My favorite shampoo was discontinued here, it was the Garnier Fructis Pure Volume or Vita Boost Fresh, but I managed to find a few different versions online. So I got the "Pure Fresh" one and when I read the ingredients list, I was shocked. First, it has citric acid as the third ingredient...Isn't that too high? Then it has ammonium hydroxide as the sixth ingredient  I use ammonia hair dye, but what in the world is ammonia doing in a shampoo?? Is it a bad formulation, or am I too much of a noob to understand it?

This is the ingredients list: AQUA / WATER, SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE, CITRIC ACID, COCAMIDOPROPYL BETAINE, GLYCOL DISTEARATE, AMMONIUM HYDROXIDE, NIACINAMIDE, COCO-BETAINE, SACCHARUM OFFICINARUM EXTRACT / SUGAR CANE EXTRACT, COCOS NUCIFERA FRUIT EXTRACT / COCONUT FRUIT EXTRACT, CUCUMIS SATIVUS FRUIT EXTRACT / CUCUMBER FRUIT EXTRACT, SODIUM CHLORIDE, SODIUM BENZOATE, HYDROXYCITRONELLAL, SODIUM ACETATE, HYDROXYPROPYLTRIMONIUM LEMON PROTEIN, SODIUM HYDROXIDE, PHENOXYETHANOL, PPG-5- CETETH-20, PEG-55 PROPYLENE GLYCOL OLEATE, POLYQUATERNIUM-10, SALICYLIC ACID, CAMELLIA SINENSIS LEAF EXTRACT, LINALOOL, BENZYL ALCOHOL, XANTHAN GUM, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL, ALPHA-ISOMETHYL IONONE, CAPRYLOYL GLYCINE, PYRUS MALUS FRUIT EXTRACT / APPLE FRUIT EXTRACT, CARBOMER, PYRIDOXINE HCl, GERANIOL, CITRUS LIMON PEEL EXTRACT / LEMON PEEL EXTRACT, POTASSIUM SORBATE, LEUCONOSTOC/RADISH ROOT FERMENT FILTRATE, HEXYLENE GLYCOL, HEXYL CINNAMAL, GLYCERIN, PARFUM / FRAGRANCE. First time i hear ammonia being in a shampoo. Ammonia is not a good ingredient as this is used in cigarettes and hair dyes. Have you experienced dryness when trying this shampoo? Or anything else? I guess this is not a good mix, a sulfate shampoo with ammonia, i dont know, it may harmful. Better lets hear and others opinion :)

I didn't try it yet, I just got it today. I'm honestly afraid to use it.

According to what I've read, it's used as a ph adjuster in shampoos.
Regarding the citric acid, it may be high up on the list, but the truth us we don't know how much of it is being used in the shampoo.

Since you purchased them, might as well try and see if you like the results.

Yes often there is sodium hydroxide (lye) in shampoo too, at the bottom of the list. It is also used as a pH adjuster. For lye it is very different when it's the second or third ingredient.

I think it's nothing to worry about. :flower: But that's me.

I'd wait until the true ingredient knowledgeable people turn up here before panicking. ;)

I agree with the previous comments, it is likely being used as a PH adjuster in this product. It is not a common ingredient for shampoos but you will find it in Garnier and Loreal. COSDNA also list a Body Shop shampoo with this ingredient. Like anything else your hair will tell you if it likes it or not :flower:

I don't know about ammonium hydroxide (chemistry A Level was a decade ago!) but I do know ammonium lauryl sulphate and ammonium laureth sulphate are used in shampoos as supposedly less irritating surfactants than the sodium sulphates. So while I can't reassure you it's definitely safe, you also don't need to be automatically alarmed by seeing 'ammonium xyx' :)

I was alarmed because it's the same one as in my dyes.

Oh I see! Well in that case I can definitely understand that, and I think in your position I would be wary of using it as well! :flower:
