View Full Version : Hair up in old photos - Inspiration and ideas to try

I wanted to start a thread about ladies wearing her hair up in old photos after being at the Sorolla's museum with my mum the other day. There I saw, along with all the Sorolla's paintings, some amazing photos showing women (esp his wife) with her hair up in the 10's and 20's.
So I thought, why not to take some pics for the LHCers? it might inspire someone's updos, and in any case I know we all heavily enjoy seeing hair related pictures :) it would be great too if you'd share other old pics that you might found showing hairstyles! :D
So, the reason why you are reading all of it: PICS!

And an extra: one of the Sorolla's painting, one of the thousands of portraits that he painted of his wife (with her hair up of course):
https://i.imgur.com/EbtX5qq.jpg
PS - A bit off topic: The Sorolla's museum is a little museum only dedicated to the painter Sorolla (you can peep his work here, (https://www.google.es/search?rlz=1C5CHFA_enES787ES787&biw=1224&bih=668&tbm=isch&sa=1&ei=06wkW5abF8SWgAbj64TADA&q=joaquin+sorolla+obras&oq=joaquin+sorolla+obras&gs_l=img.3..0l2j0i30k1l3.3681.5382.0.5623.7.4.1.2. 3.0.151.409.3j1.4.0....0...1c.1.64.img..0.6.353... 0i8i30k1.0.kV__YzGK2h8) to me he's the master of the summer light) that is located in Madrid. It's a really special museum because Sorolla himself donated his own house to be a museum after his death; it has lots of paintings, along with old photographs, books, ceramics that he collected, very special furniture, his stuff... He was famous and rich when he was alive, and also was a happy person deeply in love with his wife and so dedicated to his art. The house is in the center of Madrid, that nowadays is a quite busy city, but when you enter there it's like a magical place full of peace: got a big garden with fonts, sculptures... And the house is simply precious, also you could feel that this house was full of love long ago. If you ever go to Madrid, I highly recommend going there -it's also very cheap compared to other museums, just 3€ (4$).
I hope you all enjoyed those old pics as much as I did :cheer: I'd love to see pics you'd like to share! Or if you try some of the styles here, you can share them here too :D

It's not easy to find pics of the buns! Only here at LHC do we focus on "back of the head shots". :)
Thank you for sharing the pictures - sure wish we could have seen that comb Sorolla's wife had in her hair... A good closeup of that would have been a treat.

I have an old picture of my grandad's parents. She was from money and had nice pictures made (could afford it). I don't know how she wears her hair, but it is in an elaborate updo of some sort. And gorgeous, with pearls and long clothes (corsetted).

Here's and old photograph. You can't see the woman's updo though, but I like old photos so I thought I'd share it.
It's a picture I took of a picture my mother-in-law showed me, it's from her family. A friend of mine wanted to make prints of old photos and put them up to her gallery, so I tried to find her some she could use.

These are my grandparents from my mother's side. The center parting of hair is religious tradition. I bet there's a bun of some sort, maybe braided. My grandmother's hair was long and dark even at old age. She is an inspiration to me. :)

The other day my Mum said my bun looked like a regency period hairstyle so I look them up and found this site (https://janeaustensworld.wordpress.com/tag/regency-hairstyle/) which has loads of paintings - it's just a shame most of them are from the front, as said above "only on LHC do we focus on the back of the head!

These are styles from the 1930s-1970s. Around the Civil Right movement.

Really want to try out this intricate beaded style. It’s beautiful. This style is more of the 80s hip hop type.

These are ancient/tribal hairstyles that I’m pretty sure I can pull off. Don’t know how long they will last, but the fluffier the better it seems

Some of these styles I probably wouldn’t be able to do without some type of loc gel, or a holding spray, but they’re so cool and unique

All these beautiful hairstyles. I went look into my grandmothers' photos, even in the 30s they had short hair XD. I'm some kind of an anomaly. Even my mother only had long hair when she was in Nigeria with CUSO since she didn't want to worry about trying to maintain a short style. It was cut into a pageboy style within weeks of her coming back to Canada.

Pretty sure I've posted this photo of my great grandmother before on LHC. I've always wanted to try to replicate her style, but think I'd need a hair rat of some sort.

Whoa....some are impressive....and others so elegant
My family tree doesn't go back far; I don't even know who my great grandmothers were....no pics or info was passed on, but both my grandmothers from Canada had their hair styled short and curled

That's a lovely photo of your grandmother:) And it shows her hair style quite well :) I have one of my grandmother, who had at-least-Classic hair. It only shows a little of how she wore her hair but I love the photo anyway, and I have a tortoiseshell hair comb she used to own, too. It's a treasure for me :) I found it quite easy to copy the way I think she would have done it.

I found this picture of my grandma. I think she has a bun in the back where all the flowers are and I find very cute the curly fringe ;) If someone has curly hair, they could try it for a festival!

Here in Spain my grandmothers always wore their hair in a bun covered by a handkerchief, it was normal in the villages, so I do not have photos of them young women with their hair uncovered, the ones I already have are older and have their hair very short.
