Hi all, I'm looking into making a hair style directory thread, most of the existing ones contain dead links and none are stickied so they get lost easily.

Here is what I'm thinking.

Post 1: Explanation of thread
Post 2: Alphabetical list of hair styles
Post 3: Alphabetical list of braids with links (include link to Show Me Your Braids thread)
Post 4: Alphabetical list of buns with links (include link to Show Me Your Buns thread)
Post 5: Alphabetical list of ponytails with links
Post 6: Alphabetical list of other styles with links
Post 7: Alphabetical list of tools

Each detailed list contains links to tutorials, links to LHC threads discussing the style, and tags that identify information about the bun such as if it is center held, has modifications for extreme length, or requires special tools.

Here are the styles I've got so far. Please read through and make sure that I'm not missing any and that I don't have duplicates in there under different names (I already caught quite a few, but may have missed some). Some of these are hard to track down, as they are from OLD LHC style lists with dead links and I can't find tutorials (or there is no consistency in what is called and Easy Hairstick Bun) and those are the ones that are likely to be duplicates. I don't have a structural description for what Hypnotica does in many of her buns where she basically halves the length of her hair by twisting one half inside the other.

Current list. I've been adding test descriptions to the Test-based Hair Tutorials (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=137377) thread as I feel capable. I eventually want all the styles to have text descriptions in that thread as images are not as permanent as we might like (see recent Photobucket photo deaths) and even many of the videos there were linked to hairstyles previously no longer exist. I've marked the styles with an "x" if I've found or written a description for it.

If anyone wants to provide descriptions, please do! Just put them over in the Text-based thread and I'll see them. Or, if you can improve upon an existing one, please do!

What would be a good short term to describe the structure common to both Elling Woman's Bun and Amish Braids? They use basic braids with short sections of braid and then additional sections added. The technique creates gaps or loops that are then used as anchors for wrapping or intertwining the braided lengths.

2)
Is there a common term for French, Dutch, Lace braids and Cornrows? These are braids that incorporate sections of hair close to the scalp with each over/under.

From comments on the Braid Thread, I'm going with "root braid".

I did find this description of a Goddess Bun in an old thread:

Isn't the Goddess bun something like part your hair from ear to ear, bun the hair in the back in a simple cinnamon bun (or if you want a bigger bun; a sock bun). Then take the front hair, part it in the middle and then you twist each part towards the top of your head and wrap the twisted parts around your bun.

Just something I noticed on my phone is that for some reason I can't see a big chunk of text on the right side, I can't even scroll to the right to view the whole thread - is there anything we can do to make the thread phone-friendly? Am I the only one? I'm using chrome on an android phone.

I went with "root braid" as the braiding is usually continuous close to the roots of the hair. I considered cornrows, but it seemed that terms is applied to multiple smaller braids that lie next to each other.

The problem I have with “Pencil Bun” is that a pencil is just a stick and can be used in any bun you can secure with a stick.

I learned a "pencil bun' from youtube a million years ago for shorter hair; you started with the stick pointing down next the the ponytail, twisted it around until the stick was facing up and then stabbed it down to catch the scalp hair and left the ends sticking out kind of peacock twisty looking. That being said, I can't find the video anymore, and the term is so vague it's somewhat useless. >.<

Secondly, for 'pencil bun' I've seen all sorts of variations on youtube. Lots of them are kinda LWBs, or twisting and stabbing like sumidha described. Perhaps you could choose one that's not already duplicated in the list, and then in the entry for pencil bun put 'could also refer to ... ' with relevant links to other entries?

Also all the ballet buns I've seen on youtube are basically very high pinned cinnabuns, with an exceptionally tight ponytail base and half a can of hairspray - not hair-friendly at all! If there is an alternative, LHC-suitable type of ballet bun, that would be awesome.

