View Full Version : Change of light, change of shade (hair colour)

I'm not sure if there was ever a thread made on this, I know I've seen photos around of it, including my own when I joined in at some point, but not a thread dedicated to it.

My hair can differ quite a bit depending on the light, which confused me a great deal when I was younger, so much that I ended up thinking that my hair wasn't blonde.
This is how my hair can look, first one (top left) is in sunlight and the rest are taken indoors with natural light from the windows.

https://i.imgur.com/MHSIjjX.png

the image looks huge when I put it in, but hopefully it isn't when I post the thread *fingers crossed*

I would love to see how your hair colour can look in different lights! I've only payed attention to my own hair, so seeing how other colours may look in different lights would be so much fun :o

Oh, that's beautiful! I love how those high(or low)lights looks in your hair :)

This effect also has to do with camera exposure. So you can even get a totally different color in the same environmental setting, taken just seconds apart. In real life a hair color typically is pretty consistent compared to how different it can look in pictures. There are of course variations depending on lighting and such, but it's often not as prominent as what you can get from a pic. I'll see if I can find some examples.

Of course, but at least in my photos, the difference is mainly the different lights. If the photos look very different from the real deal I tend to fix them.

I love this idea for a thread btw!! :D

This is what my hair typically looks like in bright sunlight:
https://s26.postimg.org/su9wnsp0p/sun1.jpg https://s26.postimg.org/65kpo8fcp/sun2.jpg

And here is an overexposed picture, the difference is not huge, but my hair appears about one shade lighter (especially noticeable at the crown area).

This is my hair in overcast weather (this is a much better representation of my haircolor then the pics with direct sunlight):

Lucid, my henna is now basically invisible except in natural light, when it’s quite noticeable. My still-a-little-coppery-blonde natural highlights are weirdly invisible in glass-filtered sunlight but noticeable under warm white bulbs. The differences aren’t as dramatic as with what you can find in photos because of color warmth correction that our brains automatically do, but it’s still there!

If my hair is overexposed, it will bring out all of the copper, reddish colors, if it’s underexposed, everything will blend back to it’s darker sandy brown color.

If shadows aren’t trying to form, or the sun is shining from overhead it will bring out those slight golden tips I have on my ends.

Beautiful, lucid! :D I love the hairstyle you got in the last photo.
My hair can also get overexposed in direct sunlight, the one I had in the OP is a bit more yellow than usual, but that was how my hair looked that day (it was a bit more intense sunlight than what I would usually venture out in), in more "normal" sunlight it tends to look like this:

http://oi62.tinypic.com/2h7knq0.jpg

And just because I was already digging around in my old photos, one in the shadow (weird shadow though, very sunny day so...intense shadow?):

http://oi62.tinypic.com/2ymgd9l.jpg

I don't know what I would call the natural state of my hair, maybe the top second from the left and bottom second from the left? The bottom left corner one I'd say is a pretty normal shade for my hair as well since that's how it usually looks at the mirror in my room... but I've seen my hair in all those shades when looking in the mirror, so what do I know, maybe my hair comes across as something else to others.

My hair goes from a purple-y dark brown (like my avatar) in the shade and indoors, to a dark brown with golden hues in the sun. If the sun ever comes out one day I'll take a picture.

Gorgeous shades everyone!

Oh yes, I get this often. In natural light my hair tends to have a warm cast. In artificial light it tends to be more cool and ashy looking. With henna, it makes a difference between warm red vs. cooler (not burgundy but shading that way). And in some lights, you almost can't see any red in my hair at all.

I don't have pictures of the difference, though, I don't think...

This is just a sampling. Four days, four shades. In four more days I'd have even MORE shades. Chameleon hair or something. And my camera is definitely partly responsible. I never know what color my hair is. Sometimes I surprise myself in public restrooms!

My hair has always looked SO much redder in sunlight, to the point where I had classmates in grade school - who had only ever seen me in indoor classroom lighting - get confused when I referred to myself as a redhead.

I get color change in many different lighting. I will have to post a comparison photo soon.

I also get shine difference. My hair looks HORRIBLE in the lighting at the grocery store, It so dull, looks dry and dead. I'm guessing it's because it's a soft muddy kind of lighting.

Thank you so much, AmaryllisRed, Estrid, AutobotsAttack, and Dendra!! When I was really little (like 5 or 6) my hair was more of a chestnut brown, but it's gotten consistently redder as I've grown older (especially where my hair gets the most sun at the temples). Sometimes it looks like more of a coppery red in the sunlight, like this:
https://s17.postimg.org/kkj4i4nen/IMG_5126cropscaled.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/tsbcytugr/)

but occasionally the lighting is just right for those deeper red shades!

I’m really fascinated by the alternating streaks of color in your moustache and beard. Are those natural? I imagine they must be, it would probably be too difficult to achieve that effect using dye. That’s so unique and special! I have never ever seen that color pattern or anything similar to it before.

Two words. Wolfman Jack.

Yes, it's natural. They used to be much more pronounced before I grayed to this degree, and they're always received favorably by the judges at the competitions.

Been considering hitting the beard with a light coppery blond to lessen the contrast on the sides. I used to have white stripes in a reddish beard. Now I have reddish stripes in a gray beard.

I'm not immune to ego!

It's true that I'm slowly turning into Gandalf...the problem being that he already competes in my category.

Wolfman Jack does not have the inversely shaded moustache to complete the checkerboard effect. =p How long have you been growing your beard for?

January was four years though early last year I cut half of it off. Split ends, dead tips, and so forth. It was long overdue, and by necessity was more aggressive than I would have ever done otherwise.

Heck, I still miss my length.

It's coming back, though. And healthier than ever. Damned split ends.

Thank you christib13 :o Yes my hair colour is natural, I think the waves make the lighter top layer stand out more as you can see more of the under layer, which is a shade darker. When I straighten (I know I shouldn't) my hair the colour looks much more uniform, like in this photo from 2 years ago. I should add that this was taken in the summer so all of my hair had been sunkissed.
