View Full Version : 7 years of growth and 2 years on LHC [with pictures]

Today marks 7 year of hair growth and 2 years on LHC for me (yes, I randomly created my account on the same date as my last cut).
So, in January 2011, I decided on a whim to cut my APL hair back to about chin length, even though I wanted to grow it long. It looked like this:

I hated that style, and the hairdresser had done such a bad job that I had needed to cut a bit more myself. That's when I decided that it was time to truly grow my hair. I've only gone back to a hairdresser once, and that was in the winter of 2012. I don't have a lot of good length pictures from those early years of growth, but here's what I found.
You'll notice that up until I joined the LHC, my hair was straightened on most pictures. I never really did it every day, but I tended to do it when I knew I was going to have pictures taken, because I was stupidly convinced that my hair only looked good that way. And when I started taking pictures to record my length, I would do it because I wanted my (naturally wavy) hair to look as long as possible.
This was the very first French braid I did on myself, in October that year. The picture was taken in the evening, so it's quite undone, but I still like it.

The next one was in March, 2013. When I posted it on Facebook, I got tons of comments about how long my hair was, which makes me laugh today.

This was in April, 2014. I had told everyone the previous day (on April Fools') that I had done a drastic cut.

This one was in February, 2015.

The next picture is pretty blurry, but it shows how wonky my hemline was after 3.5 years without a single trim. My mother offered to give me one the next month, and she trimmed 2-3 inches. At the time I was a little annoyed that she had cut that much, but I quickly saw how much it had been needed.

The next two were taken in January, 2016, when I joined the LHC. As you can see, my hemline was definitely much neater. I was somewhere between tailbone and classic at that point. Those pictures were actually the very last time I used a flat iron on my hair.

This was in January, 2017, when I reached fingertip length.

And the final picture was taken last weekend. Although my ends don't want to lay flat, you can see that I've passed mid-thigh (marked by the elastic band).

Mid-thigh was my goal length. I have no idea if I'll keep growing now (I'm tempted to grow to knee just to be able to say I have done it), or if this is the end of my growing journey. We'll see as time goes by, I guess. I do have other ideas for my hair though, like dying the ends a fun colour.
I had first found LHC because I was looking for hairstyle ideas that worked on hair longer than waist, and then I started reading other posts and decided that I might as well join. I have learned a lot about haircare, experimented many hairstyles, discovered hairsticks... This has been a fun journey so far.

Wow, incredible progress! Such patience! I love these pictures, too, because they give me an idea of how long it will take to get to classic and FTL for me. I'm around the length of your February 2015 picture now. :)

Amazing! Are those fairytale ends? If so why so soon? I mean have you probably reach terminal? Hope not because your hair is gorgeous! Congratulations on your 7 years of hair growth!

Wow! That is awesome! The sped up time lapse in my mind is surreal, yet very real. 7 years is officially no longer associated with bad luck.
Your hair may have actually created a new Mandela effect and altered an entire timeline!

Thanks! To give you a better idea, my hair grows pretty much the average 0.5 inch per month, and I've been trimming a little more these last few years (about 6 inches since 2015).

Yes, I have fairytale ends. I actually prefer them to thick hemlines, so I try not to trim too much (and when I do trim, I try to go for a U, although it's hard to see now). I don't think I'm anywhere near terminal length, but I think I've reached what I can personally handle. I don't want length just for length, I want to like my hair.
Love your hair and your great progress, and thanks for sharing your journey (and photos) with us! :D
Thanks!

Thanks! It's hard to see the growth in day-to-day life, I was actually convinced that my hair had stopped growing back in 2015.
It looks lovely! Thank you for sharing. Love getting to see the time lapse.
Thanks!

Thanks! There was a lot of benign neglect too.
I loved seeing your progress pics! Happy growing to knee, if that's what you decide to try next!
Thanks! Right now, I don't think I want to grow any longer, but if I keep hesitating like that for another year, I might actually get there.

Congratulations! Quite the journey. What do those people that commented on your hair being long back at bsl say now? :p
Most of them have seen it grow in real life, so they haven't said much (although one was very impressed last time I saw him). Otherwise, I haven't really posted pictures that show my length on Facebook since 2014, so other people haven't had much chance to comment. I think the funniest is reading my own comments about how my hair was getting too heavy to wear in buns. But then again, I only knew how to do buns with elastics, and those always hurt me.
Congrats! Dying the ends a fun color is what I did!! If you want to do it, I'd say go for it!
I'm pretty sure I'll do it in 2018. The main thing that makes me hesitate is that we're talking marriage, and I'm wondering if I'd better wait until after it's done, although maybe it would look really cool with a wedding dress, since I know I want to add colour to my outfit or accessories somehow. Of course, we first need to choose a date.
