Does anyone get hair casts? Is there anything to reduce or stop them?
I've spoken with one dermatologist and plan to speak with another. The first just told me that I'm itchy because it's dandruff and gave me some prescription shampoos that only made the hair cast situation worse. I'm trying to do some research on my own to figure out what treatments to ask the dermatologist about but I figured I could also ask here and see if anyone had any input for me.

I only get them when I go too long without shampooing, or miss a spot. My only advice would to be try washing more.

I wanted to know what a hair cast is too. I think this is what's being discussed:

Edited to add the girl in this video (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aQZhcMEF2tQ) says Head & Shoulders Clinical Strength shampoo helped with this condition a lot.

Head and shoulder has been suggested maybe try that?
This was an excerpt:
The condition may respond to keratolytic or coal tar-containing shampoos.
A volume of 0.025% retinoic acid was used by Taïeb et al.[14] and was found to be effective

Isn't that what comes out the end of the hair when you pluck it? :hmm:
I never thought that that sheath could be on the hair itself when the hair was still "plugged in".

Hmm, i get those flakes/casts(not sure) when my hair is dirty after 3-4 days of washing. It looks similar.

Yes, it's little bits around the hair that look like nits, but they aren't. Mine aren't as elongated as some of the pictures. Some are easy to brush off, but most need to be pulled off kind of like actual nits. Sometimes I even accidentally end up pulling out the hair because the root is weaker than the force I need to slide the cast off. (Believe me, I've checked and combed and checked just in case they were actually nits, but they're not.) I'd probably be better off leaving them there rather than chancing pulling out hair, but there you have it.
I've been using Head and Shoulders for years. In fact that's what I switched back to after getting tired of the prescriptions not doing anything and it did reduce the number, but I still have them.
Coal tar shampoo was the next thing the dermatologist wanted me to try, but I cannot stand the smell.
I wash my scalp every other day. They can be visible just hours after washing, in some cases. I'm not even sure that washing removes them all. Scratching or touching my scalp seems to encourage them. If I BBB that part of the scalp a lot before washing that seems to help keep them away longer.
Lapushka, I don't think it's the root sheath? I'd also think it odd that it could move out with the hair still attached to the scalp. It does seem like a sheath, but maybe not of the root.

Oh wow I get these too! I've always honestly just assumed it was dandruff, but did note that they're much longer and not "flaky", like dandruff flakes...really weird.

Use a lice comb to remove them! Make sure your hair is completely detangled first and be gentle. That's how I got mine off.

I get these sometimes but I just let them do their thing and let them wash out on their own.
I’ve pulled them off maybe once or twice. I try not to though.

I've tried! Oddly enough the lice comb doesn't get all of them. And I'm using the sort with the metal tines all packed next to each other with no spaces...

I think this is so weird. So far the only time I've seen such "blubber" on a hair shaft was after a plucked hair (esp. bikini region, I know TMI), there I get a lot of them with shafts on them (after the hair is plucked). I have never in my life seen these on a hair that was still attached, but apparently it happens.
