View Full Version : Where to get a good haircut after years of self-maintenance?

Hi everyone,

First off the bat, it's been such a long time since I wandered these boards! I haven't used this forum in years after settling on a self-maintenance routine for my thick wurly/curly 2C hair, which is currently waistlength.

Right now, though, I feel I need to even up my hemline and do it well. Re-create a good base, so to say. And I don't really know where to go. Picking a random hairdresser seems too much of a gamble, because most places seem at a loss about what to do with my hair (repeatedly getting botched cuts, at different salons, was my first reason to join LHC).

Pitfalls:
- The hair on the left side of my head is generally straighter, closer to 2A, than the back and right side, which are 2C-3A.
- The top part is curlier and coarser than the bottom part.
- My hair naturally tends to form corkscrew curls.

All this owing to the fact I have a very curly-haired mum and a silky 'n straight dad... seemed the genetics I was passed down couldn't decide how to even that out, and I got a mixed bag.

Getting it cut wet (the go-to method for 9 out of 10 salons) results in an asymmetric looking 'do because of this. I've found that in my country (the Netherlands) 'curly' hairdressers generally deal with African hair, which mine isn't (Caucasian/European).

Do you have any suggestions for ways or places I could pay a visit without getting my head chopped up?

Many thanks in advance!

If in USA .............George Michael Madora Longhair Heaven, 422 Madison Avenue, New York.
If in UK .............Long Hair Clinic, 22 Maddox street, London

Both are long hair specialists and will encourage the growth and maintaining of long , healthy hair.

Maybe look for a devacurl salon? I thiiiiink they've got them all over the place (or like, people trained in the "method"). But they tend to specialize in curly and wavy haircuts, which might be useful to you!

I hope you can find a great stylist either way, though!

"Corkscrew curls".......YESSS!!!

I have a hard time associating that with a "pitfall"

...however....*deep breath*....when your hair gets REALLY long, your'e gonna love 'em ;)

I'm in the Netherlands, but thanks!

From looking at your signature picture, it looks just fine to me! Could you manage a self-trim with Feye's self-trimming method?

I think that might be your best bet. Wait until right before a wash, when your wurls have sagged the most, then brush it out well, and do this method (that is what I do with my hair when I trim). It will be awesome, I guarantee it. And you can't mess this up more than a hairdresser would. It's better than coming home with 6 inches cut off in any case!