Okay, so this contribution refers to the text tutorial for a scarf bun here http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=137377&page=8&p=3513673&viewfull=1#post3513673 I can't access the original blog post about the style so I could be slightly off, but I think I can see in my head what the instructions mean and will try to explain a little more clearly. This is clarification for the parts in bold in the post:

Wrap the length of the bottom half of the ponytail around the scarf, near the knot. Then roll the scarf and hair up the ponytail, towards your head. All the length should now be wrapped like a tube around the scarf.

STEP 2
When everything is rolled up, tie the ends of the scarf around behind the bun to secure it. Then tuck the ends of the scarf round inside the ends of the 'tube' of rolled hair.

(1) Would there be an option to start a complementary gallery? Maybe based on credited member photos (only from people who would offer them or allow it, of course). If there's not a video link, it's not very easy to find out how the style looks like. Small previews would be ideal, but there's probably a good reason why they don't exist yet. And, this is especially relevant for newbies, I often didn't even know how some of the accessories looked like and had to search for them (often googling "longhaircommunity" + "relevant hair toy" to figure out what it is :D). So reading "French twist comb" or "Finishing pins" isn't very informative without knowing what it stands for, if it makes sense. So the gallery could be relevant both for hairstyles and for tools. If hairstyles are too complicated, then at least for the tools. :)

(2) What about a column "also known as"? I know that if you find the alternative name, it links you to the appropriate option (e.g. "Mexican Revolution Buns --> see Princess Leia Buns"), but I would find it very helpful to have them all grouped together to see what's basically synonyms. 1) I think the best way to do a photo gallery would be on a separate thread.

The first problem with photo heavy threads is the bandwidth they take to load, it can be very challenging for people with slow or limited internet connections to load those threads. The second problem is preserving the photos for an extended period of time. If you look through old threads, most of the photos are missing, and the reasons why are numerous. The third problem, as you mention, is permission. The fourth problem is the inevitable perception of preference. Whose pictures do you choose/accept?

You could start a thread asking people to post their best pictures of any style with a simple picture + style name format. That thread could be searched by people looking for specific styles. Do you want to keep people from commenting and congesting the thread with noise? How would you do that?

You could start a thread listing styles and linking to photo examples (bypassing the need to ask for permission to repost) but how do you choose which pictures to link to without making some people feel left out?

You could start your own blog post doing all the styles yourself and turn commenting off. I'm down to the last irritating styles on my to-do list. (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/entry.php?b=136922)


I'm not dismissing the idea out of hand. I'd be delighted to hear simple solutions I've not thought of or cheer someone on in attempting to create such a thing!



My solution to providing as much access to pictures with the least fuss (and characters per post, and respecting privacy) was to provide up to four links per style: Text description, Style of the Month, Video, and Topic specific thread. We are slowly (one month at a time) making our way through the styles via the Style of the Month threads, and people can and do dig up old Style threads and add new pictures to them.

If there isn't a video link, make a video, or plead with our video making members to make one for us. If there is a specific thread for a style that was missed, bring it to the mods attention, and it will get added.

I thought treble clef bun was done kind of like a cinnabun with one twist of an outer loop to create the top of the treble clef, whereas an equilibrium bun is done as a cinnabun but with the hair folded back on itself to start with?

Nice idea for a picture thread and interesting points. If there were a picture thread collating them all, perhaps it could be specified only to use certain hosting sites (e.g. imgur tends to delete them after a while of inactivity whereas somewhere like Flickr seems to last indefinitely) and to provide a link in case the picture disappears but is still hosted?

Hello! I think that TatsuOni´s bun - tatsilus bun - is a great bun and it could be added to the Thesaurus. At least I cannot see it there yet? Maybe I´m wrong. Here is her video tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04M88z-ZYbw . I would love to help and write instructions, but I am really absolutely no good at them, I could not describe any such process properly in my own language, let alone in English.
Also I can think of lapis_lazuli´s bun, her kind of inverted log roll, it´s quick and easy and she has described it in some thread (that I cannot remember unfortunately), but it was so easy that even I could do it, based only on written text.
