View Full Version : Strange Hair

My hair gets wavier when it's wet than when it's dry eg. getting out of the shower it looks almost 2b/c, when oiled 2a/b and when fully dry 2a.
Most people's hair seems to straighten when wet.
Is my hair unusual or am I just reading other people's posts wrong?

My hair looks like it's definitely somewhere in the 2s when wet (i.e. damp, not dripping) then straightens as it dries too, ending up in the 1s :)

Sometimes it’s the same for me (my hair changes from shower to shower just due to the nature of its particular wavy pattern). Today, I thought I’d play around with my natural texture. Usually I just wrap it straight. Anyway, it looked pretty wavy this time while wet so I was expecting big voluminous waves or something lol but no, it started to dry very straight, and I don’t use hair products (besides light hair oils once in a while but I digress) so it’s not like it was weighed down. I ended up scrunching it back to life ;) Most of the time though, my hair does get significantly wavier as it dries. My hair is pretty healthy by the way, so overall, I think it’s just fine to have “strange” hair or strange hair days here and there. Doesn’t necessarily mean something bad :)

Off topic but I love your ava and sig. pics. Gorgeous hair!
Do you get it that straight without using heat styling? If so, how? We're both 2a/2b and the only way I can get my hair that straight is with a dryer, or wait for day 2 post wash..lol..

My hair is sometimes wavier when it's wet too. I think it depends on the products I used when washing as well as the weather and humidity in my bathroom.

I have the same problem too, often. I think it's more because my hair is weighed down to be honest than because it naturally straightens as it dries. Sometimes my hair will just end up drying a bit straighter than what it looked like while wet though. When it dries rather straight when it was wavier while wet, it always feels like it has too much product, didn't feel like it was shampooed enough, or is just weighed down in some way. When my hair dries its waviest, it always feels more bouncy and lightweight. I can't seem to find products that my hair likes still, so my hair is usually wavier after I clarify.
If your hair doesn't feel weighed down or gross when it dries straighter, then I don't think there's anything strange going on. :) It might be because you are in the low 2's for texture, and my hair definitely can vary a lot in texture from sorta wavy sorta straight to properly wavy. If there's a significant change in texture, then I would suggest maybe trying a different routine to see if you can bring out your potential waves more (if you want to). :)

My hair is the same. Humidity makes them 2b, but dry it's 2a and sometimes 1c/2a.

My hair curls when wet, post shampoo, and in high humidity.
In dry air is it sleek/wavy.
Sounds normal to me

My hair gets curly when wet and stays curly when dry.
Unless I comb it out, then it relaxes, turning mostly into waves.
How do you treat your hair as it is straightening? It could be getting weighed down or brushed out.
Did you ever do a "don't touch it" typing photo and see what its natural state really is?

Thanks everyone for your feedback. :)
Nice to know my hairs not weird or damaged.

I don't treat my hair as it's drying.
I do comb mostly but I have just left sometimes, like this time, which is how I noticed it happens.
Haven't taken any pics of my hair but I have done a typing and looked at it, and left on its own my hair is definitely 2a but my hair has already gone from a 1a so it could just be getting more wavy.

Aww thanks so much!! And correct, I don’t use heat :D I was super surprised when I tried out hair wrapping and got really straight hair!
I haven't come across any hair wrapping videos which work for me, but this one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4i_W19d3IDk) is the closest to what does give me straight hair. Just imagine that she has wet hair though, lol. Also, unlike that girl, I gently detangle pretty damp hair in under 30 seconds with a wide tooth comb, and then just wrap it around without further combing. I guess I just linked that video because around 2:50, with that clip she put in, is what all my hair (all wrapped) looks like before I let it air dry. I place the clip at the front though, but whatever. Sometimes it takes 1 clip, sometimes 2-3, and I slide them slightly a few times as the hair dries to avoid any marks. Oh and to get the top back part straight (it’s tricky to get it to wrap with the rest of the hair sometimes), I’ll just wrap that anywhere that works and use another condor clip to secure it. I never sleep with this, just air dry for a few hours, or sometimes sit near a room temperature fan here and there to speed it up. To maintain the straight hair, I personally do nothing, as it stays straight.
As you can tell, it all just takes a good amount of experimenting and customizing until things work!

Wavier/curlier when wet, definitely. If I get oiled hair wet, it spiral curls all over the place.

For me it's about the same wet as dry. Especially when I run my stylers through, it sort of "enhances" the wave a slight bit even.
Do you comb or brush and not style, because I think that may be key.

Mine is "wavy" when damp, 1b/1c. Dries 1a straight, and doesn't become wavy or more textured if I apply more water or the humidity is high. For me, I think it's because of higher friction between the strands of hair when the hair is damp.
