I'm starting an alphabet-inspired hairstyle challenge, because I'm bored, and when I get bored I start looking at short hair pictures!
The basic idea: I made a list of 26 hairstyles, one for each letter of the alphabet, and I will be working my way from A to Z, one style per day.
Sometimes I might skip a day because LIFE and whatnot.
My list is subject to change but of course the alphabet will not.
Wanna join me? Make your own A to Z list (I got most of mine from the Hairstyle of the Month thread) and jump in!
I'm starting tomorrow but you can start whenever. :)

Neat idea! Unfortunately I can't do it because I have to wear my hair style a certain way for work, but I'll keep an eye on this thread for sure!

Ooh, this is a very cool idea! I'd have to modify it a lot to be fatigue/weakness-friendly, to the point of basically being a different challenge so I won't be participating in this right now, but it's certainly a great idea to stave off boredom and frustration. I will enjoy seeing what people come up with  LOVE the alphabet-list concept!

This is my list for right now. Some of these I have done, some I haven't, some I don't even know what they are! (Yet.)
It's going to change depending on time, mood, hair condition, etc.
Of course anyone doing the challenge can use this list or make up their own. :)

Artemis Bun
Bweeta's buns
Cameo bun
Dutch braid
Elling woman bun
French braid
Gibraltar bun
Half up
Infinity bun
Just down
Knot bun
Lace braid
Mall bangs
Nautilus
Orchid bun
Ponytail
eQuilibrium bun
Rope braid
Sock curls
Topsy tail
Upside down something
Vortex bun
Waterfall braid
boX braid
hYpno-swirl bun
Zig zag part

(I had to be a little creative with a few of the letters.)

Giant and fluffy and eating my head. :)

Day 2. B is for Braided Bun! I had originally put Bweeta's buns for B, but Idk what I was thinking. Today is wash day and my hair is icky and I don't want to deal with it.
And after washing, I definitely wouldn't want to do Bweeta's buns. I want my hair to look nice for church tomorrow and if I put all those braids and buns in, it would look... special... tomorrow. Haha
So here is my greasy messy braided bun.

You don't have to stick to my list... I'M not even going to stick to my list! Haha!
You might have to be creative with style names but that's part of the fun, right?

Day 3. C is for Cameo bun half up! I've been wanting to try a cameo as a half up since I learned it. Very princess-y.

Wow AmaryllisRed you have amazing skills and hair!

I won't be participating in this - I don't have the ability at the moment and my hair doesn't like (unbraided) buns either - but you have inspired me to make my own braid focused version to expand my hairstyle list, like you I had to be creative naming them all.

It will take me a loooooong time to learn them all + my hair needs to be longer to do some of them but I'll get there one day and thanks for the inspiration!

It slid down my neck. I think it did that last time, too.
No wonder I don't wear it often: it takes a minute to put up, looks okay at best, and loosens in an hour.
Isn't this style supposed to last for days? No. Not for slippy hair, it doesn't!

ETA: Note to self: Self, ponytail anchor(s) is NOT optional for ANY hairstyle!;)

B is for: battlebraid

I was going to skip today. Bweeta's buns, Bunny bun, bee butt bun; was all I could think of and none suited. Had something in my brain: a ponytail with the tail made into 3 braids. I french braided the sides on a whim, and it morphed into this! https://farm1.staticflickr.com/981/40948758055_a8d5749ae4.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/25ov68V)2018-05-02_08-34-13 (https://flic.kr/p/25ov68V) by Mom and wife (https://www.flickr.com/photos/62007100@N08/), on Flickr

I totally made a battlebraid on accident! :D (I know it isn't intricate and super battlebraidey, but it feels "tough girl", so I'm going with it! Also, has a ponytail base, so this thing will hold!)

@AmaryllisRed: Thanks!
Your french braid is sooo pretty! (Those don't hold for me either! The sides sag before I even get the thing done! :D It's all good though. Plenty of styles work out just fine. )

@Neko_ kawaii: The pin curled tails are brilliant, and look fantastic! I jammed my ends in, and think that disrupted the bun stability powers.

I is for Infinity bun!
I struggle with getting this one the right level of tightness. If it's not tight enough it just falls apart, but if it's too tight, I can't shove a fork or a stick in there.
Also my ends are starting to poke out since my last infinity bun, so yay for growth! I did it lower to eat up more length.

:waits to see what neko_kawaii does for U:

I was thinking some kind of flipped bun (Upside down bun), like a flipped infinity bun, but I tried it this morning and it looked weird. So I'll have to try again tomorrow.

I love those buns, neko_kawaii!

Edited to add: I also wish I could do one of those upside down French braids that ends with a bun on the top of the head, but I can never get the braid to look like a braid. Idk if I have a weirdly shaped head or what. So if anyone has any tips on that, they are welcome!

