I saw a thread the other day asking if there were any non-damaging top buns, or something of the sort, and so I started messing around and I think it's pretty secure and gentle, but I did it with hair sticks and it looks a little funny but I think with some experimentation it could become a protective top bun.
Just flip hair over, twist two strands and wrap them in the reverse direction to create a rope braid (took me three tries to do upside down), poke stick through along scalp, wrap braid under and around stick, tuck ends, put a second stick through for extra security, accessorize if desired.
I'm sure someone else has also done this, but I didn't find anything when I searched.
