View Full Version : The braided bun

So I know a lot of you do braided bun hair styles. How the heck do you contain them?
I have tried bobby pins, large hair pins (theyre like amish pins but less sturdy) and spin pins.
I cannot get a braided bun to stay up!!
They always undo themselves or slip out of themselves.
Usually what I do is do a single braid. Then I will take the braid and ill either roll it like a LWB or a cinnabun.
Something simple that I usually do with my unbraided hair that usually stays up with most everything!
But I cannot get them to stay up when theyre braided.... any suggestions? Am I doing this wrong?

If I do a braided cinnabun it takes 4638937638439 bobby pins. And it works better if I pin as I go rather than only pinning when I'm done. If I want a braided bun to stay put, I'll usually do a center held bun like a nautilus and hold it with a stick or a flexi.
I've wondered if different pins would hold a cinnabun better. I only have regular bobby pins at the moment.

claw clips, one on each side or sticks, here it is a link to a pic with me wearing them, I prefer them to sticks as the tail never swings out

Or do a braid, slide the stick through the base of the braid and wind it around it, secure the end with another stick make the end of the stick or Upin pass through the hair tie loop, it never fails, here it is how I do it, unfortunately I did not film me putting the other stick.

That is how I wear my hair every single day. It was life changing to find out a way of secure your hair and protect it at the same time. I am the braided bun girl definitely. Cannot recommend it enough.

I either use 2 or 3 spin pins or 4 or 5 crinkled amish pins. As long as I catch scalp hair and braid hair, they hold like a rock.

I use either spin pins or a flexi-8. With both buns, I french braid to give it something more to anchor to. I usually use smaller spin pins on the first loop of a cinnabun and longer ones on the outside. They interlock a bit and I can wear that bun for a vigorous karate class. I don't have any extra tips for using a flexi except taht it stays better on damp hair for me.

I wonder what I’m doing wrong then
Because my hair isn’t even that long and 4 spin pins just barely hold it up.

Haha this! I use startling amounts of both bobby and amish pins for these and pin during the process.
Though I found that it holds better if you use hairties for the top and the bottom of the braid. I'm currently on my second day of a braided bun that holds like steel because of this, and was a variation on a medieval style I found because of the historical hair topic here. Though, note, that there are still 4638937638439 bobby pins in there as well ;)

Ligeia Noire thanks, that's really helpful indeed, I'm going to try with a hairstick as well!

Two problems I always run into with pinning buns is catching enough scalp hair, and keeping the pins in. I can’t even get a vortex bun to hold with pins because the blinking things just slide back out. And cinnibuns are stick/fork only with few exceptions. Technique is key when using pins for anything.

A couple of solutions I have found however. I can sew vortex buns down using ribbon and a darning needle. Providing I’m careful about making sure I hit scalp on most of the passes, the bun will hold, no issues. It may take a few tries to get the postitioning right for the ribbon. And I use spin pins for cinnibuns. I need to screw down fairly firm to make sure I get the scalp hair; and I have to use 4 pins forming a cross in the middle. I also get the ends to lock together if I aim right, and they hold much better for me.

Bobby pins are reserved for single strands and tails being tucked in if they pop out.

Hey of course you have to adapt the claws and sticks to your hair volume. They make small claws too and maybe you only need one! As well as one stick. Plenty of fine haired ladies use sticks and then secure the tail with a Upin. That's what i meant. What and how to use and then adapt to your needs.

I just bought a pair of sticks last night, justified by this thread. 😀

Oh, and Of the Fae it cracked me up that you used the exact number of pins. :rollin:

I often do a braided bun and manage to secure it quite well with one clawclip at the top part of the bun.

Try spin pins. I use the same technique ligeia uses: insert the first spin pin like you'd insert a stick, then coil the braid under the spin pin. Then insert the second spin pin crossing the first one. And so on. I think I should do a tutorial about this one day?

I did it! One stick and three or four bobby pins and it feels pretty good. I can see where a second stick would be good, too. Thanks for the tips, Ligeia!

Thank you for starting this thread! I thought I was doing something drastically wrong, or my hair was being stubborn :p
Braiding no problem, bunning no problem but braided buns equals fail!
But to be honest I only ever use a fork, stick or flexi, never a zillion pins

Those look great ladies, yes some hair has more grip than others, fine silkier hair tends to slip but if you secure the tail, it helps a lot, very nice buns again.

I shall try my braided bun using your method with my much shorter length hair. Though I would like to add, I love your huge bun. Your hair is gorgeously long and super thick:toast:

Another solution would be to braid tighter. It works for me on the 4th day hair. You can alternatively try a ponytail base, tightly braid your ponytail then pin it.
