View Full Version : December 2017: Rose Bun

This super simple, but looks fancy.

In the video she makes two rope braids and wraps them, but one rope will do. It is basically a rope braid cinnamon bun, but it looks fancy because of the rope braid.

What a beautiful bun in the video! Alas, my thin fine hair resulted in a tiny spaghetti-looking thing about golf ball size. Um ... no.

This is already a style I like, I prefer the one strand way. Maybe I'll wear it today now that I'm thinking of it! :) If my hair is too clean though, I seem to have trouble getting u-pins to stay... Maybe it's my technique?

No, we just add a paranda

That's nice when you can....but at your length you don't even need it...a PUNY bun on you...:hmm: NO!

My hair is too fine and wispy and a shorter length for the landmark(short waist/shrinking spine); it ends up tangled, and only the paranda shows :p

Occasionally I will try a braided bun, then pull it open a bit to use a stick, but it is still pretty tight and not usually comfy.

It worked better with two braids than one-with one it turned into a ball. Didn’t stay long though; kept spitting out the pins.

I can't be bothered to ponytail before rope braiding, and my rope braid always ends up off center, so a side bun it is!

I like it, Mega Moose! I think rope braid makes the bun look extra pretty from all angles.

I did a version of this with a fork today (I don't like to wear lots of pins). I only did one strand today but I'll try two in the future.

This is an old one, but haven't done rose buns since. It's a Triple Rose Bun with a Lego X-wing Starfighter. I added the X-wing as a hair accessory because the swirls made me think of space somehow and the three buns reminded me of Leia. :D

I should try this tomorrow. My overly worrying self, however, feels a bit "guilty" when using ponytails. Like, I feel it counteracts "the purpose" of an updo, which is to protect the hair. I get that it still tangles less and is protected... but still.

PixieP
December 15th, 2017, 05:48 PM
Personally I only do a ponytail as I make the braid(s), then I take out the hair tie and bun my hair.

MidnightMoon
December 16th, 2017, 08:09 AM
Well, here it is.
Overall, I'd wear it again, it feels sturdy, comfortable to wear and of a difficulty appropriate for my lack of talent. I do think I have to practice both rope braiding and pinning the braids so they actually look like petals. I get that one of the biggest problems is my lack of thickness, specially at the ends, but I should find a way to make the center more flat and open. Not sure it looked like an actual rose, so I put a hair toy to skew viewers :p

I'm thinking an option could be to tie the two braids together at a certain point, where taper begins, and make one rope braid, so the petals look bigger in the outside part :hmm:

You would have to wrap up to that point and then combine and finish the braid, otherwise there would be a difference in the amount of length used between each braid which would make for an awkward transition to the part where they merge.

Yes, I was thinking of securing them with one of those tiny elastics, then "unrope" all the hair, and make a new braid. We'll see. I'll also give it a try without the ponytail, I'm not too fond of them, and also tend to tie them too tightly :/

Thank you! Have to remember to do my hair according to the theme when going to see the new movie. Also, it's always a good timing for Star Wars related hair, movie or not.

I think the most rose-like bun is a normal braided bun, where the braid lies flat and is rolled and pinned starting from outside towards the middle (the tassel is hided under the bun's center) and where the "petal-side" of the braid is loosened by pulling. I hope I don't violate this thread's rules by posting another kind of rose bun, but it's really hard to just explain with words.
I did these kind of buns when I had red ends in my hair:

I see. That looks really nice! Specially with the coloured ends it definitely looks like a flower.
Plus, on light hair with colour variations it's much easier to spot the pattern in any updo. With my black hair sometimes things look like a bunch of bumps and nothing else. If you have a video showing how to do this one you posted I'd appreciate it. I'm curious to see if the larger braid starting on the upper left side is braided first, separately, or you have to braid as you go.

I was reading the thread and attempted the rose bun today, it looks nothing like a rose and it was not very secure and it was pulling everywhere, did not like it. But I cannot rope braid for the life of me... maybe that was it. Haartrum's one was stunning though and Iku and Midnight yours are pretty cute!

I'll have to try it both ways. My braided/rose buns need practice because mine also turn into a ball, which looks messy rather than complex (in part because of the twisting). Though, I have trouble starting these things with a high ponytail-- my hair doesn't hold a high ponytail; it sags immediately (if I want to wear a high ponytail, I have to make it by making my hair into a single-loop bun and then pulling the rest through the middle. The bun anchors it). To make a high-bun-from-braid work (like I used to when I was taking a ballet class; a bun made from two braids wound around each other in the fashion of the video was the only thing that would hold up to jumps; I don't even bother to put my hair in a bun for Highland dance unless I absolutely have to), I have to hang my head off the edge of the bed while I braid and bun (so that way the hair is hanging down by gravity in the position I want it). This is literally a pain in the neck...

It might be the angle. Anyway, it does not help with very detailed hairstyles :p
You can never tell much. Or it could be that I am just not very good doing them. But I am very curious to try the vortex bun. I liked Haartrum's one but Torrin' s looks so much more well spread. Thing is Torrin dis rope braids first. Love how it looks so flat :)
