Post Pictures of Your Beautiful 2-2.5" circumferance Hair!

Hey All! I'm growing out my hair (currently between chin and shoulder length). I've always been discouraged from growing out my hair because my hair circumferance is generally 2-2.5 inches (maybe 3" on my very best day). I see a lot of photos of people with gorgeous hair but they always have 3-5 inch ponytail circumferences. I would love to see photos of people's hair with smaller circumferences as inspiration for what my hair could look like as it grows out. Thanks in advance!

Edit: Also, I have curly hair and because my hair is fine, it loves being dried with a diffuser (otherwise it looks limp) and using the devacurl products (low-poo 1-2x per week, no poo 1x per week, condition frequently, and devacurl styling cream and gel). If you have curly hair, would love to know your haircare and styling routine.

I am lower than average at 2.5 inches. You should never feel discouraged about your hair because it isn't really thick. There are many people here that have around 2.5 and below with Amazing hair.

One good thing about less thickness is you can do many different buns without the extra length!

My circumference is 3.35" and my braid looks nowhere near as lovely as his, because of my dramatic taper... thin is not a bad thing! :)

I know it could be less and my hair looks ok - just can’t wait until the last 4 inches thicken up.
Because my hair is 2.5 at the nape but much much smaller at the end. Maybe .25” at best :(

My circumference is pretty exactly 2,5". Naturally my hair is stick straight, but there's always some wawes from keeping it tied up almost all the time.

I love this thread! My circumference is 2.5” and I’m quite self conscious about it sometimes, but looking at these photos I can see how beautiful everyone’s hair is so it makes me worry less about mine.

Lithostoic you said recently that my hair texture looks similar to yours, and your photos are really inspirational for me.

I especially love the photos of plaits (braids) because that’s something a lot of us worry about. Again, this thread shows that we should give ourselves a break!

My taper is killing me.
Once my layers grown, I am sure I will feel much better about my hair.
I recently went on a hike somewhere by a very nice lake. There was a woman with HL hair.
Her hair looked so gorgeous!
It was very thick, straight and healthy and you could not pass by without noticing it. She was taking a few selfies.
My hair was bunned. I put it down right away, but it felt almost weightless as if it was not there.
This was the exact sensation: do I still have some hair left? Can someone notice I have WL hair?
I know it sounds funny, I know I have hair, but it's just not like "for real" , similar to what that woman had.
Mine feels more like a joke compared to hers.

Definitely! I tend to observe overall condition more than length at all, although I will say, being around 2.5 circumference myself, I notice when I see people with similar hair thickness out in the world who are obviously taking care of it and enjoying it for its own great qualities! I think partly this comes from having been told the usual message of "you have thin hair so you should keep it short". Short, long, in between, it can work at any length just as well as really thick hair!

My hair is extremely versatile. On one had, in this picture my hair is blow dried. It can mimic a circumference of up to 6 inches when fully brushed out and allowed to fluff up.

On the other hand, if my hair is weighed down a lot, or even 50% damp it can compress all the way down to 2 inches.

So I have no idea where I can classify my hair in circumference thickness, but I enjoy how it can be on both sides of the spectrum.

Don't get discouraged! If I had one piece of advice for myself when I first started here, it would be to stop comparing your hair to other people's hair. Your hair is yours. It's not other people's, so don't expect it to act like other people's. I became pretty discouraged when I first measured my ponytail circumference to find it was a mere 2". I always knew my hair was fine but wasn't too focused on its thickness until I started paying attention to this metric. I'd personally be happy if we did away with measuring ponytail circumference altogether. I will point out that I was trying to wear my hair straight a lot when I first got depressed about this whole thing. AutobotsAttack brings up a pretty good point. I've read a lot of places that hair with curly texture has a tendency to be fine and therefore look tiny and shrunken down when straight, wet, or compressed for any reason.

This thread is definitely inspirational. My hair varies from 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 depending on the weather and where in the wash cycle I am. I also have considerable taper with my super fine hair suffering from natural layers from breakage, particularly the canopy. I’m beginning to think it’s never going to get to waistlength and often get disheartened when I see gorgeous long thick hair. It’s so uplifting to see such gorgeous hair on this thread that is on the thinner side of normal thickness.

Mine actually is a bit of a U shape RSunny. I find it makes the waves fall better. I think a V would leave the longest part too thin for my liking. The shape is probably a bit more noticeable in this picture.

Lucid, how do you make those super pretty curls on the end of the length?

They are toilet paper curls. I divide my hair in two, and curl the hair up to my shoulder length, but only the ends stay curled. I think you would have to split your hair in four to get the same result with your thickness. When I curl the braid tassle I braid the hair halfway down, then curl the rest in one go, and then I redo the braid the morning after.

They are super straggly. 2.5" circumference; thinned out dramatically from when I joined here in 2007 (I was pushing 4"!). Age and hormones/thyroid issues have hit me hard the last decade. But I'm trying to learn to at least like what I have left.

You're not alone. I've seen several other people post about how thin their ends are; some bemoan the fact theirs are no thicker than a pencil - personally I'd love for my ends even to be that thick! They're maybe half a pencil's worth? But with time and patience you'll get there, don't worry - and in the meantime, it is very clear that waves give the illusion of more hair anyway (((hugs)))

Yes, agreed about waves/wurls/curls. I almost always wear my hair, when I'm wearing it down, wavy. It appears at least double as voluminous. Also for some reason my naturally straight hair drives me crazy when it's down...it's like, because it's so straight, it falls more in my face? IDK.

Today I'm wearing my hair down (it will probably go up soon) with some glorious cinnabun waves.

Ah, those are the perfect days for forgetting about it and putting it up :flower: have to say though, true 1a hair is relatively rare and really very beautiful; perhaps on the days you feel better about your hair that's one of the things you can enjoy about it :)

Mine, too! When I went cone-free, all of a sudden I had waves. :) Aside from that, my scalp really dislikes sulphates and seems to get really dry when I use them.

So true. Honestly I never thought twice about my thickness before joining here and learning about hair stats. I always thought my hair was normal, I mean I knew I didn't have extremely thick hair but never thought I was lacking until I read 2.5 is considered less than average and thin. I was upset at first but luckily I went back to my old train of thought. If it didn't bother me then, why the heck should it bother me now.

I do wear my hair up a lot, and any wawe it helps to create brings some fullness. I was very sure I'm 1a, but now I've noticed some new growth or taper, I'm not sure what these shorter hairs are, that sort of curl up from the rest of my hair. Does that send me away from 1a? Maybe I should do a texture study...

I had always thought I had somewhat thick hair. When I was a child my staylists would always thin my hair when I cut it shorter. When I got older it seemed more difficult to make my hair look full while growing out, so maybe my hair thinned with age or as my head got bigger it appeared thinner. Then I moved to Miami and a stylist told me my hair was thin and fine. Of course in Miami, in particular most Latina women, have gotgeously thick hair. One of my best friends can barely fit her hair in a ponytail holder. After I saw that stylist, who sucked by the way, I was always so self conscious and every time I’d try growing my hair out, it just felt futile. It’s so lovely to see other’s hair that is similar in thickness to mine have success growing to BSL, waist and beyond. Thank you!

Well, it looks like this right after I wash but a few days after, it looks different. When it's too oily I can't wear it down (I oil my ends daily)
feels like my hair is not covering all my back and front if you know what I mean. If I want some pieces in front there's no much hair left to cover my back.
When you see thick hair you can surely say it covers all the back and front.

Well, it looks like this right after I wash but a few days after, it looks different. When it's too oily I can't wear it down (I oil my ends daily)
feels like my hair is not covering all my back and front if you know what I mean. If I want some pieces in front there's no much hair left to cover my back.
When you see thick hair you can surely say it covers all the back and front.

I think it likely takes VERY thick hair to adequately have hair coverage in both in the front and in the back. When I see a lot of people with, what I consider, thick hair and they bring their hair to the front, they often split it down the middle in the back and bring each side forward. I think you're hair looks great and the thinner parts are the fairytale hemline. If appearance of thickness was more important than length you could trim the ends up a bit and make a more U shaped hemline which would help that appearance. But the length, right up to a bit below your bra strap, looks very well filled in and has excellent coverage. :)

lithostoic A bit late, but yes, it's definitely the waves. They poof, create space between strands and make it look like people have a bunch of hair. It happens to me, then you see it in a braid or ponytail and realise it's the same thickness, it just poofs where it's not compressed while straight hair seems to compress always. Even when my hair is rather straight after bunning it is different than naturally straight hair. Don't think too much about it. You have pretty hair, and I like your colour very much. Also, I bet you don't have the frizz or knots many people with wavy or curly hair have :p

I know exactly what you mean. My hair does the same, freshly washed and next day hair always has more volume, days 3 and 4 hair begins to lay and clump more and compresses down. It's really obvious with waves and curls. I don't have enough hair to keep some in the back and in the front. But honestly I don't even know if I would want That much hair lol I can barely handle what I have now. It seems like so much to me.

My partner has almost 4 inches and my hair looks to be around the same thickness. I only notice a difference when I pull his hair into a pony, only then do I actually feel his thickness. But even he can't have a curtain of hair covering both front and back.

