are metal hair sticks damaging?

hi all, i'm recently new to using hair sticks on my hip/tailbone length hair and i only have one. i apologise if this is a dumb question but, something has occured to me! i was always told that using hair ties with a metal bit holding the band together was super damaging for your hair. so i was wondering, is my metal hair stick damaging? although, it doesn't tug on my hair or make it full of knots. but i'm worried about it now! just incase it is, i have ordered a wooden hair fork and will give that a go once it comes :)

The metal ends are damaging because they are sharp and break the hair.

I believe a metal hair stick, if not rough, should present no problems. It's not the metal, it's the surface finishing.

As long as they are nicely smooth and no roughness or sharp edges, they are fine. Where did you get that lovely hair stick?

No it's not a problem.

The reason the metal bits on the elastics are problematic is because often hair got caught between the metal and the elastic, breaking it, getting stuck there.

If the stick is smooth, then no problem.

I use aluminum and titanium steel sticks all the time, and no issues whatsoever!

I actually think metal sticks are probably the best! I've had some really pretty wooden sticks that unfortunately cracked and developed sharp bits. As long as a stick doesn't have any rough bits or parts that catch on your hair it's all good.

I bought one similar to this recently. Once I receive it I'll see how the texture plays with my hair. I suspect that the raised design on the stick would damage some people's hair and not others. As mentioned above it also probably depends on how rough the raised bits are. If they are rough I'd guess that one could paint it over with a layer of clear lacquer and make it non damaging.

Does anyone know how long your hair nears to be at a minimal length to use a hair stick like this? My hair is almost APL so I didn’t know if I can even attempt these yet TIA

How thick is your hair? i, ii or iii? With iii hair my hair was hip before I could comfortably bun (LWB, lazy wrap bun). Even for ii hair, I think you might need a bit more length than APL.

Even with iii hair, one could probably use a stick in a half up (or quarter up) at APL :flower:
