View Full Version : Why can’t I see photos uploaded on threads by other members anymore?

This is a recent problem in the last month; photos I used to be able to see as well as any new photos no longer appear for me? What’s up with that?

Could this possibly be to do with the browser your using? have you changed it or not updated it..

The same is happening to me. I'll see people commenting on the photo, but I have to quote the OP and then I can see the link and go see the picture. I have the newest version of Safari.

Are you guys using phones? Or your computer? I use my computer and it's fine here.

I have an iPad and up till 3-4 weeks ago did not have this problem. Now I have a problem in that photos I could previously see I no longer can. I am talking about photos posting on the threads here.

I can't see any photos before the https change, meaning it's basically because the old http isn't being supported anymore (related compatibility issues with it). Aside from that, here's an example of a recent post (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=146495) where the image didn't show for many, but did for others. It was visible on Safari (old version) for me, but not on Google Chrome (new version). I know Chrome's been making a lot of recent changes for security, so I think it'll just take some time? I hope so, anyway! Pili can't see photos from the newest Safari, so I'm assuming there are various changes happening across all browsers.

Oooh, I see what you mean. I am on Firefox and I don't see the OP's pictures in that thread either.

I can see the pictures you posted just fine, Chromis! :flower:

I can't see the picture in the thread Glitch linked, but Lady Stardust posted the links to the pictures and it worked. Sometimes people grab the wrong code, it happens.

I’m pretty sure I checked at the time and it was the right code, but I added an s, couldn’t get the picture to display either so I just posted the link. I think there is a problem with hosting photos on tinypic.

I think I managed a general fix for the HTTPS issue, but it doesn't work for image hosts that haven't switched to HTTPS yet. To further confuse things, older browsers will show http images but other (most likely updated) browsers wont (because they want you to be secure). So, I can see the images in the link below in one browser, but not in another. At this point, I'd assume that if you can't see an image, it is probably not on a secure website. Up to you whether you "Reply with quote" to copy and paste the link or not, but I'd recommend not following the image and advising the posters to switch to a compliant image host for their pictures.

I'm not terribly savvy when it comes to code. Thanks for this.

I posted one from Flickr and one from Imjur both by just copying the image url, it sounds like we will need to experiment to see what photo hosts will and won't work. I have been trying to figure out a bit more before making a new photo tutorial though since someone was having issues with Imjur last week too.

Worked for some ;) I was still unable to open them from my version of Chrome - like Chromis said, it's indeed the image host itself which doesn't support https, which my browser won't work with anymore. My older version of Safari works with both, so it was able to open the links.

Awesome! So many have become finicky so this would be very helpful, especially for new members :o

I can see the pictures posted by Chromis, but not the pictures posted by Glitch and Lady Stardust.

The latter problem is due to Tinypic not returning a JPG image, but rather redirecting the request to a HTML page. This is bad. I suggest using a different photo host.

Okay, off to open a thread in the testing forum! Feel free to shout out any other common hosts you guys use (aside from you awesome folks that host your own of course) and chime in if you deon't see something! It looks like some are easily fixed on the forum side (adding the s), but others are hosting problems, or older browser issues. This way we can make a whitelist of hosts that we know should work and known troublemakers.

In crafts and hobbies, in the nature/ landscape photos, I can’t see any of my pictures anymore.
I’m the last one to post I’m there.
Same picture on a different website posted the same way works on that site.

Using imageshack using the direct link in chrome on a mobile phone.

I was *just* testing them actually! The direct link did not work for me either, but their BB code copypasta did

Ooooh! Image Shack is tricky, the direct link actually redirects when I copied the link: http://imagizer.imageshack.us/a/img922/7383/p222fc.jpg

Let's see if adding the s to *that* one works:

Ding! Okay, so Image Shack will work, but is fussy and needs to be done a certain way.

Ya know, I as the OP of this thread have no clue as to what all of you in-the- know people are talking about. I don’t understand what “url”s are about, or what part servers play in this. All I know is that I could see the pictures and now I can’t. My iPad has used the same version 11.5 since I got it in January 2017. The old iPad I was borrowing before that got the pictures too.

Maybe do Google wat a URL is, because it's everywhere. I'm actually surprised at this. :)

Short answer, not techie answer: The internet is updating itself and now old stuff is not working.

Ever so slightly more technical: Some pictures are not working because a lot of people used a site called PhotoBucket and they basically shut down everyones pictures that used them. Now there is a second issue. The site owner had to update the forum because of Internet Stuff that is changing. Not all the picture sites have updated yet though so some of the photo sites still don't work.

Chromes, what you are saying makes sense to me.

Lapushka, I am not computer internet oriented at all. I am amazed that I am able to do what I can now. Not everyone understands this stuff or has the time to get to know and understand this stuff. Younger persons who grew up with it are among those who have the most understanding as a group. Less so with persons my age, and just because I am more used to actually, for example wanted to actually talk to someone on the phone rather than text. Just an example.....

Thanks for taking the time. When you have a sec, can you tell us imageshack users what to do exactly in simple terms when posting a picture to make it work?

Chromis
May 29th, 2018, 05:04 PM
So, if you want to post it the way you are used to posting (By right clicking and copying the image link - aka direct linking), you can force it to work.

When you right click and save the image location, this is the link you pasted into the forum: http://imagizer.imageshack.us/a/img922/7383/p222fc.jpg
In order to make the forum show it, you need to add an s, like so: https://imagizer.imageshack.us/a/img922/7383/p222fc.jpg

See it, this is the offending character that is causing all the woe: https://imagizer.imageshack.us/a/img922/7383/p222fc.jpg

Otherwise, when you are on the photo's page on Image Shack, look to your right and there is a box that says "Get image links/photo sizes" and you can pick forum from the drop down menu which puts the code in ahead of time. Actually, lemme test that to be sure, because I just direct linked yours since I didn't have the Image Shack page to give me their code, so here's something random below. (Hopefully!)

Unfortunately I couldn't test a postimage photo since I didn't want to have to make an account. Do you have something you wouldn't mind linking for me to test with?

Here is my posts from the baking thread ( #209 and 210) both contain photos but don't show up for me. The links to the photos are still visible when I click reply with quote.

ETA: new photos post just fine from postimage for me but older photos don't show up. Though I am not sure if they just delete after a certain time.

Quoting for testing.

Made this for my Mothers birthday.

White almond cake with white chocolate buttercream and raspberry filling.

https://s25.postimg.org/dnzkad8lr/PSX_20180206_191724.jpg (https://postimages.org/)

https://s25.postimg.org/yxn6l7wm7/PSX_20180206_191615.jpg (https://postimages.org/)

The drop flowers are coming off blue in the picture but they are actually dark and light purple.

Huh, I can't even get postimg.org to resolve. postimg.cc redirects to https://postimages.org/ but appending dnzkad8lr does not resolve to anything and neither does the entire address.

BUT, if I replace .org with .cc then the images show.

Another trick to try is to change https:// prefix to http://

Note the lack of an 's' - secure connections are little more stubborn