So true. Honestly I never thought twice about my thickness before joining here and learning about hair stats. I always thought my hair was normal, I mean I knew I didn't have extremely thick hair but never thought I was lacking until I read 2.5 is considered less than average and thin. I was upset at first but luckily I went back to my old train of thought. If it didn't bother me then, why the heck should it bother me now.

See more didn't look at it that way. I think 2 to 4 inch circumference is in the average range.

I've always been insecure about my thickness. I remember hating how my braids never "looked right" as early as age 7.

I actually remember putting my hair in a bun when I was about 8 and thinking 'what? How come my bun is tiiny compared to my friends'. And they all couldn't see why I was bothered and said my bun was cute!

Alissalocks, your hair is pretty! This might debunk what a lot of us on the thread have been saying about thin hair needing wave. Even straight hair, when washed and styled correctly, can look gorgeously voluminous at lower densities.

So beautiful! This was what I always wanted my hair to look like, so I would spend 45 mins every day with a flat iron to achieve it.. Until I came to terms being a wavy, I would have paid big money to have your hair naturally.

MoonRabbit it's taken me until my 40s to accept my flat hair. I am grateful the trend to flat hair came back around, after Perming my hair repeatedly and terribly in the 80s and early 90s trying to get "volume" which is exactly what you've got! Why do we humans do this?

Finally got some recent photos of my 2.5" circumference head of hair. My hair definitely *looks* thin when it's worn in it's naturally straight state. I think it's because I started my journey with a lot of breakage on my canopy, which is at about BSL now while the rest of my hair is TBL. And my hair is very cobwebby and fine...and I just don't personally like the way it looks straight. One day I'll even it all out, when I finally chop off the henna:

This is my 2 1/2 circumference, super fine hair, I doors and then in sunlight. I’ve been on the LHC website for nearly 4 years and although my hair is healthier, age has meant my thickness has not improved much. I have a lot of taper and am still eliminating damage from dye and keratin straightening in the ends of my hair. Constant trimming has made getting to waist a distant dream. It was almost there here but I found it too whispy and got hubby to chop back 4 inches last week.

My hair when wavy looks much fuller but it compacts down to small braids, buns and ponytails. I think its about a 2.5 in circumference. Here is a picture when my hair was longer. Its harder to really see what I am talking about with my current, shorter hair.

I think you may have what they call 'tawny' hair like me, it changes colour from brown to reds, to golden sometimes.

Yes Tawny is a good description. I actually have some pictures where my hair color looks similar to yours. I will have to try your technique of combing my hair while it is drying and see what kind of results I get. :)

I have gained in thickness because of my improved hair care over the last year and am now officially just a little bit thicker than 2.5 inches. But I will stay in this thread because my hair still tapers alot from pony to ends, so I really do feel that I belong here.

Hi elfynity! Happy to see you still growing! I did try this when my hair was shorter and the results were great. I will try this now that my hair is longer. A bit past APL at this point. I will come back to this thread and post the results in a few days. :) Just wanted to let you know that I saw your question.

I haven't done it since my hair got longer and I have lazy summer hair. Now I just throw my hair in a turbie twist and then coil it in a scrunchie bun or leave it down to dry. Which it does very quickly due to the heat we are experiencing here.

Over the past few years I have cut back from TBL a few times because I found my hair was heavy, though each year I noticed that I cut back less each time.....first to MBL... then WL ...then Hip.

I think the difference in weight has been the increase of my fine/wispy silver :thumbsup:...my neck/hand arthritis hasn't been bothered by my hair at all....and I have had flares in other joints!

Just today I rearranged my trim schedule to cut less ...with the intent to try and grow longer .

I love to dust racers each month, then maintain my hemline with the Season changes.... my ends feel so nice....but now I will only do hemline maintenance every few months (if needed), and ignore racers period ...because you always snip more ;)

Well.....it is providential you say that because I was thinking it = it looks like I have been bit by the 'LHC-itis' bug...big surprise there :lol:

I LOVE this. My hair is probably about as thin as yours, and pin straight. people always told me not to grow it out because it was too fine... I rarely ever see photos of people with long, thin hair and it's very discouraging for me. I like your hair a lot though, even straight, I think it looks very pretty and delicate. Oooh…. I hadn’t seen this thread before. My most recent measurement was at 2.25” which means I have either mismeasured in the past or I have lost .25” since I last checked. Could be either way. I might be tending to the thinner side of average, I might love the look of thick hair, especially when the thickness goes right to the end, but I also enjoy my hair as it is (and I know I’m not likely to have to deal with headaches from the weight of my hair…