I plan to attempt an upside down French braid. Eep! I tried once, years ago, and I remember it ending badly. So, tomorrow’s picture might be of a spectacular fail.

neko_kawaii

Well, the upside down French braid was actually moderately successful, but doing something with the length was a fail. I’m doing “Unusual” instead. I’ll post pics of both later.

Gibraltar bun?

Gibraltar bun?

A great suggestion, but I've never been able to make it work. Cinnabuns do not play nice! The coils slide everywhere, and there aren't enough pins in the world to make them stay. :)
I'll certainly give it a try though! I've got all sorts of "try hard"!

Upside-down French Braid
https://farm1.staticflickr.com/982/41366837565_c3950651bf.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/262rRBk)
Despite my predictions otherwise, the braid was a success. Figuring out what to do with the braid hanging down my nose was a different thing. I attempted to tuck the braid length inside the pocket created by the French Braid (the Tucked French Braid is the style of the month, after all) but that just loosened the "front" of the braid and made it really obvious my hair needed a wash. I wasn't sure if I was successful with this braid that I would be able to wear it for very long, my hairline readily objects to being pulled in a contrary direction and this is about as contrary as it gets.

So, I converted "U" into Unusual, and wore my hair down. The ride to work was fine. Work was fine, but there was a strong breeze when I got off work, and that was not going to happen. Fortunately, it stays in a Nautilus without any tools.

Wow lovely hairstyle!!! I love your hair color by the way (with the bright orange strand).

My temples/sides are gray, and the henna stains it different. ;)
It doesn't always show up, depends on the light. (Again, it's the henna. Indoors, it looks almost brown, but in the sunshine, it's bright!)

ETA: There is also some super-faded Manic Panic Vampire Red still hanging on in there. I thought it was surely gone by now, but it's peeking out in the Gibson Tuck picture where it's folded over.

Another one I never would have tried, because it sits low on my neck, and my braid is thin. (Ya, I know paranda(i) are totally acceptable for this style, but in my mind the added weight would make it even more uncomfortable.)

I made it work by wrapping the braid twice around the tied/scarf base. Miraculously, it didn't bother my neck; but the loops loosened during the day, and the stick slipped out. I ended up using a rubberband with the stick to make a faux-flexi 8 at work. That helped, but I should have secured it better before leaving the house.
Note to self: use pins to secure the loops, and an elastic to secure the stick. :)
Will probably try it again. I like how unusual it is: a scarf and a stick, yet still simple. :)

@Browneyedsusan, My Orchid Bun attempt did not work so here is an Off Coiled Bun. I do my hair in an English braid almost every day so I am very used to the sectioning, I just have trouble separating the strands for any sort of French or Dutch braid.

I got the idea from ladollyvita333 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXjmBytafxg&t=5s). But I don't have the gumption for all those steps! Mine is 2 ponytails: over/under, braid the string into the ponytails, made a nautilus from the top one, wrapped the bottom one around. :)

Sorry I dropped the ball a bit here. I saw this hairstyle on Silvousplaits' youtube channel (link, style at 4:30 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puzgpBoesss&t=430s)) , knew I wanted to do it for "r", and it took me some time to learn. The handholds and twisting motion were confusing, and then I lost track of what was going on when I passed the thing over my shoulder!

It's 2, 3-strand rope braids, arranged over:under. :)

Today is a trial run. If it holds together at all, and is comfortable, I'll try it again and put it into my hairstyle armory! :)

ETA: The last few inches of the braids are woven in a regular 3-strand english pattern, because rope braids tend to squirm out of their torsion for me. No hairties, hairspray on the tassels will hold them okay.

Nice job, Ravenskey. :)

Photographing dark hair must be super challenging. It's hard to take pictures of the back of your head! Arms aren't made to bend like that, and getting enough light on that dark hair is almost impossible! You did quite well with what you had to work with.

"A is for Artemis Bun: a Hairstyle Board Book for Little Longhairs" :)

I remember that Klutz book!

Such fun! LHC definitely needs to publish a collaborative work.
Did you also own a copy? Clearly we've been longhairs for quite a while <3 .

Edit: I just opened the Tessera video - such a cute reason for the name, from the Greek for "four". Very geeky, too.

I don't remember if I *had* it or just circled and drew stars by it when the Scholastic book sale flyer came out.

I still want to try the Tessera but I was thinking of doing three, not four-- but then it wouldn't be the Tessera, would it?

Ooh, Scholastic book sales, that's nostalgia!
You can make it the Tria instead. (Or tricera, if that sounds nicer. Though that might be more appropriate for bee butt buns rather than cinnabuns!)

So since the website was down yesterday, or just my internet?, here was my take on a cable braid. I'm pretty sure I didn't twist both sides in the same direction? Oh well I thought it actually looked pretty cool lol
Today D was down. Because I was running late for work anyways and didn't have time

Actually it didn't take quite as long as a normal French braid but knowing which direction you're twisting gets confusing!

