Wraps as a protective style?

Saw a lady at the grocery store this morning wearing one of those classic paisley handkerchiefs as a hair wrap. We chatted for a few seconds about my long hair, and she said wearing a wrap helps keep her hair long. I had honestly never thought about it before, and now I'm a little curious to try it as a protective style! From the few wisps I could see, it looked like her hair was similar to my hairtype.

My only concerns are: (1) tension and friction around the hairline or wherever the tie might be tight and (2) moisture being trapped near the scalp - I am prone to seborrheic dermatitis when this happens

So my question to you all is - have you ever heard of this or tried it? What was the result?

I just wore one yesterday while I was out walking in the summer heat. I can say it definitely keeps moisture in if you will be in a sweaty situation. As for the tension, I kept mine a little loose and used two pins on the sides to keep it fixed to my head.

Wrapping the hair is extremely common with women who have hairtypes such as mine.

I used to wrap my hair every night back in highschool to keep my hair straight. It’s great for protecting the hair. If you’re concerned with too much moisture you can always find wraps that don’t cover the entire head, or just fold a scarf or handkerchief in half, so evaporation can still do its thing, and air out your scalp.


They have Velcro head wraps, so you don’t have to worry about tying a knot. Just make sure no hairs get caught in them.

But wraps as protective styles are extremely common.

If you have SD, I would not "bind" the hair tightly to the scalp at all.

I have SD, and do wear my hair in daily buns, and that has never been an issue, but underneath a piece of cloth (nice and warm/hot) and the hair wrapped up over the entire surface of the scalp? I'm unsure.

This is how I straighten and dry my hair. I usually wear it overnight and then in the morning wrap it the other direction. I make a “ cap” out of a pair of silk pantyhose and secure it with a cotton headband. I’ve been doing it fir about 8 years.

I had a bun today that was fastened with a hairstick and I ended up at some point wrapping my headscarf over the bun to cover it.

I can see covering the hair being good to prevent the dryness that always accompanies winter weather for me. And, I certainly won't be sweating under there!

I often wear my hair like this at home and at work to protect my hair.

I own a few different hair scarfs now and am always looking for more at second hand stores. Silk is the coolest to wear in the summer.

I’ve personally always called it a “Head Wrap”, if it’s of different material or tied down in a certain pattern, or a “Head scarf”, if it’s a scarf. But Hair covering works too. I’d know what you meant either way lol.

Your technique is very interesting! Could you please expand a little more on it? Do you wrap your hair all around your head and then put the "cap" on? And why to wrap it the other direction?

I just got a good deal for a few large silk scarves on Amazon to wear to church and to wear on cooler days. I only know how to tie these under my chin or behind my head. I often see women on the bus with artistic hair wraps, maybe I can learn how they do this.

I buy buffs on ebay for about $1 each. They are soft "tubes" of material. I wear them a lot because they contain my hair comfortably with no damage. They are against our dress code at work since they resemble a hat, but I wear them all of the time at home and to sleep in. Also, my husband and I both drive convertibles and they are a must when the top is down, which is a lot in the warm months.

Thank you! I got four off Amazon, two "like silk", and two silk. I don't plan on wearing them out - I'm brown skinned, and the current political climate here is unlikely to be friendly towards head coverings - but I do plan on wearing them at home, and possibly to sleep.

Here it's tolerated to wear head coverings, but I've gotten some comments at work like "what the f*** are you wearing". I just joke and say that "I didn't brush my hair today" (thought it's often true), or "I'm becoming a real cleaner" (I clean for a living in my own company) and then people just let it go.

I've also gotten some compliments from older women.

My older customers have gotten used to it now, so they don't even think about it anymore (not even the rude ones).

I also bought a new scarf at a second hand store today :)
