View Full Version : Wraps as a protective style?

Saw a lady at the grocery store this morning wearing one of those classic paisley handkerchiefs as a hair wrap. We chatted for a few seconds about my long hair, and she said wearing a wrap helps keep her hair long. I had honestly never thought about it before, and now I'm a little curious to try it as a protective style! From the few wisps I could see, it looked like her hair was similar to my hairtype.

My only concerns are: (1) tension and friction around the hairline or wherever the tie might be tight and (2) moisture being trapped near the scalp - I am prone to seborrheic dermatitis when this happens

So my question to you all is - have you ever heard of this or tried it? What was the result?

I just wore one yesterday while I was out walking in the summer heat. I can say it definitely keeps moisture in if you will be in a sweaty situation. As for the tension, I kept mine a little loose and used two pins on the sides to keep it fixed to my head.

Wrapping the hair is extremely common with women who have hairtypes such as mine.

I used to wrap my hair every night back in highschool to keep my hair straight. It’s great for protecting the hair. If you’re concerned with too much moisture you can always find wraps that don’t cover the entire head, or just fold a scarf or handkerchief in half, so evaporation can still do its thing, and air out your scalp.

They have Velcro head wraps, so you don’t have to worry about tying a knot. Just make sure no hairs get caught in them.

But wraps as protective styles are extremely common.

If you have SD, I would not "bind" the hair tightly to the scalp at all.

I have SD, and do wear my hair in daily buns, and that has never been an issue, but underneath a piece of cloth (nice and warm/hot) and the hair wrapped up over the entire surface of the scalp? I'm unsure.

You could try it. Let us know how it goes! :D

This is how I straighten and dry my hair. I usually wear it overnight and then in the morning wrap it the other direction. I make a “ cap” out of a pair of silk pantyhose and secure it with a cotton headband. I’ve been doing it fir about 8 years.

Whenever I wear one I never wrap my hair around my head. I keep it in a bun. Maybe I didn't understand the question. I just thought the wrap was the cloth not actually wrapping the hair as well.

I had a bun today that was fastened with a hairstick and I ended up at some point wrapping my headscarf over the bun to cover it.
I propably didn't understand the question either. :D

That makes sense.

The words “wrap”, and “wrapping”, have different schematics for them. And it’s unique from culture to culture.

Wearing a head wrap would be what I think you meant. “A Wrap”, the way I read it, is when you brush your hair around your head and secure it with a scarf or Velcro piece. Same goes for the term “wrapping” your hair.

Oh goodness, OK. My apologies if I bungled the term, it's a new concept for me. I did mean just wrapping a cloth around your hair, not necessarily wrapping the hair itself. Just out of curiosity, what would you call that? A hair covering maybe?

And thanks everyone for the responses! Based on your info, I think my plan at this point is to get my technique down now and then implement it in the winter. I can see covering the hair being good to prevent the dryness that always accompanies winter weather for me. And, I certainly won't be sweating under there!

I often wear my hair like this at home and at work to protect my hair.

I own a few different hair scarfs now and am always looking for more at second hand stores. Silk is the coolest to wear in the summer.

I’ve personally always called it a “Head Wrap”, if it’s of different material or tied down in a certain pattern, or a “Head scarf”, if it’s a scarf. But Hair covering works too. I’d know what you meant either way lol.

Your technique is very interesting! Could you please expand a little more on it? Do you wrap your hair all around your head and then put the "cap" on? And why to wrap it the other direction?
Thank you!:p

TatsuOni, that's what I always understood a hair wrap to be, we call them hair scarves or they are called babushkas also. You tied your scarf so creatively, I wish I knew how.

I just got a good deal for a few large silk scarves on Amazon to wear to church and to wear on cooler days. I only know how to tie these under my chin or behind my head. I often see women on the bus with artistic hair wraps, maybe I can learn how they do this.

I can post picture some day on how I do it. I use regular square scarves.

Fold it like this.

https://cdn3.cdnme.se/1263465/9-3/2_5b51b315ddf2b32e8a672d64.jpg
Put the "middle piece" over your bun.

https://cdn1.cdnme.se/1263465/9-3/3_5b51b60fddf2b32e75b56fe8.jpg
Cross the "side pieces" over the middle piece.

https://cdn3.cdnme.se/1263465/9-3/4_5b51b8f82a6b2289ec4ffc3d.jpg
Twist the middle section with one of the side sections.

https://cdn1.cdnme.se/1263465/9-3/5_5b51b928ddf2b32e960a8308.jpg
Put all of the pieces on top of your bun.

https://cdn1.cdnme.se/1263465/9-3/6_5b51b9622a6b228a16e6bf41.jpg
Tie it. You can now choose to leave the ends loose or tuck them in under your scarf.

I'm throwing in an other version that I wear when I want to hide my greasy roots or protect my scalp, while still wanting to show of my bun and/or hair toys.

https://cdn1.cdnme.se/1263465/9-3/7_5b51b9e6e087c3242cc0af97.jpg
Fold the scarf the same way.

https://cdn1.cdnme.se/1263465/9-3/8_5b51ba5eddf2b32e960a8322.jpg
Put the middlesection "on the side" of your bun.

Cross the side sections under the bun and twist the middle section with one of the side sections.

https://cdn1.cdnme.se/1263465/9-3/9_5b51bb12e087c3241b951e48.jpg
Tie it above your bun.

You gave great explanations, and the pictures definitely helped. I will try this out. The weather has been mostly HOT here in North Eastern USA, but I will try this out soon anyway

I buy buffs on ebay for about $1 each. They are soft "tubes" of material. I wear them a lot because they contain my hair comfortably with no damage. They are against our dress code at work since they resemble a hat, but I wear them all of the time at home and to sleep in. Also, my husband and I both drive convertibles and they are a must when the top is down, which is a lot in the warm months.

What are the dimensions of the scarves you use? I'm interested in buying some but I'm not sure of sizing.

65x65 cm or 25,5x25,5 inches. I'd say that, that size or bigger works.

Thank you! I got four off Amazon, two "like silk", and two silk. I don't plan on wearing them out - I'm brown skinned, and the current political climate here is unlikely to be friendly towards head coverings - but I do plan on wearing them at home, and possibly to sleep.

I'm sorry that racism/religious intolerance is being legitimized as "political" where you're from.

TatsuOni great tutorials! I like to cover my hair to work (dust and old papers), definitely going to use second method. Thanks for sharing!

I use my buff too, mostly as a headband, it keep my ears warm (even in hot days a bit of wind can cause pain, when my hair is up). Tried to sleep in it once, it was ok, maybe a bit too warm.

About political climate - here where I live head covering is also not the best thing to do, you can get funny looks(at best) from some more radical people - once when I went out for a run with a buff on my head and neck (looking like a worm, but a cozy worm :D) some half-brained guard from our block asked with open suspicion "yyy...are you cold?" - it was this type of questiom "better be cold, because I don't like certain religion". It's sad that you can be hurt for wearing something on your head.

I'm happy to see that people like it :)

Here it's tolerated to wear head coverings, but I've gotten some comments at work like "what the f*** are you wearing". I just joke and say that "I didn't brush my hair today" (thought it's often true), or "I'm becoming a real cleaner" (I clean for a living in my own company) and then people just let it go.

I've also gotten some compliments from older women.

My older customers have gotten used to it now, so they don't even think about it anymore (not even the rude ones).

I also bought a new scarf at a second hand store today :)