This looks like quite a bit of fun. I think I'll do two versions, a A-Z braid challenge and an A-Z bun challenge where I do the braids on the weekends and the buns during the week because the braided styles will mostly take longer and many aren't very protective. I might need to get creative with naming. Looking through this thread, the hairstyle thesaurus, and a LOT of hairstyle recreation videos, here is my preliminary list:

Oh thank you so much for coming up with the braid and bun versions! That’s a great list! I hope I can finish the challenge before 2023.

No problem. I selected styles I was interested in trying and at some point I realized I had multiple styles on most of the letters, and they just happened to break apart by braid vs. bun fairly easily. I actually had more braided styles than bunned styles and many of the buns are also braided. So I tried to break those up by how long they will take. I can braid a million tiny accent braids into my hair on a Saturday but I don't have that kind of time when I need to go to work. I think the bun ideas I came up with are mostly the easier styles. The braids are largely rope braids or english braids with a couple french braided bun styles so if you want to start with that list you can. If you have any questions about where a style came from I can send you the videos or I will link them whenever it isn't very obvious when I get to them. Harpgal's preferred bun style for a long time was a center-held braided bun, but that doesn't start with an "h" and I wear the hypno bun almost daily.

This is the first assignment of LHC’s ABC Hairstyle Challenge, I will do both the bun and braid versions separately, but I probably won’t update every day. Let’s start from A for Artemis Bun. Fingers crossed, I hope I can finish the ABC Bun Challenge before 2023 lol.
Also, Happy birthday to me!

I will eventually make video tutorials of all my A-Z Bun challenge just for the experience and help others. I hope that by creating this 9-picture grid format, I can slowly build up my own hairstyle dictionary, or pictionary for visual learners.

New Level Unlocked, here’s my first attempt at the Artemis Bun, basically just a good old nautilus bun turning 90-degree clockwise and sticking the hairpin vertically. I haven’t shampooed my hair for 25 days now and my locks are still holding strong.

First, without a tie, I gather my hair into a pony on the lower center back of my head with my left hand.
With my right palm facing backward and the thumb up, I clamp the pony from under with the L formed by my right index and thumb.
I pull the pony down to cover my right palm with my left hand, then I turn my right palm to the right and then to the front, this is a counterclockwise motion, thus forming the first loop with my right index-pinkie. If your hair is on the thin side, you might need 2-3 fingers for the loop, if you're on the ultra-thick side, you can wrap around five fingers or the whole wrist. To me, 4 fingers are just right for my length and my thickness.
I wrap the rest of the hair clockwise around the base of the pony with my left hand until the ends are tucked, then I start to pull the loop off my right hand and slowly push the wrapped coils upward. I adjust a little bit until I feel the loops are knitting closely.
At this point, a nautilus bun is formed and it can stay solid without any props, or you can add a hairstick for more security.
And to make the Artemis bun, I just need to hold the bun with both hands and turn it clockwise (I'm right-handed and that's the way I wrapped the hair ends) for another 90 degrees to tighten the bun, insert the tip of the stick from the top loop, touch the scalp, slide it across the pony base and poke it out through the bottom, the stick can be vertical or slightly diagonal depending on your preference.

This is my second assignment for LHC’s ABC Hairstyle Challenge, Bee Butt Bun.

First I gathered my hair into a pony in the center back of my head without a tie, then I started to twist the hair round and round like what you’d do with a cinnamon bun, clockwise or counterclockwise doesn’t matter, just do it as you please. Unlike a cinnamon bun, the coils of this are wrapped behind each other. I tried to use a stick for the first time, but it loosened too soon, so I used two hairpins on the base instead. Too bad I couldn’t find my yellow top to get a more bee vibe, I had to make do with my red satin pajama. I wouldn’t do cardio wearing this bun as it’s not stable enough, but it’s a fun experiment.

This is a quick and easy variation of the aforementioned Bee Butt Bun (my second assignment for LHC’s ABC Hairstyle Challenge), as the bee butt was not completely fixed on my scalp, and for my gym workout, I needed to stabilize it somehow. Thanks to JJJ’s comment on Long Hair Carolyn’s tutorial video, I ended up flipping it up and pinned it with a single hair stick as a Lifted Coil, which is way more secure, thanks.

In theory, if I start the pony on the top crown of my head, I can fix the end of the bee butt with a stick, in the same vine, I can start the pony on the left or right side, and pin the bee butt horizontal or vertically, and the longer my hair is, the more interesting it will look, maybe I can even bend the bee butt a little to fix a J shape, ah, the long hair possibilities!

I will probably find another L style when I come to do the L letter of the ABC challenge, the more the merrier.

There’s the pretZel bun, but I’m leaning more towards a Zigzag parting of bun(s). Maybe I will come up with something else when I come to that letter, maybe a Zero, which is basically any round shape bun, or a Zebra bun combined with white ribbons? That might be fun. Or a Zucchini, because I know that fruit well enough to form a similar shape or use a similar color for decoration.

This is my third assignment for LHC’s ABC Hairstyle Challenge, Cinnamon Bun.

It’s the same basic technique as yesterday’s Bee Butt Bun.

First I gathered my hair into a pony in the center back of my head without a tie, then I started to twist the hair round and round, clockwise or counterclockwise doesn’t matter, just do it as you please. Unlike a Bee Butt, coils of this are wrapped tightly around each other’s edge on the scalp. Depending on your length and thickness, after you have twisted 1.5 to 2 coils, tuck the rest around the base of the pony. You can use multiple pins or a fork for an easy fix. I used a single stick, first I inserted the tip of the stick inside the outer coil until I could feel the scalp, then I tilted the stick diagonally, sliding through the central base of the pony, then I made it through the outer coil of the opposite side, this way the bun was pretty secure. Of course you can always use a hair tie for the pony and add a second stick or a hair pin for more stabilization. I don’t use elastic ties anymore but I watched a ballet bun tutorial that divided the hair into two parts for a more intricate coiling look, I might try it in the future.

I could’ve used more pins to make the bun completely plastered to the scalp, but I like how it stood out, and the bun looks a bit oblong, maybe I can make a square next time. Also I can always go for another direction for the twist. If I have much longer hair, I can probably try to make 2.5-3 coils. I love the long hair possibilities, I can’t wait to recreate the same bun at different lengths in the future, but first, let me go through the ABC challenge first.

I did a pretzel bun for P. I could probably do something zebra with my zebra scrunchies though.

This is my 4th assignment for LHC’s ABC Hairstyle Challenge: Disc Bun.

First I gather my hair into a pony in the center back of my head without a tie, I clamp the pony with my index and thumb, then with the other hand, I separate the hair into two equal parts. I wrap the right half of the hair upward counterclockwise over the index and the middle finger, slide it under my pinky and downward, and continue to go counterclockwise and under the thumb, I wrap the rest of the right hair around the base of the pony under all the fingers, paying attention not to let the left half of the hair get in my way. Then I tackle the left half of the hair, I wrap this half clockwise over the thumb, going upward and under the rest of the fingers. I wrap the rest in the same fashion as before but clockwise. Finally, I get two loops around my thumb and my index-middle fingers, I insert the tip of my hair stick from the index loop, touch the scalp, glide it over the center of the pony and poke it through the thumb loop, and I am done.
My bun is a bit off-center, that’s intentional because yesterday’s cinnamon bun was too center and I try to change the position and the hold of my bun every day.
This bun is amazingly secure and has a pretty classic shape, I enjoy it very much.
If you’re left-handed, you can start from the left half of the hair, clockwise or counterclockwise doesn’t matter as long as you do the opposite directions for the two loops.

This is my 5th assignment for LHC’s ABC Hairstyle Challenge: Everyday Bun.

This feels like a lazy version of nautilus bun, actually.

First, with my left hand, I gather my hair into a pony in the center back of my head without a tie, then with the palm of my right hand facing my scalp and my thumb downward, I clamp the pony with my right thumb and index, then I wrap the pony upward and over my right pinky. Grabbing the pony, I turn all right fingertips clockwise with a twist of my wrist, and my palm is back facing my scalp, now with a double twist of hair as the base of the pony. I then poke my right thumb through the index-pinky loop, grab the twist and pull it out. I tuck the rest of the hair counterclockwise around the base of the twist with my left hand.

If you’re left-handed, you can insert the stick at this point, but if you're right-handed like me, you can change hands now, grab the protruding twist with your left hand, free your right hand to go get the stick or fork, stab the tip in the middle of the twist, stretch it a bit upward toward your hairline but you should not feel too much tension, press the tip against your scalp, tilting it forward and down across the base of the pony, poke it through the loop down under and you are done.

This is surprisingly quick and easy, and it’s amazingly secure, the bun never wavered during my 1hr workout. It will probably become one of my regular bun repertoires.

Everything has been going smoothly so far, I wonder if I should up the game by doing more than 2 letters a day, but then again, too much manipulation is bad for hair, so let’s stick to daily updates then.

I’m almost tempted to start another ABC Bun cycle after this one instead of an ABC Braid challenge because I’m such a bunhead now. If I can do 26x2 different buns, I’m going to apply for the Long Haired Knight as "Harvester of Hair", does that sound funny?

This is my 6th assignment for LHC’s ABC Hairstyle Challenge: Flipped Bun or Flipped Cinnamon Bun.

First I gather my hair into a pony in the center back of my head without a tie, then start to twist the hair round and round, clockwise or counterclockwise doesn’t matter, just do it as you please. The first coils of this bun are wrapped tightly around each other’s edge on the scalp. Depending on your length and thickness, after you have twisted 1.5-2 coils, tuck the rest on the surface of the bun facing backward, grab all the coils with both hands and reverse the twisting direction a little bit to loosen the base. Then you flip all the coils upward and press it down, if luck has it, there will be a small pocket to hide the bottom part of or all the coils, if not, when you try for the second time, create a bigger pocket. You are unlikely to succeed at your first attempt if you have longer than tbl hair. I must have tried over 10 times, got over-frustrated, gave up, went to sleep, and when I woke up this morning, a lightbulb moment happened and I succeeded it, twice in a row. Now smooth the hair on the sides or it will be a mess. When you insert the hair stick, poke the tip into the middle of the second to the last coil, feel your scalp, tilting it up and then downward. I won’t do cardio wearing this hairdo because it’s not very stable, I think a fork, a flexi-8, or a ficcarre will be more suitable if you have lots of hair. This hairdo requires muscle memory from lots of practice.
I have to say this is the most aesthetically pleasing bun I’ve done so far. The shape of my updo has never been this voluminous and perfect. I find the peek-a-boo coils rather adorable and sassy and yet it gives me a serious governess vibe with my white shirt on.

This is my 7th assignment for LHC’s ABC Hairstyle Challenge: Gibraltar Bun or Twisted Wrap Bun.

This is essentially a variation of the Cinnamon Bun, or a love child between Lazy Wrap Bun and Nautilus bun.

First I gather my hair into a pony in the center back of my head without a tie, then I start to twist the hair round and round, clockwise or counterclockwise doesn’t matter, just do it as you please. Make sure that the first coil of this bun is not deathly tight, the rest of the hair is twisted and coiled close to the scalp behind the first loop around the edge. After I tuck the end on the base of the pony, I grab all the coils with both hands and reverse the twisting direction a little bit to loosen the base (if you start with a loose base, you can skip this step), then I spread the first coil/middle coil over to the rest of the coils, with my thumb and index holding each end of the oval loop, I press the tip of the stick close to my index, slide it across the base and poke it out near my thumb and I’m done.

It is said that this is named Gibraltar because the bun is as solid as a rock, well, to me, when I tried it on the mannequin, it was very secure, but on my own head, I think it’s not as stable as a nautilus, maybe I loosened the coil too much. I will keep trying.

I like the overall shape and small coiling details, it is much flatter than the Nautilus Bun and Artemis Bun, it can be a good choice for napping.

After a month of wrap buns, now I’m starting to hone in on the twisting buns, that’s why I intentionally choose all the cinnamon variations, let’s see where this challenge will bring me.

This is my 8th assignment for LHC’s ABC Hairstyle Challenge: Half Flipped Bun, inspired by SwordWomanRiona’s tutorial (https://youtu.be/zAmn76-3zd0).

If you have difficulty doing Day 6’s Flipped Bun, I strongly suggest you try this version because it’s way easier and very comfy. I like that it has different shapes from two sides and you can adjust accordingly to your thickness and length.

As always, first I gather my hair into a pony in the center back of my head without a tie, then I start to twist the hair round and round, I am right handed so I always do it counterclockwise. The first coil of this bun is wrapped tightly close to the scalp. Then I just flip this coil all the way up until it is pressed to the scalp again. Now with my left hand holding the coil and the rest of the hair like a reverse Q, I use the right hand to insert the tip of the hair stick in the middle of the top coil, feel the scalp, tilting it upward and then downward vertically through the base of the pony and poke it out, now wrap the rest of the hair counterclockwise under the tip of the stick, up and over the top part of the coil, Riona probably had knee length hair when she made the video, I have tailbone length with a long fairytail, so I twist and tuck it under the first coil, repeat the motion until I hide all the ends beneath the first wrap, otherwise if the ends finish on the side, it will come loose.
My hair is probably too heavy and the tension caused the hair stick to go slightly askew instead of vertical at the end, but overall this has become one of my top three of this week. It’s quick and easy, pretty and sturdy. And it’s very neat, you don’t need to worry about the messy side of the full flipped bun.

My length is probably not long enough to challenge the Helix Bun, which is another variation of the Cinnabun, but one day, I swear one day I will do it, probably after I finish the alphabet and restart the ABC Bun cycle with different buns. I can’t think of reasons to start an ABC Braid challenge though, my heart is just not there, I love bunning too much, unless I do braided buns.

And as I hit different milestones in the future, I will revisit and recreate all these buns or even develop some variations of my own, I’m looking forward to that as well.

This is my 9th assignment for LHC’s ABC Hairstyle Challenge: Infinity Bun

Again, this is a variation of Cinnamon Bun or Bee Butt Bun.

