Basically, this is a French braid used as an anchor for a vertical hair stick with the length of the braid wrapped behind the stick to form bun. A second stick or pins can be used to secure the ends.

This month pushed us over the character limit for the listing of all Style of the Month threads and I had to split them up into two parts! I count 99 months. We have been doing a Style of the Month since 2010, with very little accidental duplication of styles.

This has always been one of my favorite hairstyles and inspiration for growing longer, but even at waist length I wasn't close to being able to do it.

Looking forward to seeing others do it, though!! :blossom:

Oh I have never seen that style. And me thinking I knew about all Torrins styles ah ah. I will try to give it a shot. Even though it is a torture to French braid with my tangly hair.

One of my favourites! I often do a dutch braid instead of a french braid because I like the look a bit better. I'm just barely long enough to do this style though. XD

Ok first thing I tried this morning, it looks pretty but I do not know if it is because I suck at French braiding or because the bun covers it but I do not see the sections or much of my arduous French braiding, it is just all a bun  but hey I liked it a lot, going to leave it all day and I fancy the sticks like this quite a lot, looks more harmonious.

I've never seen this one before!
I'll try it in the next few days, probably sunday, more time then.
But I suck at french braiding, my ends always get tangled while braiding like this.

Beautifully done Ligeia and Amarylis and littlestarface

So beautiful Amaryllis!
I have to confess I love this bun more than my usual braided bun. My ends are secure. The bun is high up so you can see the braid from the front like a crown. You pretty much just need one stick if you want. The sticks do not bother me and look better like this and the French braiding gives it way more gripe therefore it does not move. I am wearing it today again. The only catch compared to a simple braided bun is that French braiding takes more time as my hair is difficult to separate but I am learning how to make it faster. I've tried some buns but this is the second one i can really wear to work and it holds throughout the day. Win.

I love both the single and double stick versions posted so far -- littlestarface, Ligeia, and Amaryllis. I think this bun is such a great way to show off a pretty stick... something about it being vertical really appeals to me.

This is one of my favourite buns and I wear it a lot. I especially like it because I can french braid my hair at home, then ride my bike to my office (I generally bike commute), then put it up when I get to my office without a mirror. This picture is of a more intricate version I did a while ago. When the last season GoT promos came out I thought Denarys was wearing her hair in a bun like this, which I thought was very cool, but then it turned out to be something much less practical of course! I'm sure I'll wear it again before the month is out though...

That's so pretty, hobbitlocks!

Anybody have any tips for me? I didn't wear it very long yesterday because I had wrapped the braid so tightly around the stick that it hurt.
If I wrap it looser... it won't stay, will it?
I could wrap it looser and then use pins, but part of the appeal to me is just one stick and no need to mess with pins.

This bun is so pretty! I just tried it with only one stick, and I quite like it. No pictures because it was my first time French braiding, and it's just awful xD Hopefully I'll get better at it soon.

Yeah I do not need the second stick, I just add it for decoration but my hair is kind of coarse so it holds very well, I also start it pretty high so you can see the braid from the front kind of like a crown so I guess being high helps secure it better, I like it tight but not that tight that it pulls on your hairline.... I have to say I have been wearing it every single day since I have tried and it holds even better than my braided bun, it is amazing. I believe it is due to the knots of the french braid give it some kind of anchor and traction. I will have to try with a dutch braid next.

Oh yes I feel you, but I take my time doing it and it is not perfect but it is for a bun so it hides it ;)

It was a hassle to frenchbraid my hair, the ends got really tangled.
So I doubt I will do this updo again.

Definitely not long enough for this, but it is gorgeous. :agape:

Amazing buns, everyone! Oh, and I was wondering, does the end/tassel start to fall out or become untucked throughout the day? Or does it depend on blunt/tapered ends?

Mine didnt fall out until I layed on it at night other than that mine stayed up the whole day and I didn't use any other pin in my hair than that stick.

Thank you! I have relatively slippery/fine hair, and I need to pin the tail if I do this with a single stick. I can usually just use one pin though if I place it right, so I don't mind it. Or if I use the second stick to catch the tail under the outer braid loop (I don't know if that made sense at all... it's so hard to describe these things!), then I don't need a pin. I have a bit of taper at my ends though, so that probably makes it easier than if I had blunt ends.

I tucked my ends in one of the bumps of my dutch braid like threading it but my ends are so thin so it was easy.

Thank you all for the inspiration. I, finally, successfully did a french braid with the bumps showing and this style works for me! However, my hair is too slick/thin/whatever for a stick to hold it. I used spin pins and it's lovely.

I have never in my life French braided before, but I'm trying to wear my hair up more, so I thought I'd give these styles a chance.

Before wrapping, the braid was truly awful. The bun mostly hid it. It's not the prettiest thing, but it's secure and comfortable for doing housework this evening. Now I must practice braiding before I try this again.

I have no idea where I got the sticks! I've had them since I was in high school I think, so probably Claire's or something, lol!! It's probably been 15 years or so.

I tried this today. I do not have hair long enough for it but, figured what the hey. It stayed in all day while cleaning the garage. Itís very, very, I repeat very secure.

Itís much more comfortable than tucking my French braid under. I completely forgot that I had my hair in anything impressive today.

Brand new to the forum so I have to figure out how to post a picture.

Beautiful buns everyone! They all look stunning.

My hair isnít long enough for this style, but add a paranda and we are good to go! I first attempted this a few days ago but either the braid wasnít the right tension or the stick wasnít placed right and it kept pulling at my scalp. Because of this, I had pretty much decided I didnít like it and would stick with a plain braided bun. However, I decided to try it again yesterday and it was much better! It held with just the one hair stick and paranda all day at work. Itís not going to be my go to style because it takes a little longer than I like for my everyday, get it out of the way styles, but when I want something different, this definitely going to be an option.

This did not turn out great due to both my inexperience with hairsticks and the fact that my hair is way to short for this hairdo in comparison to thickness - one side looks perfect the other is mainly tassel.
