View Full Version : Late night emotional chop

In a moment of madness I’ve just chopped off my hair. I don’t what length it is now but at a guess it’s probably just past apl, it was about 1.5 inches from waist.
I didn’t even take my time to ensure a decent cut. It literally took me 2 seconds to grab it into a pony tail and 1 second to chop.
I’m quite sure I’m going to be very peed off in the morning. I haven’t even looked in the mirror to see the damage. I hate my hair.

I've so been there, and it sucks, and I'm sorry :grouphug:
But it will grow back! Luckily you just went to apl and didn't decide to buzz it all off in the middle of the night like I did.... It could be a lot worse I promise...
Word to the wise--if you need to even the hemline up post-chop, give yourself some time to cool off first, or go to someone who you trust to just take the minimum off. I've gone way shorter than I ever intended to several times trying to "fix" what I'd done.
Big hugs, it'll be ok.

Oh my (((hugs)))
Well something brought you to that action and you may feel better having gotten rid of what bothered you. Layers did that to me a couple of times ;)
Perhaps it will be healthier going forward... and thicker?
When you are less emotional....take your time and tidy it up with 'Feye's' or 'Under the Chin' trims...then bling it up and do whatever styles you can...stage after stage.
What is done is done....enjoy the journey growing back..... it will be faster and healthier this time :cheer:

I'm sorry it happened to you. I feel.the need to cut my hair when I reach a breakdown point at times but never had the guts to pick up the scissor or a razor. It will grow back and may it be more healthy and beautiful .

This might sound wildly unhelpful but my last emotional chop put me off future ones, so hopefully this helps get it out of your system!

Thanks guys, this is the place for positive support :)
I’ve not assessed it yet as I can’t have my morning shower as one of the kids left a hot tap running. Had to be today when we all have to get up and out. So a bad ending last night and a bad start this morning lol. It’s looking from the front to be about five inches gone.
Hmmm positives, my hemline will (should) be great, it’ll dry quicker, and I might be able to wear it down without paranoia that it’s thin.

It happens.
Now you can grow it back more beautiful than it was before :flower:
Don't let it upset you too much and try turning this experience into something positive.

Aww I completely get the emotional chop, resisting that urge is bloody difficult!! I had a tantrum last month because it wasn't growing so logically(?) decided to chop half an inch to "help" it XD
Definitely look on the bright side with thicker hemline though!

Turns out I love it!!! It looks so much thicker. I blow dried it straight and gave the ends a bit of a scrunch. What it looks like in a hour or so will be the test....2a hair and all, has a mind of its own :)

Even before you said you liked it there was some great advice on here, so you would have been fine either way :beerchug:

I had an emotional chop to from MBL (about 2” to waist) to shoulder length a couple weeks ago, late at night too. I loved it after I cleaned it up and cut in bangs, but now I have mixed feelings about it. Every one complimented me on the new cut, and how curly my hair is now, it’s 3a at this lenth, but the curls stretches out to 2c/3a when it gets just a few inches longer than this and it stretches out even more to 2c once it gets past bsl.
Hopefully we both can find some emotional peace.

I have been there and I’m sorry you had to go through it. I’m sure it doesn’t look bad. Just think of it in a positive way however you can. I’ve had urges to do the same recently but have to keep telling myself that my hair is not the root of my problem (horrible pun)..
I hope you are doing well and if you need to discuss anything I am here for you!!

I missed this message. It looks great! :D And comparing it to your avatar, you didn't lose that much length. It is still APL+, so at least you still have some length to it. Yeah, it looks *really* good!

Thankyou all for your kind words. It’s so nice to get words of encouragement and support. I won’t reply individually as there too many!!!
I took 5 inches off all in all and I am closer to apl to bsl.
Today I have been on a university open day, it was windy and snowy not to mention freezing blooming cold haha. Good weather for testing hair though. Anyway, the front of my hair stayed looking fabulous, big bouncy waves, the type that people get from a hot iron. The back looked a bit tatty after all that, but hey what can you expect. So for me it’s past the looks good for more than an hour test!
At the minute I am happy, I think I’ve got a full hemline for the first time ever, I can wear it down and get it to look nice with minimal effort (I’m lazy with hair styles), it’s still long enough to wear up and the length suits me.
Will I regret it in a few weeks? Maybe. But hair needs to be enjoyed doesn’t it? I have though made a decision to go for quality over length. So the length I am now going to aim for is going to be based on my hemline. As a thin/finey my hair can’t take the big sheds, it just shows up too much.
As a side note, this morning I examined the ends of the hair I cut off and it was in great condition, I only found two split ends. Only in the life of a lhc’er 😂

I can only pray that you find peace with your hair, from this point on hopefully, and that your hair growth journey from this point on happens to be a much more successful, and less stressful one for you, for sure, than it was before.
Good luck! :)

I was worried too when I saw the title! Glad you're happy. I must say I talk my bestie off her "my hair is thin" chops. I think she's nuts because I love her hair. If you do want to grow it long again, and it's thin again, just remember thin hair DOES NOT EQUAL unattractive hair :flower:

I'm a quality over length person, too, and have snipped for the same reasons. With wavy, wispy-fine hair that has issues behaving at the hemline (clumping often equals stringy on me), which is especially so when it's thinner (thanks to my layers and white underlayer playing invisi-hair), I can totally understand your frustrations, and applaud your outcome! Your hair looks sooooooooo good! :rockerdud

Yaaaaa :cheer: do it!! Cut it off, feels so good sometimes!!! I took post partum out on my hair -- 4 cuts & 5 colors in 6 months when I had my first child. I feel ya.
And if you decide to grow long again, we will be here... enjoy it.

I did the same thing a few days ago except not in a late night emotional cut. Been there done that soooo many times. This time I pondered and brooded and pondered some more for about a month and then over a period of a few days I kept trimming inches. Now I think I'm probably just about where you are lengthwise. I was not so close to waist when I started though, probably more MBL.
Your hair looks great! I know what you mean about not having to worry if it looks thin or not. I agree with quality over quantity for myself too. I love a full hemline on myself. Congratulations on such a great cut! :) I am glad you are happy with it.

It looks much nicer with the chop! Glad you ended up liking it~ I had a freak out and dyed my hair red (then hated it) then dyed my hair back to brown. It feels so damaged now and I hate the colour. I'm going to go to the hairdressers to get the colour removed and to get some of the dead ends cut off

It is still long enough to do most buns. I think a disc bun should be perfect and best holding. Hope you have some lovely toys to wear too.

Your hair is SO healthy. With nice thick ends!! I bet those nice ends feel so good. You’ll be doing great.
I myself had to maintain at shoulder for about two years after a bunch of bleach damage, and I also have fine wavy hair, so I totally understand wanting to get that nice thick(er) hemline. It does seem to grow faster once the ends are healthy!