I am right-handed and I always twist my hair clockwise, first I gather my hair into a pony near my left ear without a tie, then I start to twist the hair round and round. The coils of this bun are wrapped behind each other tightly one after another close to the scalp, when I tuck the end to the pony base, I essentially form a Bee Butt Bun. Then comes the key move, I flip the top coil all the way to the right side until it is pressed to the scalp, this way I form a ∞ shape. I normally start my hair stick from right to left, but this time, I insert the tip of the hair stick in the middle of the left coil, feel the scalp, tilt it horizontally, slide the stick through the base of the pony and poke it out of the right coil.

My hair is probably too long and it forms too many loops, so the left side is much bigger and thicker than the right single coil, and the tension caused the hair stick to go slightly askew, as I was photo shooting, the ends came undone a little bit.

If I were to do this again, for more stabilization, I'd add a second stick, this time, I'd insert it from the right to left, making sure both loops are firmly pressed to the scalp.

Also, I'd probably do it differently, for example, after I twist 2 loops, I'd immediately press the first loop to the right, then insert the stick, and finally tuck the end for a more balanced look. I'll table this for a future project, I'm too sleepy to do it again now.

Overall this is a very beautiful bun, and it's way easier than it looks. If you do it vertically, you get a figure 8. The marvel of math, ha.

This is my 10th assignment for LHC’s ABC Hairstyle Challenge: Jumbo Bun.

In honor of Halloween spirit and autumn and inspired by @scarlett.o.hair 's recent cute styles (https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cj059r3DIAG/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=), I decided to create a huge pumpkin bun a la Jack-O-Lantern style.

I happened to have 8 xxl-sized black hair donuts lying around, so I sewed them with black threads to form a pumpkin shape, then I covered the pumpkin with two 60cm black hairnets, making sure there is a hole in the middle. The nets filled the gaps and made the indents shallower, and the Velcro-like donut mesh wouldn’t directly touch my hair and cause tangles in the process.

I don’t really like using elastic bands, so when I do occasionally make a high pony tail, I use one without metal bits, preferably covered by velvet or silk material, and that’s why I use my trusted checkerboard pattern scrunchy.

I needed to use a topsy tail to pull my pony through the pumpkin hole, but ended up breaking it, that’s how you know your hair is thick/coarse lol.

I then patiently divided my hair into 8 equal parts and covered each strand over the arch of the pumpkin, pinned it down with tiny black clips, because at this point you can’t get a big enough elastic tie through, and my method protects the hair better without causing any tangles or breakage, the distribution covered the pumpkin smoothly and evenly.

I twisted the rest of the hair around the base of the pumpkin and fixed the end with a bobby pin. Finally I decorated it with some real pumpkin leaves and tendrils from my rooftop garden pumpkin patch.

Thanks to my mom for helping me fix the gaps in between while I was struggling. I love this big bun!

A New Page, finally!

This is my 11th assignment for LHC’s ABC Hairstyle Challenge: KarenLynn's Double-Looped Knot Bun

I did this based on KarenLynnLHC's Youtube video, it was said to be created by Twitch's original picture instructions, but it’s not the KL Knot. I still post the pics here, but I will do the actual KL Knot later to remedy my mistake and give people a better idea of how similar these two knot buns are for comparison.

First I gather my hair into a pony slightly near my left ear without a tie (because if I make the pony dead center, the bun would end up slightly rightward), with my left palm facing the scalp and my thumb going down, I clamp the pony with my left thumb and index. I use my right hand to move the pony up and over the left index and middle finger, let the hair fall down counterclockwise, thus forming the first loop. I grab the fallen hair with my right hand over the left thumb, twist it a bit to tighten the grip, move it up counterclockwise again until my left index and middle finger can touch it and crochet it through and out of the first loop to form a second loop, pay attention not to hook too much hair out, just big enough to form a reverse U, then I insert the tip of the hair stick through the middle of the second loop, stretch it toward the top right direction until I touch the scalp, then tilt the stick horizontally through the base of the pony and poke it out of the inner left side of the first loop. Tuck the rest of the hair counterclockwise and I’m done (you can do this step before inserting the stick for a better hold).

The result is a beautiful double-looped knot, and if you do it strategically, it’s got a lovely heart shape. It’s very quick and easy, and very stable. It requires a shorter length than the Celtic Knot Bun, which is often compared with it, which I will surely tackle later.

This is my redemptive 11th assignment for LHC’s ABC Hairstyle Challenge: KarenLynn Knot.

I made a mistake yesterday by following KarenLynnLHC's Youtube video of Double-Looped Knot, so here is the real KL Knot after I’ve studied her image instructions.

