I wanted to do the top knot hairstyle with the lower part (sides head and nape) shaved, I read that the minimum length of the hair should be 6 inches, the question is how do I measure the length?

I don't think there's a minimum length. It all depends on the thickness of your hair. With shaved bits, I'm sure you could do a bun quite fast. How long is your hair?

Welcome to LHC! :waving:

My question for you is: do you really want a momentarily trendy and very high-maintenance hair style? Or, would you rather have a timeless hair style that is easy to maintain?

Nearly everyone here opts for the latter, i.e. all-around long hair with any trimming done only at the ends. Long-haired people settle into this style because it is maintainable over time (years).

If one feels a need for something new, one can always try a new bun or hair toy. :)

I know this isn't the answer you expected, but when it comes to long hair, one needs to plan a few years ahead.

@lapushka is the doubt, not how the length is measured @Ed Until last July for 14 years I had long hair up to half back, then cut to almost zero

One thing that has changed in the last few years is that men can wear buns and hair toys without being perceived as weird. That way, one can go from long hair to effectively short hair and back nearly instantaneously.

in any case how do I measure the length?

EdG

6 inches is almost certainly the length of the longest strands. Just measure one. :)

Often it is easiest to measure the length of a strand after it has shedded.

There is another method of measuring hair length from the forehead over the top of the head and down the back. This method is used on this board, but it does not measure true hair length.

Lean forward, and try to collect all the hair you want to keep together at the point where you want the top knot to be. If it all collects together without falling away, happy days. If not, wait for more length

I brush all my hair back so I have no part and then measure from the middle of my hairline down my back.

Unfortunately Tinypic and PhotoBucket have not updated their sites and won't work here. I added just the link for you, but my browser can't open it either.

Try using something like Imjur or Flickr, those behave a bit better. Sorry about that!

Oh, you for sure can't wear a bun right now!

That is going to take at least 1-2 years, more on the side of 2, I think.

Looks a bit short to me, could be wrong though

I would give it a years worth of growth. That is if your hair growth is average at 1/2 inches a month (6 inches in a year).

To measure. I would just take the end of the measuring tape, place it directly on your scalp and measure up, seems like you have some shorter hairs and longer hairs around the top crown so do a few measures around.

Your question is flawed but I'll start this response by answering it.

Measure your hair by measuring it. Take a ruler, stand it against your scalp sticking straight out, and record the length of the hairs.

But the reason your question is wrong is this...six inches is a good rule of thumb but what you want to achieve is the hairs gathering in the middle and meeting up with enough extra to make the actual bun. And that length is dependent on the actual size of your head.

The best way to determine whether you can do it is to try...the real milestones are when we can each do those hairstyles.

Worry less about the measurement in inches and...try it. You might be surprised what you're able to achieve.

And in the meantime, consider twisting and braiding it. Great interim styles.

You just have to measure from the front line of your hair to the point where the bun will be placed (as your fringe will need to be the longest part of all your hair to achieve the look). So basically as long as the top of your head is haha, i would say 20cm (8 inches).

You definitely need more length. You will be in good company here. :)

Of course, we may try to talk you out of going for that ghastly half-long/half-short style. ;)

Nah, Ed. You're awesome. I'm just teasing you. Everyone has different tastes in hair. Never be afraid to say yours. You appear to be very even toned and balanced with your replies. I feel comfortable enough to pick at you. I should have specified I was kidding. I apologise if I pricked feelings.

Not trying to be rude, but I hate that hairstyle. What's wrong with just having a little bun? The shaved sides are just so stupidly high maintenance and trendy....ugh. *shudder*

It looks like you have at least 8 months of growth before you can start to collect the hair into a tiny ponytail on top of your head.

Have you thought about buying a hairpiece? The sell fake too man knots. I enjoy fake ponies and buns myself.

If I miss 8 months of growth would mean that the current length is about 3-4 inches or 7-8 cm? To the eye seemed longer ... or I'm wrong ... tonight I measure better

Just keep trying to make your bun. It often happens that one day you can't, then the next day you can.

How do you measure? Try to do a top-knot. When you can, it's long enough. :) (There's no magic formula of "X length is long enough." It depends on how thick your hair is, where you want to place the knot, etc.)

Same thing can be said about long hair. But who really cares, at the end of the day it is just hair and if someone wants a trendy style and willing to do the upkeep that is their personal choice.

As someone who wore a very severe flattop and tightened it up every three days, I've been committed to high maintenance.

It depends on your mindset. Maintenance can be a burden or it can be a delight. It's all in how you perceive it.
