korea said that there was a correlation between application of peppermint and increased rate of hair growth. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4289931/ I mean, best case scenario, it works... worst case scenario, it doesn't work and I still smell delightful anyways