First I gather my hair into a pony slightly near my left ear without a tie (because if I make it dead center, the bun would end up slightly rightward), with my left palm facing the scalp and my thumb down, I clamp the pony with my left thumb and index. I use my right hand to move the pony up and over the left index and middle finger, letting the hair fall down behind the fingers to the right/clockwise. I grab the fallen hair with my right hand, move it clockwise over the shoulder, thus forming the first loop, I move it up clockwise again until my left index and middle finger can pinch the rest of the length out of the loop, then I insert the tip of the stick through the middle of the first loop, stretch it toward the top right until I touch the scalp, then tilt the stick horizontally through the base of the pony and poke it out of the inner left side of the first loop. Tuck the rest of the hair clockwise and I’m done (you can do this step before inserting the stick for a better hold).

I would like to make video tutorial of this later if I have enough time to recreate this style.

This is my 12th assignment for LHC’s ABC Hairstyle Challenge: L-Infinity Bun.

This bun is known for its particular L gesture and it’s also easier than the previous Infinity Bun, which is a variation of the cinnamon bun.

I start by gathering my hair into a ponytail in the back of my head, I am right-handed and I want the bun to stay center, so I twist the pony a bit off center to the right to start. Don’t twist too hard, this step is to keep flyaways at bay and to make the final bun more texture.

I form an L-shape with my left thumb and index-middle finger, with my palm facing the scalp and the thumb down, I place my index-middle under the base of the pony twist, wrap the pony over the index-middle to form the first loop, move the hair clockwise behind the thumb then go back to wrap the thumb to form a second loop, at this point I stretch my thumb and index apart to almost 160 degrees to spread the loops, tuck the rest of the hair counterclockwise around the base of the pony.

I insert the tip of the stick in the middle of the first loop, touch my scalp, tilting it vertically and poke it out of the second loop and I’m done.

The L-infinity Bun’s figure-8 shape is different from the Infinity bun because the crisscross is the opposite direction, TrapperCreekD’s method made it the same, I will do it next time.

This is my 13th assignment for LHC's ABC Hairstyle Challenge: Marine Bun.
As the name suggests, this is a military hairstyle, I learned it from the text instruction of LHC user Fern (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=125022&p=3477969&viewfull=1#post3477969).

First I gather my hair into a pony on the lower center back of my head with a tie.

Then I separate my hair into two equal parts, wet my hands, and start to twist the first strand into a Bee Butt Bun, clockwise or counterclockwise doesn't matter, just do it as you please. I fix the end with a hairpin around the pony base, the second strand should be protruding from the Bee Butt at this point.

I wet my hands again and twist the second strand into a quasi-Cinnamon Bun around the Bee Butt Bun, then I fix the end with a second hairpin around the pony base. And the bun is finished.

This is my day 1 hair, I water rinsed last night and my hair is just too fluffy. So finally, I wet my hands again and try to sleek my whole head, but fail miserably with my particular lighting setup.

Fern said this hairstyle would be rock solid and could last all day long with military training, but for me, since I tried to compress it too much, it caused the opposite reaction, the bun started exploding and unraveling during my less than 1 minute photoshoot.

I can't say I'm a big fan of this style, I didn't use any hair gel like Fern described because I will never put any styling product on my hair, just plain water. And I always loathe using elastic ties and hairpins. My particular head shape means any low buns make me look older and sloppy, so I took down this bun within 15 minutes.

Overall, I did this purely for the challenge and the experience, I even put on my most military-looking T-shirt for the photoshoot. But will I ever do this again? Very unlikely, I know way more bun styles that are both rock solid and complement my features. But thanks to Fern's instruction, I now add a new bunning style to my belt, and doing it on my own and seeing it with my eyes to know whether it suits me or not is a very important lesson. It encourages me to keep experimenting and keep trying out new things with an open mind.

Some of you might notice I always mark my hair status on the bottom right corner, and today's data is different from yesterday's, that was because this morning I did my monthly measurement, turned out I had a little growth spurt! Over the last month, I had 2cm of hair growth and I also gained 0.5cm of pony circumference. That's great news, isn't it?
I analyzed the contributing hair growth factor here (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=155448&p=3962642&viewfull=1#post3962642), check it out if you're interested.

This is my 14th assignment for LHC's ABC Hairstyle Challenge: Nautilus Bun.

This is the first bun I mastered after joining LHC, to me, it’s classic and timeless. This is without a doubt, one of my favorite buns and my staple. It is also my first love in the LHC, thanks to it, I develop a passion for experimenting with various updos with hair sticks, and I will forever be grateful to it.
It's like a rite of passage for all longhairs to master this bun. Something I can do within 30 seconds, and I always fall back on it when I need to get my hair out of my face.

The first assignment of this challenge, the Artemis Bun, is just another Nautilus Bun turning 90 degrees clockwise.

If your hair is on the thin side, you might need 2-3 fingers for the loop, if you're on the ultra thick side, you can wrap around five fingers or the whole wrist. To me, 4 fingers is just right for my length and my thickness.
I wrap the rest of the hair clockwise around the base of the pony with my left hand until the ends are tucked, then I start to pull the loop off my right hand and slowly push the wrapped coils upward. I adjust a little bit until I feel the loops are knitting closely.
The good thing about this bun is that it can pretty much stay solid on its own without any props. But if you want to be extra secure, you can add a hair stick.
I always insert the tip from the right above the loop, tilt it inside until I feel my scalp, then I slide it vertically and poke it out of the other side.

This is my 15th assignment for LHC's ABC Hairstyle Challenge: Orchid Bun.
There are quite some different versions of this bun around the net, and many of them are variations of the cinnamon bun, which requires you to twist the hair and flip it, one the most watched tutorials is Torrin’s almost Figure 8 one, and it’s quite eye-catching because who doesn’t want those luxurious long locks? However, I found out that, hilariously, with my thickness, my hair is far from long enough to follow that tutorial and it just wouldn’t stay secure, I nearly broke another stick! So I went back to the LHC and followed the OG text instruction, and it’s quick and easy and doesn’t require as much length or thickness or even any twisting. I quite enjoy it because it stays rock secure.

First, without a tie, I gather my hair into a pony on the center back of my head with my left hand.
Holding a hair stick with my right hand horizontally, the tip is pointing at 9 o’clock, I place it above the base of the pony.
My left hand flips the pony up and over the stick counterclockwise, the rest of the hair falls behind the stick on the left.
Holding the hair with my left hand loosely, I rotate the stick clockwise until the tip is pointing at 1-2 o’clock, I adjust the tightness as I go, then I wrap the rest of the hair around the pony base counterclockwise until I can tuck all the ends.
I tilt the tip of the stick to touch my scalp, slide it across the pony base and poke it out above the wrap formed by the rest of the hair, the tip is pointing at 7-8 o’clock.
And I’m done.
I love that it looks totally from the left and the right, almost looking like a B, but wait, there’s a sneaky wrap lol.

This is my 16th assignment for LHC's ABC Hairstyle Challenge: Palmier Bun.
This bun is invented by Bparnell75 for long hairs on the thinner side, it’s best to be held by forks, then Wispe came up with a variation for hairsticks, here’s my take for the ii/iii folks.

First, without a tie, I gather my hair into a pony on the center back of my head with my right hand.
Due to my particular head shape, I don’t like low buns, so I start it a bit higher, you’re free to start at any position you like.

With my left palm facing the scalp and the thumb down, I place my left index and middle finger under the pony base.

My right hand flips the pony down and cover the two fingers, forming the first loop, then go clockwise and behind the thumb, wrap over the thumb to form a second loop.

Bparnell75's original version requires you to repeat the figure 8 motion until the hair is used up, Wispe's variation only do this figure 8 once, which suits me better because my fingers are not long enough for more than two thick loops.

I wrap the rest of the hair counterclockwise around the base of the pony, then I insert the tip of the stick along the gap between the left index and middle finger until I feel my scalp, I let go of my index-middle, tilt the stick to the right, then slide it across the pony base and poke it out of the second loop. I finally let go of my left thumb and I’m done.
My 13cm stick could barely hold the two loops because it’s too short, but this bun is surprisingly secure and amazingly beautiful.

Hilariously, when I did the photoshoot, I didn’t know my hair ends weren’t tucked properly and they poked out. I find it rather adorable so I keep it. And the swirls are just too cute.

I will 100% recreate this style when my hair is longer and use a different hair toy just for the fun.

This is my 17th assignment for LHC's ABC Hairstyle Challenge: Quickie Bun.
This is also known as 10-second Quick Bun by eadwine but her video tutorial is no longer available so I followed the instruction of TorrinPaige's (https://youtu.be/pOzk5VHwx4c). It's for longhairs who are a bit "hairstyle challenged" and just want to get their hair out of their face when they are busy, you can use any tool that is handy, like a pencil, clips, pins or a fork. It’s like a combination of Nautilus Bun and French Twist but easier and quicker, this hairdo doesn’t require you to have thick long hair, any hair type will do.

At this point, this is exactly how you start a nautilus bun.
Then, I keep raising and rotating my wrist to form more twist, until the hair ends are wrapped inside the base of the twist on my lower head, this part is exactly like a French twist. I use my left hand to tuck/fold the uncooperative hair ends inside the twist.
Then I use my left hand to pull the loop off from my right palm and cover/wrap the twist in the middle, the end result looks like an Artemis Bun, but I like how my twist caused a two-session cocoon shape.
I use two claw clips to fix the outer loop on both sides like TP did, and it’s deathly solid, almost to the point of giving me a headache, I think that’s because my claw teeth dip into my scalp. If I were to do it again, I might use a stick.
